12-14. Firestone run! A weyrlings primary purpose, after all. Roll 1 D100. Evens are successful tosses that make their mark. Odds are botched tosses. It is assumed you make a successful throw afterwards but your pride is wounded. Additional flavor text is as as follows:

It was time to venture up a little higher - Regiloth calls for firestone, Khazariath informed his rider and D'rok nodded to him. Where is he? he asked, allowing Khazariath a moment to confirm before he pushed them both between into the middle wings. If he'd thought the lower wings were busy, it was nothing like this. Which was why they started low, but it took a moment for D'rok to screw his head on right to make the toss.

And he missed.

He missed. D'rok's shoulders tightened with embarrassment as he made the next toss - and Regiloth's rider still gave them a thumbs up for the delivery.

It gets easier the brown assured them, Now it is best you get back to safety.

They didn't need to be told twice. D'rok had a Weyrling Wing to at least try and play Wingsecond with. But he'd do alright at that, surely.

Round 1
Day 1: 1/3

This was what all the training, all the lessons and drills had been leading up to. T'roi was nearly as exicted as Destrieth was to finally fight Thread -- real Thread, during a real Threadfall, not just painted rope. The young dragonrider thought about all the history he'd learned, both in class and studying on his own, and knew he was carrying on a living tradition that had lasted for thousands of years at High Reaches. He drew himself up a bit proudly ss Z'von looked the bronze and brownriders over; he knew he was up for the challenge.

Destrieth knew too, and the big bronze weyrling stood more proudly too. This is what we were born for, Mine. This is our legacy!

Then Weyrlingmaster Assistant mounted up, and T'roi did the same, settling into his straps and ensuring that they were fastened nice and tightly. They were ready for Thread!

Quote:
17. You're blooded almost immediately by a large tangle of Thread. You suppose that's why it's called a First Blooding, after all.

No sooner had T'roi and Destrieth popped out of Between to the location of the Threadfall than they found themselves in a tangle of the silvery menace. Caught by surprise, Destrieth pulled up, but not before taking a score to his foreleg. He bellowed and instinctively went Between to freeze it.

T'roi thumped his bronze on the neck when they reemerged, sending proud reassuring thoughts to him. The upper levels shouldn't be letting so much Thread through!

4. You're suddenly having a moment of panic. This is real. This is too real. You are now face-to-face with the deadly menace that has killed so many. The silver strands wind and twist and reach out for you, and you suddenly find yourself filled with doubt and worry. Can you do this? Why are you up here? What about all those that failed? How can you do this for the rest of your life -- a life that could well be cut short!?! Thankfully, while you are having a moments panic, your dragon seems to know what to do--especially when the lurch to the side and dive to flame down a few patches of Thread. While this doesn't really calm you, and you're still sweating bullets beneath that helmet, you do begin to focus more on sweeping up the Thread.

This was where he needed to be. This was what he needed to be doing. This--
Wait. The sound of a dragon's scream from somewhere up above wrenched his attention elsewhere, and Ka'ia could feel his heart sieze into his throat. What was he doing up here? When had he ever been the type to be--to be self-sacrificing, to--to make a difference in something like this? Was he even worth the leathers he clung to so tightly, hoping beyond hope not to wind up nothing more than another line in the records, a corpse never sent home?
Oh, Faranth. Oh no. He'd die up here, lost to anyone and everyone, a waste of everyone's time, and possibly even worse--the cause of someone else's misfortune, just like he'd always been.

Ka'ia.
Argamath's voice jarred him out of his thoughts, although his anxiety had already begun to spiral into oblivion. The Bronze waited for a clear moment to look over his shoulder at his rider, giving a soft rumble of understanding--he was scared, too, but he didn't have the added uncertainty that came with choosing to be a rider. He had been born for this, generation after generation carefully cultivated to produce one of High Reaches' proudest dragons. Ka'ia, however, was still just a boy from Nabol, all too used to suffering.
Dear heart. Take a moment to breathe. Were it anyone else, Argamath may not have been quite so gentle. We've not been struck yet, have we?
Well-- Well, no, but--
Then do not act as though all is lost. There's no malice to his voice, nor derision. Even for all his confidence, Argamath still knew full well that this could turn lethal, and the last thing he wanted was to scold his rider for a fear he himself understood. This is our first Fall. We won't be perfect, but we cannot be so easily ruined.
...you're right, of course. Not that he needed to tell Argamath of all dragons that, but it still needed to be said. I'm sorry, I just...
I understand. He sent a wave of comfort through their bond, turning back to the fight at hand. We may be afraid, but that will not rule us.

