Maybe it was the sudden responsibility getting to Fe'ral. Maybe it was the fact that this was the first time they were facing off against Thread. But he was terrified. What was he thinking? Could he really be brave enough to be a real rider?

Oh my Fe'ral... of course you're brave enough. This is just fear. They hadn't given up, after all. The brown gave a croon of encouragement, trying to help his rider calm down.

Day 1
1. 4. You're suddenly having a moment of panic. This is real. This is too real. You are now face-to-face with the deadly menace that has killed so many. The silver strands wind and twist and reach out for you, and you suddenly find yourself filled with doubt and worry. Can you do this? Why are you up here? What about all those that failed? How can you do this for the rest of your life -- a life that could well be cut short!?! Thankfully, while you are having a moments panic, your dragon seems to know what to do--especially when the lurch to the side and dive to flame down a few patches of Thread. While this doesn't really calm you, and you're still sweating bullets beneath that helmet, you do begin to focus more on sweeping up the Thread. [If your roll this five times or more throughout the course of the game, your Panic will get the best of you and you will panic yourself as you jump Between. You may choose to 1. die and be lost forever 2. appear from Between way off course and take Major Damage -12 HP by jumping right in a nasty clump that you weren't even supposed to be near or 3. appear from Between way off course right in your fellows airspace. Quote a weyrling and give them Major Damage -12 HP for flaming them or startling them into a patch. You in trouble now. Encouragement has no effect on this outcome or counter though you can be saved from damage.]

Thankfully, the next challenge was easy enough. Tossing firestone was something Fe'ral knew how to do. With relative ease, he passed a bag of firestone to a rider in need.

It was fortunate indeed that Zadelraheth was a larger brown, for the wind could not blow him off course. The dragonet gave a bugle, wheeling in the sky defiantly.

If you’re a white or green whose adult size is smaller than 24’, you’ll find yourself struggling. You are blown right into a clump of thread. Damage: -5 HP.

If you’re a green whose adult size is 24’ or larger, blue, or brown 33’ or under, you do find yourself struggling through the stronger gusts but are able to fight it. Unfortunately, as you fight against the wind, you either find Thread blowing right into you or strain your muscles against the fight. You’re able to evade most of the damage, but it’s still a struggle. Damage: -3 HP.

If you’re a brown whose adult size is 34’ or larger or a bronze, you’ll fight against the wind but your strength and stamina allow you to pull through. D'rok studied the air around them, trying to follow each command as it was given logically and not just passing it on blindly. Someday we'll make calls such as these and we will know why, D'rok mostly thought to himself, though nothing he ever thought was actually secret from Khazariath. The bronze rumbled underneath him as he flamed another clump of Thread, taking a momentary boon of support from one of his brothers.

Stay strong, Destrieth, and thank your rider for the kind words.

The longer they flew the more Fi'dal realized Arwainth was in her element here as he was on the ground with a surgery to perform. She was small enough to wheel and dive as needed but her energy levels were high enough that she could fight against the wind and continue to flame Thread from the sky. He couldn't help the pride welling up within him as she flew and when a call for firestone came down from above, they rose to the challenge.

Arwainth brought them astride the massive bronze Bajeth who sent a warm welcome to the little green. S'ian made eye contact with Fi'dal who heaved the sack of firestone up and over, the pass flawless. It drew a nod of thanks and a little grin from S'ian which made Fi'dal feel less of a failure as he and Arwainth dropped back down to their assigned level.

Quote:
18. You're doing great and feeling good! Though you wind up with a few small ashburns, and you're still feeling a little anxious, nothing has gone horribly wrong. When Thread gets close, you make your move and flame it away. When you're tapped to deliver firestone, you do so with no trouble. This isn't so bad... Not at all! You're feeling good, and that's what matters. You and your dragon surely are naturals, baby! Good job! You're certain the Weyrlingmaster's have noticed your natural skill. Gain +1 XP

Aside from a few superficial ashburns to both dragon and rider, Fi'dal and Arwainth were doing well. Fi'dal's anxiety had tampered down to something managable, a level that would be helpful rather than hindering. His head was on a swivel as Arwainth continued to do her job, flaming down Thread left and right between runs to bring firestone up to the other riders in the wings above. While he wouldn't say he felt confident in the saddle yet, Fi'dal knew that practice made perfect. They had a ways to go but things were looking good so far.

