Even so, humans struggle to live, wretchedly. And that I think - is something very beautiful.

NPCS to add
Jam, amateur musician and the latest in a long line of master instrument crafters. The Kiritani have been customers for generations. Has a style similar to Marnie's from Pokemon, punk but classy at the same time. Energetic, outgoing, and cute. Older than Kagerou by a couple years.

Jim, her older brother by five or so years who joined the ninja ranks because he has a bloodline. Classy, adventurous, and accustomed to being an older brother. There used to be an ongoing joke between Jam and Kagerou where Jam would ask Kagerou to watch out for her older brother despite Jim having been a ninja for longer. Jim is dead.

Timeline

PRE-SR (Kagerou age 17)
    Year 1:
    • Extra Chapter: Kumotake - Kumotake commits suicide.
    • Extra Chapter: Nozomi - Kagerou actively participates in the UHV war alongside Nozomi. During a mission gone wrong, Nozomi almost dies. In her death throes, the kikaichu flee her body, weakening her greatly and purging her of her Aburame bloodline limit.
    Year 2:
    • Inka, rather than seeing the blood his people, his family, spilt, cedes to the Water Daimyo's orders to pass over control of Kirigakure and its Sero. Kirigakure disbands and, led shortly by Inka, seeks refuge in Arashigakure.
    • Kiritani Kyoka and Uchiha Suigetsu both go missing, one after the other.
    • Due to being a target of internal clan conflincts, largely centered on her credibility as a Kiritani with her bloodline and lack of high-lethality missions, Kagerou is ordered to travel and learn for her safety.
    Year 3:
    • The first Halloween after the water Daimyo takes over Kirigakure, the Sero acts up. Containment fails. The village falls to the Sero and is unable to be accessed from the outside.
    • While running missions for his clan, assisting those who desired to neither live under the daimyo's or Arashikage's rule in forging a new life outside of village protection, Kiritani Suigetsu meets Rei Yuukata and his mother.
    Year 4:
    • During Halloween, the first concentrated effort to enter the Sero since the early months is made. Large numbers of troops from the water daimyo and many ex-Kiri nin went in to retake and salvage what had been lost. Kagerou volunteered, of course. The end result was a massacre. None of those stranded inside from the previous year had survived, and large numbers of the new bodies that entered also never made it out, many dying inside while others were never able to get out.
    • Kagerou is assigned to Arashigakure by her grandparents to assist the ex-Kiri integrate into the village.
    Year 5:
    • The second Halloween since what was once Kirigakure was overrun by the Sero. Having learned from the last time, smaller parties are sent in. Further confirmation is received that those who remain do not survive. Casualties remain high, but it's noted for the future that small numbers of elite will be the only ones to deal with the Sero.
    • Jim dies in the Sero.