Round 1
Day 1: 2/3

Quote:
Your adrenaline is pumping and you feel fit to fight! Whatever fears or worries you have, you’re absolutely ready to take the world by storm. Your dragon wheels and dives, and you wind up successfully flaming some strands. Of course, you also find yourself suddenly dangling in some mighty precarious positions as your dragon avoids getting smacked by a tangle of Thread. The straps you so valiantly worked on are the only thing keeping you from plummeting to your death. Let’s hope Thread doesn’t latch onto those thick leathers… and if they do, that your backup security straps work! Thankfully, as the fight continues, you focus on what’s important--flaming down Thread.

T'roi could feel himself getting pumped up as he and Destrieth soared and wheeled through the sky, looking for pockets of Thread to flame and charring them with east. He had never felt so exhilarated!

A sudden large tangle of Thread caused the bronze to veer sharply, and T'roi hung on for dear life, thanking Faranth that his straps were sturdy and tight and in excellent condition. He made a mental note, though, to thoroughly inspect them after this was over, even more thoroughly than was required.

The pair resumed soaring and wheeling and scanning the skies for Thread. T'roi allowed the feeling of pride to wash over him again; this was truly their destiny.

Still stressed about his initial firestone run, it was with great angst that Ch'el was told to deliver another sack to none other than the Weyrleader! His hands were shaking by the time Vardoth made it over to where Thistreth was belching flame.

Once again, Vardoth sent him nothing but confidence.

By the time he threw the stone, he almost closed his eyes as soon as the stone was out of his hands--but Vardoth hummed triumph. With a nod of thanks, Ch'el hardly had time to register the change. He... He did it!

Like I always knew you could.

You do great and are feeling great. A large clump of Thread that heads your way but you flame it down successfully. Trumpeting loudly, you decide to share your triumph with your fellow wingmates. Encouragement Boon: Say something encouraging to one of your wingmates, and make them feel a bit better! Gain +1 XP point

Destrieth looped through the air to flame a large clump of Thread that was swirling menacingly toward them. With a mighty roar, he charred the silver threads into ash. We are doing great! he trumpeted proudly. T'roi let out a triumphant whoop too; it was if he could feel the eyes of those that had come before him at High Reaches watching him with approval.

He saw D'rok and his bronze fllying nearby and hailed him with a grin. "You're doing great!" he shouted, waving encouragingly at his fellow bronzerider. Destrieth wheeled off to chase another patch of Thread before he could say anything else or get a reply, but it didn't matter -- he had to share his excitement with someone!

Once again, Ch'el was given the order to run Firestone to yet another rider. While the young man didn't mind--this was their job, afterall--he had thought there might be more flaming and fighting. Some of his wingmates were wheeling and diving and making spectacular saves....

Him?

He was making runs with Vardoth, throwing stone, and hoping he didn't screw up as badly as he did his first toss.

We'll be fine, Mine. You're becoming quite well practiced, after all. Vardoth sent His nothing but support, more than happy to carry him up and into the higher and more dangerous fighting Wings. This was their duty, and he couldn't be more proud.

Thankfully, this time he managed to toss some firestone to a green rider, and ever sucessfully. Maybe Vardoth was right. Maybe they were starting to get the hang of it.

Thankfully, throughout, you do manage to see some thread coming right at a fellow weyrling. You call out to them and save the day! My oh my, how impressive you are! Save Quote a wingmate and nullify any damage they're to take!

