              BYAKUYA saitō
◆ If loneliness is my punishment for the sin of upholding my beliefs, then I will carry it forevermore.

                        ◆ ʏoᴜ ᴀʀᴇ ? ◞ ❞
tab ◞ ғᴜʟʟ ɴᴀᴍᴇ — Byakuya Saitō
tab ◞ ᴀʟɪᴀs — Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, Your Highness, Your Imperial Highness, Priest, Shrine Master
tab ◞ ᴀɢᴇ — Appears to be 20, but is ageless and immortal. Chronologically, he is 1520 years old.
                        tab ◞ ʜᴇɪɢʜᴛ — 5'9" , 174 cm / 6'4" , 193 cm (god)
                        tab ◞ ᴡᴇɪɢʜᴛ — 176 lbs , 80 kg / 222 lbs , 101 kg (god)
tab ◞ ᴘʜʏsɪᴄᴀʟ ᴛʀᴀɪᴛs — Byakuya's physical features change depending on which form he is in. In his human form, his hair is auburn and he has caramel eyes with an average complexion. However, in his sealed heavenly form, he is very much what you would expect as the moon's champion; his hair is white, his eyes are silver, and he has a pale complexion. He also has a true heavenly form which is that of a large white Chinese dragon. Both his heavenly forms can only be used in places that are divine in nature as Byakuya is physically unable to retain his human form in divine areas.
tab ◞ sᴄᴀʀs/ᴛᴀᴛᴛᴏᴏs/ᴍᴀʀᴋs — In his heavenly form, Byakuya has an intricate white crescent on his forehead. It's vaguely visible in his mortal form, but only at night when it faintly glows. Hidden beneath the gauze wrappings on his neck, forearms, and calves appear to be burn scars from chains. On his chest over his heart is the scar from his mortal death and his back, though almost always covered with his robes, is littered with a brutal collection of whip scars.
                        tab ◞ ᴀʟɪɢɴᴍᴇɴᴛ — Good
                        tab ◞ ʀᴀᴄᴇ — Host

                        ◆ ᴡʜᴀᴛ ᴄᴀɴ ʏᴏᴜ ᴅᴏ?◞ ❞
tab ◞ ᴀʙɪʟɪᴛɪᴇs — Taoism This is the ability to use spiritual power to combat beings of the Netherworld. His power is sealed, but Byakuya is still an effective priest. He calls his wish-granting method Daoism. Being a priest comes with the ability to use talismans, spells, and arrays to assist in battle. Unfortunately, Byakuya is limited to only talismans as his spiritual power is sealed.
tab ◞ ᴡᴇᴀᴘᴏɴs ᴀɴᴅ ᴇǫᴜɪᴘᴍᴇɴᴛ— Naginata, Tsukiyomi In its sealed form, Tsukiyomi appears to be a standard naginata with a dark pole, straight blade, and a blunt hook near the guard. Hanging from the guard is an emblem forged from iron in the shape of a lotus with a sun backdrop; the crest of the Saitō family. In its heavenly form, however, it takes on a much more majestic appearance. Tsukiyomi's blade appears to be made of clear crystal and has taken on a significantly curved edge, appearing very much like a crescent moon itself, and the pole is white with silver accents. There is no hook, but the blade is wide and on the blunt side, there is an empty space that appears to have been cut out of it. Instead of his family's crest, a collection of scales and feathers hangs from the guard, and the end of the pole ends in a sharp edge. Depending on which element it is using, the blade glows blue or green.
tab tab Sentience Being a spirit weapon, Tsukiyomi is entirely sentient. It is able to think and feel for itself. It also harbors unyielding loyalty to Byakuya. According to Byakuya, Tsukiyomi is incredibly affectionate and needy for his attention, and also frequently expresses guilt for having been the instrument of his mortal demise.
tab tab Exorcism Being a spiritual tool, Tsukiyomi has the ability to exorcise spirits and demons.
tab tab Energy Detection With just a single drop of blood from someone, Tsukiyomi is able to gauge the strength of their spiritual energy.
tab tab Hydrokinesis One of Tsukiyomi's true form abilities. This allows Byakuya to seamlessly control moisture and water.
tab tab Aerokinesis The sister ability of Tsukiyomi's hydrokinesis. With it, Byakuya can control the flow of air and wind.
tab tab Levitation In its true form, Tsukiyomi is able to levitate. This allows Byakuya to use it as a mode of transportation as well as control it remotely in battle.
tab ◞ sᴛʀᴇɴɢᴛʜ — Byakuya is immortal. While he can be incapacitated, he can't be killed.
tab ◞ ᴡᴇᴀᴋɴᴇssᴇs — Like all gods, Byakuya's power depends entirely on how many prayers are sent to the heavens in his name. While this is what's kept him from falling into an eternal slumber, it is a factor. Of course, the fact that his powers are currently sealed is his main weakness.