POST-KOGARASHI
    Year 1:
    • Winter winds in the Forest - Sonyo, interred in Arashigakure's hospital by Kagerou after collapsing on the field, awakens to find Lohner. During their conversation, the nature chakra inside Lohner begins to petrify him in an unprecedented way, turning him into a tree. Kagerou drops her work healing the injured soldiers on all sides of the Kogarashi War to rush to the scene.
    • Extra Chapter: Nagisa - Kagerou meets Nagisa, while assisting with the rebuilding and, in her case specifically, healing to be done after the war. She simply accepts Nagisa as her student.
    • ??? - As a personal thank you for Neo-Konoha's assistance in defending Arashigakure, Kagerou performs an implant for the hokage, Lahlill, while she is at Leaf to check-up on the veterans of the Kogarashi War that require long term care.
    • Ika Interviews - Toso picks his new advisers. Kagerou comes with popcorn.
    • Medical Magnum Opus - The village has just recovered from the war, relief efforts have completed, and the new leadership has been established, but before Kagerou has any chance to catch her breath, the Arashikage approaches her with a project she cannot refuse. Her research on the miracle regenerative serum begins.
    • Tismore Atoll - A kage summit is held and then promptly interrupted by terrorists.
    Year 2
    • Tea with the Empress at 2PM - Kagerou arranges an appointment with Unki to speak on some matters, specifically the rumors of her miscarriage. Her motive is the buy Akito's and Peroperosuke's freedom from Nikkyo Pharmaceuticals, but by no means does she want anything less than an open conversation with the empress.
    Year 3
    • Spring - The Cursed Seal Unleased - Nagisa chooses the path of power through the cursed seal. Kagerou bears witness to and assists her dear student with the procedure.
    • Fall - Sero Chapter: Kagami - During the annual Sero Halloween, Kagerou learns that Kagami is still alive.
    • Winter - This thread.
    Year 4
    • Early Spring - This thread.
    • Late Spring - Tea & Calligraphy - Kagerou apologizes for her extended absence the past few months. She also seeks permission to join the Oinin's lower ranks, a befuddling proposal.
    • Early Summer - A Song of Fire and Ice - Sonyo begs Kagerou to perform a dangerou implantation with a compromised sample. Kagerou unwillingly agrees and, after a series of traumatic events, succeeds.
    • Late Summer - Extra Chapter: Soraru - The string of befuddling choices continues, this time involving seeking tutelage under a samurai of some note, Soraru Hiraiite. Her choice attract ever more eyes from her clan as they try to decipher her reason for connecting with the young heir. The attention is exactly what she's hoping to get.
    • Fall - Sero Chapter: Severin - Venturing into the Sero once more, Kagerou learns that Severin isn't dead, she almost loses her cousin, and...
    Year 5
    • ???

Kyoka - Forgot the count : Suigetsu - Zero and happy
[Kiritani Training Fields - Age 0]

"Kyooooookaaaa," a deep greeting cry rang across the misty training fields, the emptiness and quiet of breaking dawn only magnifying the sound. The greeter in question stood large, with his arms spread up and waving around in frantic happiness. His hair was a shocking green in the faded blue morning air and his eyes were an even more dramatic scarlet. With a fluorish of a spin, the greeter pointed to himself and his neighbor, "Suigeeeeeeetssssssu." He broke down laughing at his own pun.

His own pun he'd said countless times before as the other he had labeled as Suigetsu blinked blankly. He stood, closed into himself, legs together and arms crossed over his chest. With his silky black hair and long eyelashes, it was hard to believe he was a man, but his face was most certainly that of a handsome male specimens. He wore simple training clothes, unbothered by chilly fall air that rustled the short sleeves of his thin gi. A mouse sat on his shoulder, nibbling at a breakfast cracker, and the nose of another could be seen just barely poking out of his sleeve. Unlike his overly excited companion, who was bruised, battered, and wearing torn clothing, he looked absolutely untouched, save for a scratch on the back of his hand from the one attack that had gotten through.

The woman named Kyoka was an absolute beauty, and the striking family resemblance between her and her beautiful brother could be seen immediately. Her hair fell down to her waist like a curtain of moonless night and her eyes shared the same hue. The best of her rosy lips and soft cheeks were brought out with the faintest touches of makeup. The long-sleeved furisode she had come dressed in were the perfect complement to her graceful appeal. When she walked into her husband's waiting embrace and gave him an affectionate peck on the cheek, they were a truly mismatched couple. His vibrant greens and reds clashed with the muted colors of her kimono while simultaneously being drowned by her abyss-like blacks. "Huhu, you do remember why I'm here, right?" the fairy-like woman asked as she pulled away.

She was pulled back in before she could completely leave, and her chaste kiss on the cheeks was reciprocated with a rather more involved kiss between two mouths. Breathily, Suigetsu joked right after breaking the kiss, "I have another stomach for sweets~". His playful tone was a complete mismatch for the maturity prior. Indeed, even now, with the green-haired jounin holding his wife by the waist with one hand and holding her forehead to his with the other, the maturity could very well continue to escalate.

The other Suigetsu remained as the quiet third wheel, saying nothing about the glimmers he saw snaking through the air.

