Anakumath's clutch was now several days old. For the past few days, the weyrlings had been set to exclusively bonding with and caring for their dragonets. Now it was time to see where they were in terms of their progress. One of the traditional methods to help strengthen the bond between dragonet and rider was to take the weyrlings through a maze while blindfolded, using only their dragonet's sight to make it through. For today's lesson, Weyrlingmaster Z'von was taking a similar and yet different approach.

"Today, you will be working in pairs. Each of your will have a turn guessing what your partner is holding up, using only your dragon's vision to guide you. You will have to see through their eyes alone. To that end, I will be handing out blindfolds and buckets filled with objects. Some of these objects your dragonets may be familiar with, and some they will not be. The goal will be to get as many guesses correct as possible."

It would undoubtedly take practice, of that Z'von was certain. That was exactly as it should be, for he knew full well that the close bond required to excel at this game would be required during future Threadfalls. Gesturing to his assistants to help him, he began to hand out the blindfolds and buckets, one each to for every assigned group. For now he would let them decide who they were working with, but someone would have to pair up with him or an assistant. They did, after all, have an uneven number of weyrlings. "One of you will have to practice with me, or you will need to work in a set of three."

---

OOC: Using a d10, please roll from the grid below to determine how well your weyrling does in this game! You may choose to RP this in pairs, or simply carry on as though you are playing with a NPC weyrling. If you work together, you will gain an extra +10 pts. The highest score will net you a firelizard! If there's a tie, everyone tied will get a flit. We will also roll from everyone who participated.

Everyone gets to roll 5 times each!

Note: Right now this is the Sins & Virtues kids doing this, but we will also run it again for the NPC clutch.

This will run until next Sunday at 8 PM PST.

  1. Your dragonet doesn't recognize this object, and you can't quite make it out. Clearly you need to spend more time bonding together. -5 pts
  2. This could be a red fruit or a red ball. Your dragonet's vision, while keen, is not quite like your own, and you can't tell which it might be. -2 pts
  3. The other weyrling holds up a playing card - roll a d4 to determine whether or not you're able to make it out. Odds, you succeed and gain +5 pts. Evens, your fail and take -5 pts.
  4. What luck! This is clearly a oiling brush. Your dragonet can recognize this right away. Take +2 pts
  5. This time, your dragonet is able to tell the difference between the red fruit and the ball. +5 pts
  6. While unfamiliar to your dragonet, the shape of a tuber is very easy for you to make out. +3 pts
  7. Based on its shape, this object could be a riding strap or a belt. Roll a d4 to see whether you guess correctly. Evens, you are correct (it is a belt) and gain +3 pts, odds you guess wrong (it is a riding strap) and lose -3 pts.
  8. Your dragon has recognized a sandal. Wonder where they could have seen that before. +2 pts
  9. Although you try very hard to focus, your dragonet's excitement gets in the way and you are not able to tell that this, in fact, is a towel and not a blanket. -3 pts
  10. At first your dragonet cannot quite make out what s/he is seeing, but with your help, s/he recognizes a small pillow. +5 pts

It seemed easy enough to work together with Haveli, as she'd done so many times before. Once properly blindfolded, Yunara settled in, hoping that Ardoxshoth would recognize whatever the other girl held up.

Fortunately, what Haveli held up was nothing other than a tuber. That is a very strange thing, Ardoxshoth commented. "It's... a tuber," Yunara guessed.

"... This one's a little harder," Yunara said, as Ardoxshoth stared hard at the object. It was either a belt, or maybe a riding strap. Judging by where the holes were, though... "A belt?" she asked, turning her head toward where she thought Haveli might be.

HAVELI NOTE 1: Dragons do not seem to recognize tubers, though as a candidate our familiarity with said objects has them absolutely ingrained into our memories. Perhaps introduce them more to mundane objects to advance their knowledge?

I will never mistake a tuber. Haveli thought, remembering all the times sitting down in the kitchens and just peeling away. Even thinking of the tuber made her nose twitch as if she could smell them, dirt and all.

HAVELI NOTE 2: Finer details require a bit more concentration to pick out, especially with things that look very similar at first glance. Spend more time going over basic objects to help create a detailed observation of differences.