◆ ᴛʜɪs ᴏɴᴇ ᴜɴᴅᴇʀsᴛᴀɴᴅs, ʏᴏᴜ ᴀʀᴇ sᴏᴍᴇᴏɴᴇ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ɪs?◞ ❞
tab ◞ ᴘᴇʀsᴏɴᴀʟɪᴛʏ — On his surface, Byakuya is a soft-spoken, humble, and gentle person with a well of infinite compassion. He is just, determinedly so, and strives to do what he believes is right without regret. Byakuya is kind and generous to everyone, but it becomes clear pretty quickly that he has a tendency of favoring the less fortunate or those who the world has abandoned. But, as it goes, the kindest people are often the most damaged and when it comes to Byakuya, that can't be more true. He suffers from fits of melancholy when left alone for any significant length of time. He's lonely, being cut off from the Heavenly Plain and the communication network and living alone in exile, though he is always quick to snap out of and hide these fits. For this reason, Byakuya tends to cling to any companionship he's able to get.
tab ◞ ʟɪᴋᴇs — People, yōkai, yūrei, mononoke, nature, animals, noise, sweets, music, art
tab ◞ ᴅɪsʟɪᴋᴇs — Silence, loneliness
tab ◞ ғᴇᴀʀ — Byakuya isn't afraid of anything really. Seeing as he can't die, he doesn't fear death, and he's already experienced the worst pain imaginable so pain is also something his is indifferent to. If he had to provide at least one fear, it would be trapping himself in one-sided commitments and being miserable because of it.

                          ◆ sᴏ, ᴛʜᴀᴛ ɪs ʏᴏᴜʀ sᴛᴏʀʏ...◞ ❞
Byakuya was born the Crown Prince of a fallen and forgotten kingdom, brought into the world in the dead of night during a full moon that shined its light on him like a heavenly beacon. From the moment he took his first breath, there was never any doubt that he would ascend to godhood. He was born with an exceptional reservoir of spiritual power. While most begin cultivation at the age of ten, Byakuya was almost exclusively raised in the royal temple by the priests and was learning how to cultivate his spiritual energy alongside his princely studies. By the time he made his cultivation vows at thirteen as was custom, he had matched the level of power of his teachers. As spiritual cultivation is a life-long commitment, Byakuya's power only continued to grow from there. Through this devotion to protect the people from evil spirits as well as his infinite kindness for even the lowliest of society, it was no surprise that Byakuya was a beloved royal. Nor was it a surprise that Rì Gòng Tài, the sun god and ruler of the heavenly realm, had come to favor and admire him.

It was also no surprise that his kindness had been the cause of his early ascension.

When Byakuya was seventeen, he protected and showed kindness to Akiko Suga, a prostitute. This act, though relatively minor in comparison to others, was significant to Akiko and ignited an obsession with the gentle and beautiful prince. She pursued him relentlessly, somehow managing to coerce him into letting her travel with him; and Byakuya, being the person he was, was unbothered by this, oblivious to the depths of her affections for him. His retainers warned him against her, but these words fell on deaf ears as he saw nothing wrong with her presence. Akiko was, in fact, intelligent and an excellent conversationalist as well as trained in the entertainment arts; compared to his retainers, who were always reserved around him despite their comradery, he enjoyed her company. It was platonic to him, of course, but his acceptance of her led to unintentionally fueling her fantasies. Fantasies that eventually culminated in a confession on her part and a rejection on his. Heartbroken and enraged, Akiko's retaliation was swift and effective with a clear message: If she could not have the prince's heart, then no one would. That night, as Byakuya and his retainers slept, Akiko plunged his own weapon into his chest.