Kyoka's hand moved up as she pressed herself even closer. Her lips hovering tantalizingly right below her partners and his vision filled with only the image of her, she whispered, "Then, perhaps, you are fine with this as my win?". The fingers curled and the wires placed secretly tightly all across her opponent's body. The surprisingly well built form of the scholar was bound and weeping small drops of blood as razor sharp wires dug into his skin. Gently, teasingly, his arms were coaxed into opening up around Kyoka with the threat of pain, permitting their mistress to step back and point the opening of her furisode at her husband, till death do them apart. Within the shadows of the sleeve, a many-legged something could be seen at the ready.

Before any of the adults could answer, however, from within the fold of Kyoka's other arm, a whimper followed by a wail sounded out. Little fists pushed aside the blankets to reveal the tiny, green haired baby swaddled within the layers of cloths. Having been so rudely awakened by the scent of blood wafting through the air, she rightfully screamed at the tops of her lungs, "Waaaaaaagh."

"Kagerou!" with no concern for his personal safety, or thought for anything but his sweet baby crying, Suigetsu tried to move to comfort his child. The wires, in that microsecond before they could be adjusted by Kyoka, sliced further into the oinin's skin, and would have sliced him even further when he slipped on the dew-ridden grass if his wife hadn't been so perfect.

With one hand, she both patted Kagerou comfortingly and manipulated her strings so that they would carefully hold aloft her husband as he tripped and, held up by the strings, spun in a full circle before finally reaching stability floating midair on his back like some helpless, red-eyed turtle. Soothingly, the mother's soft voice cooed, "There, there. It's okay. It's okay." Though, no matter what she did, she could not get Kagerou to quiet down.

Suigetsu, the one not hanging by the thread of his wife, approached his sister and concisely offered, "Here, let me," with both arms held out to accept the child from his sister. The mice on his body, those visible now numbering three as a third peeked out from behind his collar, sniffed over in anticipation. "I'm not wearing anything scented," he assured.

Though she initially clasped her baby close to her chest, Kagerou's mother knew her brother would be better than her, so as if she had no problem with it at all, she nodded and handed her child with a smile.

The father was a little more vocal there, shouting, "Hey! No funny business, okay?!" as his lazy spinning brought him facing the pair of siblings once again.

Once in his hands, Kagerou quickly calmed down, her bawls changing to little coos as she played with the mice that came down to greet their master's niece.

"I could do that, too!" the still spinning Suigetsu said as his face came right side up again, "If I just wasn't…" The rest of his words faded into grumbles and mumbles until he was unraveled from his string prison.

"Clean up, dear," Kyoka ordered as she spun her strings back to her neatly, "Get those wounds healed, and then we shall fight as agreed."

Sighing, Suigetsu picked himself up, black tomoe floating into existence in the one eye he had opened. "Yes, yes, darling," he relented and turned around, ready to leave.

Right then, though, Kyoka added one more thing. "And also," Kyoka smacked her lips thoughtfully, "is that nightshade you wore on your lips? It's sweet. You should wear it more often."

Her younger brother, who had walked away from the couple at this point to get away from the smell of blood, asked from afar, "Did you just try to poison Kyoka nee-san?". Despite the distance he spoke across, he did not raise his voice. He spoke normally, and that normal volume wafted to the couple a little muted.

Suigetsu shrugged, "With nightshade? What, no! Come on! I just thought she'd like me more if I tasted like her favorite food."

"Oh, that's good," Suigetsu relaxed, relieved that his brother-in-law hadn't become dumber.

Kyoka had since taken herself out of this conversation. She walked to her younger brother and reclaimed her daughter, who looked up to her with big, wide eyes. Impeccably clean, Kyoka didn't have even a spot of blood on her, so while the father had to go get healed up and changed and all that nonsense, the mother and uncle could pass the time trying to get the little infant to smile.

30 minutes later, 29 minutes of which were spent preparing as Kyoka had instructed, coming back, and getting into position for the fight, Suigetsu was down on the ground, defeated.