Just as he was starting to feel confident enough to make it through the rest of their rotation, another call for firestone sent Fi'dal and Arwainth up to the wing above them. This time Fi'dal's toss was off and the sack fell down to the ground far below, hopefully not taking anyone with it as it went. Grimacing as his side twinged from the earlier pulled muscle, Fi'dal tried again with a spare bag and thankfully hit his mark this time. That's what he got for feeling confident, he supposed.

5. Your adrenaline is pumping and you feel fit to fight! Whatever fears or worries you have, you’re absolutely ready to take the world by storm. Your dragon wheels and dives, and you wind up successfully flaming some strands. Of course, you also find yourself suddenly dangling in some mighty precarious positions as your dragon avoids getting smacked by a tangle of Thread. The straps you so valiantly worked on are the only thing keeping you from plummeting to your death. Let’s hope Thread doesn’t latch onto those thick leathers… and if they do, that your backup security straps work! Thankfully, as the fight continues, you focus on what’s important--flaming down Thread. If white, green, or blue, you wind up saving one of your wingmates thanks to your impressive quick wingwork! Damage Save Quote a wingmate and save them from the damage they would take.

Getting ready for Threadfall was less...anxiety-filled than Brenva had thought it would be. Both she and Skalmath had studied, been dutiful in their training, made sure they were ready for this day to come, and by Faranth, they'd both make sure they were exemplary. After all, Skalmath was daughter to some seriously impressive stock, and she wanted nothing more than to prove that she was a warrior at heart. Brenva could easily echo her Green's sentiment. They had little to actually prove to anyone. They'd shown in their days that they were ready for this duty. They'd worked together, trusted one another. She took her time, before the first Flight was called to the skies, strapping her straps tight, making sure everything was ready, before sliding on to her Green's back and taking off.

The pair were clearly prepared once in the air, staying in formation while wheeling and diving with absolute precision. Clumps of thread fell to Skalmath's flame, and while Brenva herself might've been tumbled in some rather terrifying positions every now and then, she still was sure in her knowledge that they were ready for anything. Even Thread. Enough so that when her burly little green noticed that one of their Wingmates was in trouble, they managed to catch it, dodging and flaming it down sharply, "LOOK OUT!"

You're suddenly having a moment of panic. This is real. This is too real. You are now face-to-face with the deadly menace that has killed so many. Brenva's confidence was short lived, despite their earlier success. As the greenrider pair darted around, the woman could see others. Thread was falling, people got hurt and died doing this. In this moment, it almost felt like she was in a brawl in the middle of Nabol all over again. A clump of thread was falling right for them. She could see the tendrils twisting and waving right for her face, and in that moment? She could do nothing but have a moment of RAW terror. A realization that in this moment, she might well be coming face to face with her own death, and she'd nothing to show for it. No Weyrmate, no real friends, only her Green, who shared her hearts, her soul, her mind. They were one, and for just a moment, she worried that maybe she was infecting Skalmath with her terror.

Instead, she was proven wrong.

That stout, stalwart body rolled, flame belching from her maw to sear the thread straight from the sky with no hesitation at all. No fear. She could feel it in her Dragon. Skalmath was not afraid, in fact, after that moment? She turned her head to gently look at her rider with red-violet eyes. Reassurance washed over Brenva like a wave, making her feel like it would all be fine. Even though she wasn't entirely calm, and she was still shaking from that minor panic, her hands tightened on her straps and she leaned in to her Dragon. Time to keep going. No time to fall behind.

The Green and her Rider realized that it was time to go on the Firestone run. It was comforting, honestly, after the panic of a moment ago, to turn and head to grab that heavy bag.