He was only twenty. Far too young to have met such a fate, but even while the kingdom mourned and raged over his death, they rejoiced that their beloved prince had become a part of the Heavenly Plain. Not only had he become a major deity, taking up the mantle as Rì Gòng Tài's equal as the moon god and Second Emperor, Byakuya was and remains the youngest cultivator to achieve godhood. This, unfortunately, was not the last tragic disruption to his life that he would experience.

For a thousand years, Byakuya lived as Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto. However, he wasn't a god worshipped only by people. Because he didn't look down on anyone, he also heard and answered prayers from spirits and even demons. He had always taken a wish-granting method even in life, preferring to ease the burdens of spirits and demons to help them pass on peacefully rather than forcefully. Being able to answer their prayers was no different. This, however, led to a power imbalance between him and Rì Gòng Tài as a god's strength depends on the amount of worship they receive and eventually, the Heavenly Emperor grew paranoid and jealous. Byakuya was approached with a proposal for marriage that, between gods, would cause their power levels to divide equally among them. Byakuya refused, unable to force himself into a commitment with one he didn't love in such a way, and was immediately punished for it. Byakuya's godhood and spiritual power were sealed before he was cast out of the Heavenly Plain to live in exile.

For five hundred years, he's lived in the mortal realm and has taken many identities. He's experienced almost every walk of life from being an esteemed noble to the lowliest of beggars. Now, he lives as the priest and master of a small shrine in a small village. Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto is all but entirely forgotten in the mortal realm save for the occasional legend of his rise and fall.

◆ ɪs ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ ᴇʟsᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴛᴏ sʜᴀʀᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴛʜɪs ᴏɴᴇ~? ◞ ❞
tab ◞ Theme songs! Autumn Leaf , Upwards to the Moon , Fallen Soul , Wandering , First Glance
tab ◞ If one were to listen closely, they'd be able to hear the faint clinking of chains as Byakuya moves around. He often passes it off as spiritual tools hidden beneath his robes and while this excuse works for common people, those who are more observant or suspicious would likely not fall for it.
tab ◞ Byakuya lives at Kaedoka Shrine, a small shrine that is perpetually in a state of mild disrepair. This is by no means any fault of his own; it is merely Rì Gòng Tài making Byakuya's life difficult in any small and petty way he can. The shrine is dedicated to Fūjin and Suijin.
tab ◞ While Byakuya is beautiful in his mortal form and few people could, or even would, argue that, his beauty as Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto is unrivaled. In his sealed heavenly form, he is considered to be the most beautiful entity to exist in his world. Even now, though his existence is a mere legend, mortals continue to sing praises to this quality. Byakuya is embarrassed by it and tends to shy away from the topic and flattery.
tab ◞ Strictly speaking, Byakuya should be unable to use any spiritual energy. He shouldn't be able to wield or even touch Tsukiyomi either. However, he is still worshipped by the creatures of the Netherworld, so it couldn't be completely sealed. It's weakened, no better than that of a fledgling cultivator's, but it's still there.
tab ◞ Due to his cultivation vows, Byakuya lives as a dedicated vegetarian. He is also forbidden from engaging in worldly indulgences, so Byakuya lives a life of abstinence and chastity. While not unaware of such things, he has no personal experience and if he wishes to hold onto his spiritual power, he has no choice unless his Vow Keeper gives permission. And, Rì Gòng Tài isn't likely to do such a thing anytime soon.
tab ◞ His exile isn't permanent. Should he ever agree to marry Rì Gòng Tài, he would be allowed back into the Heavenly Plain and given back his title and power. However, his reason for his initial refusal remains true. He would be unhappy in a loveless marriage and while he's fully aware Rì Gòng Tài's intent is merely to share his power and wouldn't prevent him from pursuing a genuine relationship with another if he so chose, Byakuya is also too good a man to do such a thing. He would devote himself entirely to his spouse whether he was happy or not.