Crossing one arm across her flat belly, Kyoka announced the results, "Then, since I am the more capable, I will continue working for the Oinin. I'm glad. With your new Susano'o, I can rest easier when I am away." Even with a little soot on her face and edges of her clothes torn, she still was an ageless beauty. One wouldn't think she had given birth recently.

The cratered and destroyed ground around the couple was quickly beginning to regrow and repair, erasing all traces of the numerous field wiping jutsus the Uchiha had sent out in a desperate attempt to find one thing that would work.

The head of green on the ground rustled a bit before lifting up to reveal a goofy smile.

The observing uncle, whose frown had only creased deeper with each new trick pulled out by his brother-in-law, glanced down at his niece. Not only was he wondering when exactly Suigetsu had found the time to master these techniques, but also how he had hidden them for so long. Sometimes… he forgot that his sister hadn't married a complete good-for-nothing.

Baby Kagerou pouted up at her uncle, holding a tiny mouse captive between her two tiny hands.

The uncle poked his niece's cheek, thinking about her future and her inheritance. "Come on, smile," he insisted even though he didn't smile himself, "You have to at least smile like your father or else you'll end up too scary."

Kagerou pouted.

"Can I grass-k you for a round two?"

Kagerou's pout intensified.

Strange things did happen here
[Kagerou's home - Age 11]

A small green-haired girl stood in the doorway into her house. Upon her small shoulders, a backpack filled with books and homework hung, and her eyes stared intently at a particular spot in front of her, as brightly lit as the rest of the room. She looked at the ground, where she remembered seeing the dangling shadow, then her eyes traced up, up where the swaying body that had cast the shadow had been, before it had been taken down. Up past the toes pointed downwards like a ballerina's. Up past the white kimono flowing like a fan dancer's. Up past the perfectly trimmed nails upon a familiar hand that floated like a puppeteer's mid-performance. Up past…

"Kagerou?" the voice came from further inside the house and broke Kagerou's thoughts.

Endearingly, cutely, Kagerou called back, "Daddy, I'm home!" as she hurried to take off her shoes and run into her dad with a smile and a big hug.

The tackle, soft as a pillow, was nonetheless exaggerated by her goof of a dad. "Woah ho ho!" he exclaimed as he pretended to teeter back like he had no strength in his legs, "Careful now! Almost got me there! Wouldn't want me to trip and topple over, would you?".

"Ahaha. Of course, Daddy, but I don't have to worry now," Kagerou shot back. Her face, at first buried into her dad's chest now popped up so that her chin rested on his body. Looking into his red eyes, the same as her eyes and unchanged from the usual save for a trio of black marks, she smiled wide and observed, "After all, Daddy has his sharingan on right now. When Daddy has his sharingan, he's not a maiden in distress! I don't need to worry about sending Daddy to the hospital!".

Suigetsu briefly broke out into a cold sweat at the mention of the hospital, but no matter where he looked, he couldn't see any kind of reaction to be worried about in Kagerou. With a laugh that sounded just like his daughter's, Suigetsu picked his far too adorable child up and swung her about in a full circle, "Of course! Your daddy is super strong! No way he's going to let anything take him away from his daughter!". Still laughing, the doting father carried his little girl the rest of the way into the house. Only when he reached the kitchen did he set her down, and even then, he didn't let her go until he got her backpack off her and he had tousled the green hair she had inherited from him. Though, he couldn't help but notice, as he always did, that it felt more like her mother's hair.

Meanwhile Kagerou argued not at all to this special treatment, and in fact, snuggled into her daddy's embrace. Rubbing her face into the crook of his neck until she was set down, she ended by showing her appreciation for being relieved of her backpack with a peck to her daddy's cheek. A peck that was very much well received. However, no matter what sort of excitement there was, of course she wouldn't forget about her very much loved guest. Twirling around, Kagerou was sure to ask, "Uncle Suigetsu, would you like some tea? Daddy is always being useless and saying everything I make is good, so I would love your opinion."

Behind the sweating father and smiling daughter pair, having been there this whole time, the young man Kagerou addressed nodded in assent, "Mm."

