I was thinking, while I was awaiting my turn to give very nearly an armful, that I'd like to start a topic on blood donation.
Do we have any regular donators on GBG? Have you any war stories to tell that would horrify the faint at heart? Any embarassing moments of ill effects afterwards?
I thought I'd start the ball rolling with mine. I've never been in pain or anything, so that's alright, but in the past I have occasionally forgotten to eat properly afterwards - you can see where I'm going with this, can't you? smile
The first embarassing moment was when I felt absolutely rotten about two hours afterwards. In my defence, there was a huge thunderstorm brewing, so it's not like the air was particularly breathable anyway. I went to the front door to get some fresh air and ended up passing out in the flower beds. redface I vaguely remember clunking my head on the doorframe on the way down...
The second (and I hope the last) moment was even worse. I gave blood, felt fine and commenced wandering round town, looking at shops and sucking on many boiled sweets. On the way to the bus-stop I ran out of sweets. By the time the bus was nearly at my village I couldn't see anything xp I hoped I'd make it home, but alas, no. When I got up for my stop I made it as far as the stairs off the bus before passing out redface redface redface Huge embarassment! The bus driver even offered to walk me home and everyone was of course staring at me.
Still, I'm up to what must be my 14th or 15th pinta, so I'm doing alright smile
End of embarassing stories, over to you...

I've tried once to donate..
But I really don't like injections, needles unsettle me. I really did try to hold it together long enough for the blood to fill the bag, but they decided to stop just before there was enough. My vision was going very, very strange.
I've a -proper- horror story though. In a similar vein as blood-donation.Hur hur[/awfulpun] I was being given a pre-TB vaccine injection to test my immunity to the relevant proteins. The problem was that my rolled-up sleeve was too tight and so the needle got an awful lot of back-pressure.
Essentially, my blood pushed out the needle, and the vaccine. Then my vision went all silvery, and then I was sick all over myself and the floor. Subsequently filling three more disposable kidney dishes with the same stuff.
Not fun, terribly embarassing. I was very apologetic.

I like giving blood. Leaking like that is amusing. That said, I've only been a few times. I want the purple card so I had better get a move on.
I'm immune to TB; the tester came up something rotten on my arm.

On the few occasions I've gone, they never want my blood... sad
Probably has something to do with the piercings.

illyrianth On the few occasions I've gone, they never want my blood... sad First time they thought I had a blood parasite and said no (I had to have a test). illyrianth Probably has something to do with the piercings. I'm sure there is only a six month restriction on that (or is that for tattoos...?)

I knew I shouldn't have mentioned that last bit...

Okay, the metaphor is pretty ******** awful but it's the great British fleet and Great British Blood Donations

I feel like a complete loser. I haven't been in ages, though, because I'm not sure if I'm allowed to give blood anymore and I haven't been able to find out.

Still a month until I'm old enough but I think that waiting a bit might be an idea. I'm a bit squimish and though I seem to be very good at not fainting I am good at shaking. I'm trying to get through it, I'm fine with dead things now, and I've worked with blood out of the body, but I think blood donations too much. I have little scars on my hands from where they took too many (uneccessary) blood tests when I was a baby which makes it seem so much worse than it is. I think I'll get an organ donar card though.

O.o That just sounds...so wrong...The mind truly boggles....And to be honest, on the occasions I did go, it was simply because they happened to be in a place I was passing by at the time. Never gone out of my way to look in to donating. That said, they still wouldn't take my blood anyway - various bizarre drug concoctions that the doctors give me would preclude me these days...