tab ◞ ᴀʟɪᴀs — Wēn Qiónglín, Ghost General
tab ◞ ᴀɢᴇ — 35, but is forever 20 physically
                          tab ◞ ʜᴇɪɢʜᴛ — 6'0" / 183 cm
                          tab ◞ ᴡᴇɪɢʜᴛ — 160 lbs / 73 kg
tab ◞ ᴘʜʏsɪᴄᴀʟ ᴛʀᴀɪᴛs — When he was alive, his eyes were petrol, but now they're a dull blue with no pupils. He has a deathly complexion and his hair is a dark brown that is often mistaken as black.
tab ◞ sᴄᴀʀs/ᴛᴀᴛᴛᴏᴏs/ᴍᴀʀᴋs — There are black crack-like lines on his face and neck, though they tend to be much more visible when he's angry or fighting. There is a hole in his stomach area where he was impaled when he died and though he's kept it hidden so far, there is a branding scar in the shape of the Lánlíng Jīn peony on the left side of his lower back.
tab ◞ ᴀʟɪɢɴᴍᴇɴᴛ — Good by nature, but is physically Neutral
tab ◞ ʀᴀᴄᴇ — Novel Character, but with traces of the Donghua, Manhua, and Live Action

                          ◆ ᴡʜᴀᴛ ᴄᴀɴ ʏᴏᴜ ᴅᴏ?◞ ❞
tab ◞ ᴀʙɪʟɪᴛɪᴇs — Fierce Corpse As a result of Wèi Wúxiàn's demonic cultivation, Wēn Níng is the first known sentient fierce corpse. His strength far exceeds an ordinary human's, enabling him to lift boulders and break stone. Moreover, his speed and agility far outrank that of an unconscious fierce corpse. He also has incredible regenerative abilities as any injury received after his death heal within with a day's time.
Archery Wēn Níng is an exceptional archer. Wèi Wúxiàn estimates him to be the best archer in all of the Qíshān Wēn Clan and and ranks him among the top four archers he had ever met.
Medicine While not as knowledgeable or skilled as his sister, Wēn Níng displays some knowledge of medicine. He can brew herbs to treat severe injuries.
tab ◞ ᴡᴇᴀᴘᴏɴs ᴀɴᴅ ᴇǫᴜɪᴘᴍᴇɴᴛ— Chains After breaking out of containment by the Lánlíng Jīn Clan, Wēn Níng fights with the chains on his wrists and ankles. They were specifically made to be able to bind him in his uncontrolled state, so they're not only heavier than most chains, they're also incredibly strong.
Bow & Arrow A standard bow and arrow given to him by the juniors. While not his preferred method due to the rigidity of his muscles, he will use it to provide support. Or, just as a last ditch blunt object if needed.
tab ◞ sᴛʀᴇɴɢᴛʜ — Not only can he recover from almost any injury, Wēn Níng is also immune to poison. He is also unbothered by pain and cold environments, and can withstand fires.
tab ◞ ᴡᴇᴀᴋɴᴇssᴇs — While his regenerative ability is impressive, Wēn Níng can't regrow limbs. If he loses an arm or a leg, he will have lost them forever unless they're sown back on so they can eventually heal. He can also be decapitated for a permanent death as once the head is off, he's done for. Furthermore, despite his sentience, Wēn Níng is still a slave to demonic influences; if someone can figure out how to bypass the preventative measures given to him by Wèi Wúxiàn and take control of him, he will be helpless. For that reason, while he is morally good, he is technically a neutral entity.

◆ ᴛʜɪs ᴏɴᴇ ᴜɴᴅᴇʀsᴛᴀɴᴅs, ʏᴏᴜ ᴀʀᴇ sᴏᴍᴇᴏɴᴇ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ɪs?◞ ❞
tab ◞ ᴘᴇʀsᴏɴᴀʟɪᴛʏ — In life, Wēn Níng was shy, nervous, and suffered from a stutter. While he can still be fairly shy, since becoming a fierce corpse, he isn't nearly as nervous as he was and he no longer stutters unless he's flustered. He is the kind of person that will break a promise if it means protecting or defending a friend; especially in a situation that he is particularly angry with. This is shown when he broke his vow to Wèi Wúxiàn to keep the truth behind Jiāng Wanyín's recovered core a secret to not only defend his friend and master, but to knock the sect leader off the pedestal he put himself onto.