With a proper bow, Kagerou calmly requested, "Then, please make yourself comfortable."

"Thanks for bringing Kagerou home," the elder Suigetsu expressed as he watched his daughter trot to the kitchen.

"I work at the academy, so it's not really an inconvenience, Suigetsu-san," the younger Suigetsu, in contrast, was blunt and to the point, "This is also a good opportunity for me as Kagerou's teacher. Such as… where, exactly, am I supposed to make myself comfortable?". No matter where he looked, the house was a mess in spite of the normalcy exuded by the house husband. Clumsy as the man was, it was actually abnormal for his living spaces to be anything but meticulously clean. Letters were piled up on a seat. Dishes from both breakfast and lunch were still on the table, pushed into a cluttered pile on one side in an attempt to look less offensive. However, what empty space had been created was occupied by pages of some sort of document hidden underneath a newspaper. A jacket was strewn across one chair. Another chair had clothes on it. The couch had a yet unpacked travel bag and the armchair was being used by a couple of Kagerou's dolls that had yet to be put away.

Tired red eyes looked across the mess that was the house and could only give a weak laugh. His only excuse was his weakness, so all he could say was, "Ahaha. Yes, sorry, I just haven't had the chance to. Well, no, you're right. I'll get right to it." Sticking to his word, Suigetsu busied himself, moving stuff from one place to another. At the very least, as a father, he needed to make room for his daughter, her tea, and her guest. Otherwise, he would have failed.

"It was not the state of your house I'm commenting on," Suigetsu hastily corrected, "It was the lack of awareness Kagerou has. It is good that she has remembered what is appropriate to say, but she could have chosen a greeting better suited for her surroundings." His voice remained cold and flat, controlled as he was meant to be. His actions, on the other hand, assisted. The academy teacher helped his brother-in-law pick up and put aside the various articles strewn around the kitchen.

"By the way, Mochi says hi."
"Oh ho? Does she now?~ You should have brought her over, she's practically family now~"
"She had some work to finish."
"Is that so? So have you figure out a wedding d-PHBFFFT!"

By the time Kagerou walked in with the tea tray, everything had been put away neatly, or at least seemingly neatly, including the pillow that had been slam dunked into her father's face by her uncle. The only traces of a prior conversation were the goofy smile on the green-haired male and slight tinge of pink coloring the ears of the younger man. "Did uncle and daddy clean up?" the little girl made polite small talk as she set the tray upon the coffee table her elders had moved to and carefully arranged the cups and other contents of the tray.

"Mhm, we sure did!" the ever indulgent father replied to his daughter in an instant while his brother-in-law merely gave a reserved nod.

Under her uncle's scrutinizing gaze, Kagerou lifted the teapot with the poise of a courtesan despite being so young and gracefully poured the prepared tea. Because of recent incidents and her concern for her uncle's and daddy's health, the child had chosen a blend she was really super excited about. However, she kept mum, holding back her excitement with a smile like a proper lady. After all, she needed to show the two men who raised her that she was ready and mature. She had asked for her uncle's judgement to show him that pretty soon she could be just as good as her mother so he didn't need to worry. Instead, modestly, she directed the conversation instead to praise of her guests, and taking advantage of her cute charms, made herself appear endearing with a, "Thank you for your hard work uncle and daddy. I hope you can regain some energy with this tea."

The green-haired Suigetsu couldn't hold back, and while his hands received the tea with proper decorum and without issue, his face completely lacked any decorum as he smiled and squeed, "Kyaaaa~ My kage-sama is so adorable~".

The black-haired Suigetsu, meanwhile, quietly sniffed then sipped on his tea. He noted, "Ginger, ginseng… sweetness from honey and dried dates," took another sip, "and a hint of dried mushrooms and deer's antler…," and sniffed again, "The aromas are weak and intermingled. They've been dried, precut, and kept with each other for quite a while in an inappropriate environment. Then they were pre-brewed some time relatively recent and reheated just now. I can also pick out the smallest hints of smoke. Was this the tea you received as a reward from your uncle Kemuryu?". The cold expression broke to give Kagerou the smallest of smiles in gratitude for her thought.