"You're correct, it's a belt. Nice catch on the smaller details, to both of you." Haveli confirmed to her partner that she was correct. She was about to give a nod before actually speaking out loud but that probably would have been the worst thing to do, all other options considered.

Ardoxshoth seemed a little put out that the game was harder than expected, but so far... well. A tuber was a tuber, and a belt was a belt. What else was in that bucket? Yunara waited for Haveli to hold up the next item.

What is it? the dragonet asked, as the shape of something small and... well, awkward seeming appeared. Focusing very hard, at last they could make out... Is it a pillow? "I think it is a pillow. Is that right?" Yunara asked Haveli.

V'ek took the bucket without looking inside and held up the blindfold between himself and D'hka as Nimiseth took a seat beside his clutchmate.

"I can hold things up first? How do you feel about that, Lufianth?"

Yes, you and Yours should go! Show us how it's done! That the blue was a little unsure as to what he was meant to be doing had no bearing on his decision in the slightest. Nope. Not at all.

HAVELI NOTE 3: If dragons have basic understanding of shapes they can attempt to connect the dots between new (to them) objects and items they have seen. An example would be understanding what a pillow is and coming to find that it can look many different ways but be the same thing.

Haveli paused in her note writing to actually look at what she was holding and yes, it was a pillow. A small one, probably used to proper a leg or something up, certainly not the kind used on their beds that the dragonets would have seen so far. "It's a decorative pillow, yes. I've never seen one like this before but yeah, it's a pillow." An ugly pillow, for sure. "You two are doing fantastic together."

The bar was set so high Haveli was internally screaming.

Elibrie and Blue Kesucianth
partnered with R'nori and Inannath
Roll 1: Your dragon has recognized a sandal. Wonder where they could have seen that before. +2 pts

Elibrie was feeling strangely nervous about this whole exercise, simple though it was. She and Kesucianth had been working very hard to build their bond, and she knew they'd made fantastic progress, but this...this felt like a test, and she was afraid to fail it. It will be fine, Mine. I know that we can do this.

They'd been set to the task with R'nori and Inannath, and once they were all ready, Elibrie donned the blindfold. It felt...quite odd. But when R'nori held up the first object, it was an easy one to make out, even through her dragon.

"A sandal," she said without hesitation.

I'd like that very much! Lufianth could only appreciate such a kind gesture, happily cuddling next to Nimiseth with eager anticipation. She would do her very best!

D'hka was feeling equally excited to begin as he pulled down his blindfold, giving a nod. "Ready!"

Lufianth tilted her head one way and then the other, staring owlishly at the item in V'ek's hand. Um... She began to hesitate, but did her best to try and share what she was seeing.

"A pillow?" D'hka said after a moment. "Yeah, a pillow. Good job, Lufianth!"

It was a relief that her dragonet could comprehend a pillow that wasn't in her expected 'pillow' shape, and Yunara let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. However, there was the question of what Haveli would pull out of the bucket next.

It's an oiling brush! Ardoxshoth said immediately, before Yunara could really focus on what it was. Sure enough, the shape looked right. "An oiling brush."

R'ul squinted behind the blindfold as if that might help him figure out what Ignaviath was looking at and he prompted the brown to do a bit more investigation rather than simply glancing at it lazily. With a bit more focus Ignaviath was able to convey the message properly, the item becoming clearer and very obvious as to what it was.

"A pillow. Small one," he added, wanting to be precise.

Lufianth knew what this item was, and didn't take nearly as long to her to recognize what the young man was holding. Oh! A sandal! Do you think Ardoxshoth would like it?

"A sandal!" D'hka agreed. But... as for Ardoxshoth liking it--maybe it was better not to let her know about it for now...

A brush! For oil! Lufianth said with excitement. She loved those brushes! They always felt so nice against her hide, and her D'hka found all the itchy spots! She hadn't even needed to really focus on the item much at all.

D'hka was surprised by how quickly his dragon recognized the object, but could only laugh. "Yeah, definitely an oiling brush." Lufianth did love bath time.

After the sandal, Elibrie had dared to think that maybe this wasn't so bad after all, but Kesucianth didn't recognize the object that R'nori held up, and no matter the amount of concentrating or mental squinting Elibrie did, she couldn't make it out.

"I have no idea," she admitted, crestfallen.