Unlike the rest of his natal sect, Wēn Níng has a strong sense of honor, kindness, and loyalty. It not only took a single act of kindness from Wèi Wúxiàn to earn his everlasting gratitude, Wēn Níng does not hesitate to sacrifice himself for others. Even those who have been cruel to him and his friends have been saved by him without a second thought. He didn't hesitate for a moment to protect the cultivators during the Second Siege even though most would've at least considered it. He is especially protective of children as shown when he protected the young Jīn heir (now sect leader) from the corpse of Niè Míngjué or how he will sometimes trail after juniors to provide protection from the shadows.

Wēn Níng is sensitive to a lot of the bloodshed he's carried out since becoming a fierce corpse. He doesn't regret blood spilt in defense of others, but the killings he committed while under the control of others haunt him continuously. He is also highly emotional as shown when he broke down after the corpses of his family dissipated.
tab ◞ ʟɪᴋᴇs — Children, animals, helping people
tab ◞ ᴅɪsʟɪᴋᴇs — There aren't things he really doesn't like, though he couldn't tolerate spicy food when he was alive, but there are a lot of people. Pick a name from the cultivation world and chances are he holds no love for them in his heart.
tab ◞ ғᴇᴀʀ — Seeing as death is something he craves naturally even though he would never outright seek it, Wēn Níng's fears revolve around losing his loved ones. He is especially afraid of losing Wèi Wúxiàn and Lán Sīzhuī as he not only lost them once, they're the only family he has left.

                            ◆ sᴏ, ᴛʜᴀᴛ ɪs ʏᴏᴜʀ sᴛᴏʀʏ...◞ ❞

◆ ɪs ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ ᴇʟsᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴛᴏ sʜᴀʀᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴛʜɪs ᴏɴᴇ~? ◞ ❞
tab ◞ Wēn Níng has been observed to be very good at digging and preparing graves. Morbid as it is, it is thankfully not because he's a corpse; he's just a very considerate person that wants to give the dead as comfortable a resting place as he can offer.
tab ◞ He is unable to cry. He can still be emotional, but his body no longer produces tears. He's also unable to eat and his sense of smell is a little messed up. But, his eyesight is better than ever and he can hear much better than a living human can.
tab ◞ Wēn Níng does smell of death, but not the rotting stench of a corpse. His scent would be described as a fruity sweet smell. The "sweet scent of death" that is often mentioned in literature.
tab ◞ Save for those trained to assist cultivators, animals do have a tendency to either avoid or be nervous around him. Which is a shame because he adores them, but he understands. Still, if he ever met an animal that didn't shy away from his presence (or didn't immediately try to kill him), he would be thrilled.

tab ◞ ᴀʙɪʟɪᴛɪᴇs — Business Seto has proven himself to be one of the most accomplished and formidable businessmen in the world. A child prodigy and polymorphic genius, he excels at virtually any skill or area of study he applies himself to. With natural aptitude and raw talent, he both successfully reinvented KaibaCorp overnight and has ran the multi-million corporation successfully since.
Gaming Seto's passion for games is unmistakable. For years, he held the title of undefeated champion in various games including chess and Duel Monsters. If a challenge ever arose where a gaming master is needed, he is a top candidate.
Tech Savvy Seto is incredibly skilled with science and technology, most notably programming and engineering, despite having no known degrees. He specializes mainly in computer software programming and building cutting edge software and hardware such as KaibaCorp's high-tech Duel Disks and the advanced Solid Vision technology. He even invented sentient artificial intelligence for the sole purpose of recreating Atem for practice duels. He is also an advanced hacker, skillfully making his way through highly secured systems such as the Duelist Kingdom network.
Athletics He is able to nimbly land from high jumps and throw the average 11 year old with little trouble. Seto is also a proficient hand-to-hand combatant, easily overpowering and defeating trained militants with deceptively raw strength.
Marksmanship He doesn't carry any with him, but Seto does own guns. And, he knows how to use them.
Summon: White Dragon This is not an ability he has ever used in any true capacity and he's not even aware he can do it, but he is the master of the White Dragon. He is able to summon it. As the sole Ka inspiration for the game, the White Dragon can appear in any form of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon archetype.
Summon: Obelisk Seto's bond with Obelisk is born of respect rather than the more intimate bond with the White Dragon. He cannot summon Obelisk at will like he can his own Ka, but make no mistake. The ancient god will respond to Seto's very will to survive in the most desperate and impossible of situations. However, because they aren't bonded by soul and spirit, summoning Obelisk exhausts Seto, rendering him incapable of continuing to battle until he's rested.