Suigetus's red eyes, which looked so much like his daughter's, darted over to the small, bobbing green head next to his side, "Ah. A reward? I remember something like that… It was how many months ago?"

He was answered with a start, then a vigorous nod after a short pause to finish processing the judgement received. "Around 5 months ago, daddy," Kagerou answered with a proud smile, "Uncle showed me this tea and I heard it was really good for one's health. I really wanted for mother and daddy to try. Ehehe. I remember that he made me train in the smoke for the whole lesson that day, but it was worth it in the end~". Despite thinking she had done well in showing she was okay, the little girl couldn't stop her eyes from moving away from her father's. She looked down at the ground, and no amount of crinkling around her eyes from a strained smile could hide how much she missed her mother.

Even as one Suigetsu, the father, fussed and panicked quietly, the other one relentlessly continued, "Mm, but you should be aware that a tea good for one occasion is not good for all. No matter how enjoyable a medicinal brew such as this may be to drink, a guest cannot feel comfortable accepting a tea with such value or such obvious use. A simple, neutral tea such as oolong, black, or green would have been much better."

Coming to his daughter's defenses, the Uchiha quickly reprimanded, "Suigetsu! She was just worried for our health. Can't you read that much from her choice?". A rare frown creased his brow and turned his smile upside down as he spoke up for his silent daughter.

However, the next heir to the Kiritani was as quick with his tongue as he was his hands, "Suigetsu-san, if that were the case, then I would still recommend a variety of oolong or green tea known for its medicinal benefits. A tea prepared with this many ingredients, and each of such fine quality too, burdens the drinker with expectations and suspicions." He showed no mercy, even to his senior, and of course, none was given to his niece. These things were better said right at the front. Praise without substance did more harm than good.

"Still," it seemed nothing would make the father budge from his daughter's defense, "You could still be gentler. Her intentions were in the right place." It was something he would never get used to, his wife's family's strict and ruthless training regimen. Kagerou was still so young, too.

However, too young for training simply did not exist to a member of the Kiritani like Kagerou's uncle. "If I do not teach her, then when will she learn?" the strict teacher calmly retorted, cool black eyes staring straight into the warm red of the man who shared his name.

No words needed to be exchanged. The implied message was clear from repetition and familiarity. The harsher the training, the greater Kagerou's odds of survival.

However, in the end, it was the Kiritani who turned his eyes aside first, under the guise of drinking the tea that had been served.

This entire time, Kagerou had stayed quiet, slowly listening and digesting the information she had been given by her uncle. Her big red eyes had focused intently on the cup in front of her, occasionally bringing it up to sniff out everything her uncle had managed to. Nothing, she knew what was in the tea but couldn't say she was able to smell each ingredient. Then there was the matter of the tea having been inappropriate to serve. She thought she understood, but not fully. Some of what her uncle had said confused her.

However, as the pause stretched between the little family, the little Kagerou looked up from her cup of tea to see what was wrong. "Daddy~" she sang as soon as she saw the tense expression on his features. She hopped down from her chair and trotted over to give her dad a hug, "It's okay. Uncle Suigetsu is just doing what I asked. I wanted him to be honest so I can improve."

Even in defense of his daughter, it was unlike the generally cheerful Suigetsu's face to have taken on such a rigid, stubborn structure. It was even more unlike him to not notice, but such were the times for the stress to cause what was unlikely. Only after receiving his daughter's hug did the father notice and did the facial features relax. He looked down to smile at the smooth head of green hair, taking a moment to tousle it before looking up with firm determination. "Suigetsu, I've been thinking this since… Well, for a few days," despite the hitch in his voice early on, he spoke steadily, "I can't ask for a stop to all of Kagerou's training outside of the academy without her mother's input, but I think we should put it on hold for now."

"Training waits for no one, Suigetsu-san."

"Right, but she's already far ahead of the curve, is she not?"

"The Kiritani must excel to serve the village to their utmost, and to survive while doing so. Pausing her training simply increases the odds that she will be unprepared in the future, when she won't… When she is an adult."