The surprise of nearly getting another Weyrling hurt did a little to get their head back in the game. Mikkeluth felt like he was doing great as he dove after another bit of thread and burned it to dust. He got a little bit of ash damage after getting too close to the flame and ash of thread. Not enough for either to be too worried about it.

16. Things start off slow, but you manage to catch a few strands of Thread. For the most part, you realize that things seem to be a mix of quiet followed by moments of stress. You catch a solid tangle, but another few strands fall through. You find it's tricky when there are entire groups falling overhead together, and you find yourself struggling to make the right choice on what to catch. In one instance, you almost singe a wingmate by forgetting your airspace. Rookie mistake!

Ar'twa was finding the whole 'wait and flurry of movement' regime to be hard to concentrate through. In the times of low activity his mind begins to wander. He found himself not always sure what to do. Mikkeluth wasn't doing much better and was distracted in his own way. Among the bad calls made was one that resulted in almost causing one of the wingmates to be singed. Ar'twa cringed knowing that he was not doing great. But it was his first time, he told himself. He would get better.

Fi'dal stood at attention as the Weyrlingmaster and his assistant gave the group their final pep talk, his palms sweaty even as he held rank and file. This was it. This had been his dream for a few short Turns, but when he'd failed to Impress, he'd gone back to the life he'd know before. Now he had a few Turns as a healer under his belt and although he'd been content with that life, Arwainth had showed up to bring him back into the world of fighting Thread and protecting Pern. All their training led up to this, and Fi'dal wasn't sure he was ready.

Thankfully Arwainth had other ideas.

We can do this, she said confidently, her enthusiasm and energy infections despite Fi'dal's worries. She was so young and optimistic - almost too much at times - and he knew that the world didn't favor the bold and the young. He'd seen too much in his short time as a healer to know that. But he gave Arwainth a wobbly smile before he mounted up, securing himself into the saddle just ahead of Arwainth's beautiful wings. This was it. They could die today. His beautiful dragon could return with scars and burns, could lose limbs and eyes, be grounded-

His thoughts jolted out of his head as Arwainth took matters into her own claws and took to the skies, making Fi'dal focus long enough to jump Between and to their target location. The instant they did Fi'dal froze, seeing Thread at eye level for the first time. Any and all direction was chased from his head, but Arwainth was there yet again to take over while Fi'dal tried to get a grip on himself. His green's confidence and precision did help him settle his nerves a bit and he tightened his hold on the straps, leaning into Arwainth's neck to try to focus.

A rather large clump of Thread fell too close for comfort by Arwainth's shoulder, but she was able to roll away from the danger without a flinch. Fi'dal, on the other hand, felt his anxiety and worry spike once more. Perhaps they should land. Maybe there'd be more work for him elsewhere in the Weyr today. He could fall back on his healing skills, help out on the ground, maybe-

Fi'dal, my dearest. Trust me. We can do this, Arwainth said, cutting through his thoughts once more. Fi'dal felt terrible that he didn't trust her enough - no, didn't trust himself enough - to see them through their Blooding, but he couldn't bring them back to the ground. Arwainth was born for this and he wouldn't deny her her life's calling due to his own fear.

Quote:
20. It's a bit of a mixed bag here. To start, your dragon bit his or her tongue while you were feeding them stone and now there's just a constant residual ache in both your mouths. While you've managed to spit flame at the Enemy and char it into dust, you clearly need to work on your firestone toss because you wrenched an arm muscle during your last throw. Ow. To make matters worse, you wound up missing a formation change, and almost had a mid-air collision with a fellow weyrling.

While they continued to fly Fi'dal's anxiety lessened, but their luck was rather terrible. Arwainth bit her tongue while chewing firestone and while the pain was unfortunate, they did manage to flame down quite a bit of Thread. Fi'dal knew he'd pulled something on an errant toss of firestone and they were both too distracted by the pain to notice a formation change, leading to a near collision with one of Arwainth's siblings. Fi'dal lifted a hand in apology and let out a slow breath to steady himself. They could do this. He could do this for Arwainth. The life of healing was behind him now, he had to focus as much as he had on that so he could live up to the expecations he'd given himself now that he was a dragon rider.