tab ◞ ᴡᴇᴀᴋɴᴇssᴇs — Pride and an aversion to vulnerability. Those are Seto's truest weaknesses. He has gotten better, but he still struggles to ask for help with anything major. Seto would sooner walk away and die quietly in a dark, filthy alleyway than to ask others for medical assistance. He refuses to let others see him in a vulnerable state, likely due to the trauma of his childhood and how often he had only himself to rely on.

◆ ᴛʜɪs ᴏɴᴇ ᴜɴᴅᴇʀsᴛᴀɴᴅs, ʏᴏᴜ ᴀʀᴇ sᴏᴍᴇᴏɴᴇ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ɪs?◞ ❞
tab ◞ ᴘᴇʀsᴏɴᴀʟɪᴛʏ — Sarcastic, rude, selfish and power-hungry are generally the first impressions people have of him. Seto has a no-nonsense, down-to-earth demeanor and a bad habit of being equally condescending and scathing to just about everyone. Despite his hardened and broken psyche, however, Seto does have one exception to this behavior: his brother, Mokuba. While he can still be quite cold towards the younger Kaiba, he consistently treats his brother with love and care, and despite his selfishness, Seto has always at least tried to prioritize Mokuba and his well-being over everything else. Including himself.

Though Mokuba is Seto's priority, he actually cares deeply for all children. Especially orphans and those that are or have been abused, as he knows through personal experience what both feel like. He becomes incredibly protective of children that are hurt, particularly when witnessing an adult's mistreatment. This showcases a compassionate heart, but sadly it's incredibly difficult for him to get on with his peers. He is a lonely man that does genuinely wish to open up to others, but the betrayals he suffered from those he should've been able to trust during his childhood as well as the systematic emotional, psychological, and physical abuse received from his adopted father has severely damaged his outlook on relationships and life in general. Seto has the overpowering belief that everyone is alone in the world, though there are moments where his able to work through this block. At times, Seto will perform acts of kindness and encouragement and selflessness, but if these attempts to reach out and open up go unnoticed as they often do, he closes right back up.

His pride is both his strength and his weakness. It prevents him from ever wearing the brand of a coward or cheater, allowing him to put 410% into whatever he's working on, but it also gives him a suffocating sense of superiority. While he's certainly improved on his inability to work with a team or asking for help, it is still difficult to earn his respect. His pride in his accomplishments are a prominent part of his very being and he reacts harshly to those that threaten, infringe, or try to delegitimize them. This pride also extends to the Blue-Eyes White Dragon and it's archtype, shown by his utter disgust at the toon version of the legendary beast and his inability to accept the idea of anyone other than himself or Mokuba daring to use them.

Unsurprisingly, Seto's arrogance and ego earns him a lot of contempt and disdain from just about everyone he meets and associates with. However, those that hold onto any hope for Seto tend to not be disappointed. Despite his negative nature, he has high morals and a strong sense of honor. He understands right from wrong and has jumped in to intervene in nefarious acts before. Seto is also a firm believer that hard work and determination is what gets someone ahead in life and entitles them to power and success. Underhanded tactics and seeking "the easy way" are what defines a truly pathetic person in his mind and those that refuse to take responsibility for their wrongdoings aren't worth the ground they stand on. At the very least, people can usually always count on Seto to work towards his ambitions in honest fashion. Unless, of course, his brother is on the line. When Mokuba is in danger, all bets are off and there is nothing he won't do to protect him. No matter how devastating his tactics are to those around him or to himself.

tab ◞ ғᴇᴀʀ — First and foremost, Seto's greatest fear is losing Mokuba. His brother is often the only thing that gets him out of bed in the morning and is, at the center of their success, the sole reason he did everything he did. Losing him would be a blow he would never recover from. That said, he is also terrified of people discovering everything he worked so hard to bury and while he no longer associates loss with death, he still has a deep-seeded fear of failure.