"Nonetheless-"

"Shinobi don't get to be children, Suigetsu-san!..." Pause. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to raise my voice. Please ignore what I said."

"No, it's okay. I understand. I do not agree, but I can understand why-. Well, that's why I'm asking."

Suddenly, amidst the rapid-fire debate, a child's clear voice interrupted. "Daddy… you haven't made a single pun." That was when the little Kagerou figured out what had been gnawing at her throughout this whole conversation, and that was when she realized her daddy had been worrying for her as much as her mother.

But Daddy denied it. "Ah, is that so? Is that why my Kage-sama has been quiet so far? Because she had been pun-dering my lack of puns?".

The young girl looked up into her daddy's eyes, and even at this tender age, her scarlet orbs penetrated deeply in their search for an answer. She didn't want Daddy to worry, and she wanted to grow up strong quickly so she could take some of the burden off of her mother's shoulders. However, so long as she was young and helpless, they would worry. Turning to her mother's brother, she changed the topic, "Uncle, don't we have to leave for training with grandma?".

This was why her father couldn't overtly oppose Kagerou's training. Even the trainee accepted it.

Suigetsu looked upon his small niece and, seeing her, he felt his hardened heart melt a little. "Yes… But maybe your father is right and that it is better for you to rest for a little while," he suggested, not because he agreed but because he did not want her to feel forced. After all, though his brother-in-law would never be so crass as to defend with such an argument, Kagerou was an Uchiha and not a Kiritani. She did not have to follow the footsteps of her mother.

Kagerou didn't understand the complications of her situation between two houses. She didn't understand the implications of training for her mother's family. Young as she was, all she saw was that her uncle cared, but she could also see that caring made him weak, made him lie to himself of what was best for her. If it was mother or grandmother, Kagerou was sure they wouldn't have said what he did. Growing up with this duty on her shoulders, she knew already. She could always shed it, or she could live up to it. "It's okay uncle," Kagerou kept on smiling, happy to feel loved and happy to do her best, "I can do it. I can train. I chose this, remember?". The reason why they were so worried was because she was so young. She felt like, she needed to grow up a little.

For the Kiritani, that was all he needed to be convinced, "Do you hear that Suigetsu-san?".

The Uchiha was much less so, but… He could not win against his daughter, "I do…"

"In that case, I'll take her with me. She is right that it is time. Sorry that we weren't able to stay long enough. Can you clean up after us?".

"Sure."

With that, Suigetsu stood up and waited for Kagerou to hop off her chair and trot over to his side.

"Then thank you for your company. Until next time, Suigetsu," the black haired teacher nodded in farewell before turning and leaving.

Kagerou stood there for a beat longer. Her bright red eyes staring thoughtfully at her father, who accepted this already familiar quirk of his daughter's with an expectant smile. Her mouth, while always smiling, tilted and scrunched this way and that in though. When she finally finished thinking, though, Kagerou nodded to herself. It was obvious she had come to some sort of her decision. Her biggest, proudest smile showing, Kagerou also turned around to leave. Though, with much more energy and speed than her uncle. She yelled out behind her, "Bye dad!" as she ran off to catch up to her uncle, leaving behind an already nostalgic father.

"'Dad'? Not 'Daddy'?" Suigetsu, frozen to his seat, stared dazed at the very spot her daughter had chosen to strip him of his beloved title as "daddy." After the shock wore off, he scrambled up and out, "Hey, Kagerou! Wait! Ah…". It was already too late. She had gone, and he could only grumble and mumbele, "Already left, huh?... Man, I should take Suigetsu out for a drink so I can complain to him about this…"

Strange things did happen here
[Hospital - Age 11]

Those full, plump lips, warm with color now but overshadowed by the pale blue pallor of death from memories of yesterday, provided a single word from beneath a serene gaze: "Why?". There was no judgment in what was asked. The question meant no harm. It didn't even mean to lay blame. From behind that thin veneer of motherly warmth felt within her embrace and the gentle downwards slant of the eyes, she sought only a reason for her continued existence. Hollowed out as she might have become over the years, even until she felt like she was merely a tool and a shell of a human, what little remained within remained to love and, in this moment right now, to ask.