Seto came into the world nineteen years ago on an October night at his parents’ home in Tokyo, and from the moment he was born, it was obvious he was special. His parents could just tell. When it became clear that Seto was more advanced than other children, his parents couldn’t claim to be surprised and were supported of his developments. By the age of four, he was often allowed to sit in on his mother’s classes at the elementary and at five, he was unofficially participating in her lessons.

At six, Seto became an older brother and from the moment he laid eyes on the baby, he adored Mokuba. He always tried to take an active role in Mokuba’s care and from day one, they were nearly inseparable; if not for school and his parents, who often had to coerce him into doing other things, Seto would’ve been happy to never leave his brother’s side. A sentiment he would, sadly, be given a chance to live out. Just shy of Mokuba’s third birthday, their parents were involved in a horrific accident. They were killed instantly and from that moment, the brothers would go on to experience six years of a living Hell before even having the chance to know anything else again.

A Hell that Seto willingly took the brunt of in order to protect Mokuba, but would irreparably destroy who he used to be.

It started just days after his parents’ deaths when he and Mokuba were thrust into the care of their estranged relatives in Domino. From the very start, it was clear to Seto that they wanted nothing to do with their nephews; they lived very frivolous lives with no interest or even knowledge on how to take care of one child, much less two. His aunt only ever provided them with basic needs - clothes, food, a bed - but was otherwise neglectful whereas his uncle was more open with his resentment towards them. He was abusive from the beginning, and Seto’s confident and outspoken self was always an irritant. Soon enough, Seto started acting out intentionally both out of spite and to steer their uncle from hurting Mokuba.

The only thing of value Seto and Mokuba brought them was the inheritance left to them by their parents. An inheritance his aunt and uncle shouldn’t have been able to touch, but were able to squander within months regardless. When the money was gone, so was their value and they had no qualms with abandoning the two at an orphanage in Domino before disappearing to who knew where. This part of their life, much like their time with their aunt and uncle, was relatively short. While Mokuba won’t claim that the orphanage was better, he would say he preferred it over their relatives. But, Mokuba wasn’t exposed to the same level of trauma as Seto was and if Seto has anything to say about it, his brother will never be privy to the details that are hidden from him.

Like most things sinister, it started out innocently. Trust was built and over time, Seto came to see the man that often cleaned his scrapes from his fights with Mokuba’s bullies as a friend. If he could go back and warn himself not to fall for it - tell himself that it was an obvious and cliche trap, he would. He would make himself listen. But, at the time, any warnings he received, he ignored. He never heard the blaring sirens that should’ve gone off when the man grew more and more physically affectionate with him nor did he pick up on the way a few of the other kids tried to warn him; he didn’t want to. It felt nice to have an adult that cared again, but he would regret his stubbornness. Seto was able to get his justice, but that wouldn’t be until after Gozaburo’s death.

The adoption and the following years in Gozaburo’s horrendous care are really no secret. Gozaburo was not a good man by any means and people knew it, even if they chose to pretend he was. Seto spent much of his time isolated and forced into rigorous study; oftentimes, he was worked to exhaustion, but of course, succumbing to it was a punishable offense. He was robbed of all things that could distract him and it was only through his cunning words and actions that he was able to convince Gozaburo he had won, winning him the privilege of some of those distractions back. But, at what point does an act stop being an act and becomes someone’s reality?

Gozaburo, though choosing to take his own life rather than live with the humiliation of having created his own worst enemy, had indeed won. At some point, Seto’s spirit had broken and his heart became a cesspool of hate and despair. He no longer simply pretended games were a means of destroying one’s enemies; he believed it completely. Even his love for Mokuba, though still present enough to not neglect him, had been overshadowed by resentment towards him. Everything he had adapted to in order to trick Gozaburo had smothered the boy he once was and even after Gozaburo’s death - even after he was finally free of his shadow - Seto continued on as the selfish, sadistic child prodigy that would topple one empire and build his own virtually overnight at the tender age of fourteen.

He was so selfish, in fact, that he was more than willing to kill. Which is what he did to acquire the rare Blue-Eyes White Dragon cards in his possession, though he hadn’t needed to dirty his hands with the first two; bankruptcy and the mafia did the work for him. It was the third that he directly killed, but even that was an accident. As the forces of the universe would have it, he wasn’t yet done with the man from the orphanage. It really wasn’t Seto’s fault. What did the man expect to happen by trying to assault him on a roof? But, the act would play a bigger part in following events as it led to the absence of Isono, who took the blame for the murder to spare Seto the shame and humiliation of having to confess what happened, during a time when Seto would need him the most.

After his six month coma resulting from his duel with Atem, when his heart was still incomplete and needed time to heal, Seto left Kaiba Corporation to find the missing pieces of his heart he was forgetting. He left Mokuba, alone and vulnerable, when there was no one there to protect him otherwise. As fate would have it, though, it was Duelist Kingdom that would hold the final piece of his heart. He had retrieved the lost dreams he abandoned in order to survive against Gozaburo and remembered his passion for the games he played. All that was left was to return home to his brother. Of course, Seto’s journey was still far from over. He still had wrongs he needed to right and a blow to his pride he needed to heal, but he has gotten better. He's remembered how to be a human rather than a monster or a machine, though many will still say he could've done better. Seto disagrees.

The reconstruction of his heart didn’t fix him the way some people would’ve preferred. It didn’t erase all the suffering he went through or remove all the lessons he learned. Seto will never be that happy, shining little boy again but he’ll also never be the young man he was after assuming control of Kaiba Corporation. He is who he is now and though he can still heal, he is content with where and who he is now. And, he has vowed to never succumb to suffering again. For himself and, more importantly, for his brother.

tab ◞ Despite what he says, Seto does trust and care about Yugi and his friends, and their opinions of him do matter to him. He just can't stand that they see him as a fix-it project which in turns causes hostility on his end.
tab ◞ Seto is always showing as little skin as he can possibly get away with, especially where his arms and back are concerned. This is to hide the scars from his abuse. The only ones alive that have seen his scars are Mokuba, Isono, and the KaibaCorp on-site doctors; and, out of them, only Mokuba and Isono know where they're from.
tab ◞ He hates collars and collar-like accessories. During the abusive period of his life, he was always forced to wear a collar as a constant reminder of who was in charge.
tab ◞ Seto actually has a strong dislike for adults. Too many have let him and Mokuba down in their life. Seto even hates their own parents as it was their deaths that started them down the path they took, despite the childish logic behind it, but would never admit that to Mokuba. The only adults he truly trusts are Isono and Fuguta, who have more than proven their loyalty to the Kaiba brothers; even then, he isn't all too open about it and still treats them as poorly as he does others. In public, at least.
tab ◞ The sound of a belt strap being smacked together, a whip snapping in the air, or anything similar is a trigger for Seto. He does well with not showing physical discomfort via expressions, but he will often move away quickly from the source of the noise. Also, he doesn't particularly like dark, cramped spaces.
tab ◞ Definitely has magic-related PTSD disguised as an absolute lack of belief it exists. His logic is that "magic" implies elements of fantasy, but "fantasy" is a product of lies and imagination. If something happens, it proves it's no longer magical; it becomes a part of nature.

He doesn't know if this is born from himself or is a result of the Malice she shared with him, but Killer also doesn't care. tab ◞ While Killer was entirely on board with the reality that Lady sought to destroy the world, he also wished to return her humanity to her. An impressively selfless desire considering he's entirely aware that there is a chance she'd be disgusted by him if Grace Garland is a woman with any moral sense.
tab ◞ Killer may be a bad person, but the one thing he would never do is intentionally harm a child. He's not that far gone and he actually doesn't mind being around kids. They're annoying, but there are worse things to be surrounded by. He'd take a gaggle of snot-nosed brats over Gilbert any day at least.
tab ◞ Just because his loyalty is tied wholly to Lady doesn't mean he can't get attached to others. He responds positively (albeit unhealthily) to people who are genuinely kind to him.
tab ◞ Killer does have a name. Of course he does. But, he's not about to tell just anyone what it is. If Lady can't be the first person he tells, he at least wants it to be someone he's a little fond of.
tab ◞ Taken after he and Lady died at the end of the game. Because I already have three previously dead characters; gotta stick to the theme.