"Why?"
Were you there?
Did you bring me down?
Did you want me to live?
Did you need your mother?

"Am I?"
Still alive?
Still needed?
Still usable?
Still loved?
Still a mother?

"Do I still have a purpose?"

The weakness vanished as soon as it came and gleeful laughter marched in its place, laughter that didn't match at all the cold hospital room or the haunting event that had led everyone to this place. Tittering at her daughter's silly large eyes, peeking as they were over a large bouquet of at least a dozen moon and sunflowers, the elegant mother pinched her treasure's cheeks and covered her in the warmth of her lilting voice, "My lovely, your eyes will fall out if you keep on staring. If you are so surprised by one word, I'm afraid that you may face an early death out in the real world."

A little later the young child was asked to leave the room, and the waiting adults came in to talk. Shortly after the door closed, a petite woman with rabbit ears who who stood with her arms linked in Kagerou's uncle's tilted her head and quietly asked to be excused. From the other side of the door that opened to let Mochi through, restrained, confused sobbing could be heard, and then it was gone, shut away by the closing door.

"I do."

[Kirigakure Academy - Age 12]

Coughing, still, even though it had been a few days since Kagerou had trained with her adopted uncle Temuryu, the promising academy student stood in front of a classroom window, looking out upon the training grounds with her uncle Suigetsu. She watched the young teen he had pointed out, an older academy student, but only because of his late enrollment in the academy and unverified past. An orphan and a wanderer. At least, that was what her uncle had told her. She didn't know anything about who he was, but she could tell that his swordplay was certainly of rare skill for his age.

A little bit ago, Suigetsu had asked her what she thought of him. A few minutes in now, she figured she had the answer. "Musunde very talented with the sword," Kagerou gave her response with a confident smile, "I think he's even better than I am, Suigetsu-sensei."
"He is better than you are," her uncle was as blunt with his praise as ever, "and his techniques carry traces of styles from around the continent. Particularly from Iron." The Iron Country, a mysterious place that even he only knew a little about. They were reclusive. Difficult to gain information from and with little incentive to do so when they were so far away from Kirigakure. "This is a good learning experience for you, Kagerou. Go and-" Stopping mid-sentence at the sound of his niece's suddenly heaving breaths, the academy teacher rolled his eyes to her direction in concern.

Trying her best to hold herself straight and keep up appearances, Kagerou was bent forwards slightly, one hand on her chest, and her breaths coming in and out heavily. Occasionally, a wet sounding cough would interrupt her breath. Though, as soon as she caught sight of her uncle's hand coming to her in her peripheral vision, she would swat it away instantly, stubbornly. She would show him that she could be trusted to be alright. After a particularly long fit of wet coughing and running over to the nearest trash can, Kagerou finally got out the goop of black mucus that had been clogging her airway.

Her first words when she straightened up, still wiping the saliva off of her mouth, were assurance, "I'm fine, Suigetsu-sensei, and I'm sorry. I still need more training under Tetsuryu-sensei." She even mustered a weak smile.

"It has been a year already," Suigetsu commented, neutrally.

It was a comment Kagerou took to mean disappointment, however, and though she continued smiling, her eyes dropped to the ground crestfallen.

Awkwardly, Suigetsu tried to amend what he had said, "Resilience and dedication are not bad things, but you are still young. It is not good to destroy your body. We should revisit your training schedule."

Warm red eyes looked up at the cold black that had been watching her this entire time, and when the two met, the small girl smiled kindly, knowingly. Without prompting, and even when she knew it was inappropriate, she hugged her uncle, "It's okay. It's okay. I'll be fine, uncle Suigetsu. Don't worry, Dad already worries a lot about me. I want to do this. I want to become stronger, more reliable."

There was a silent sigh, only the breath of air flowing out through the nose, and then a delicate hand with long fingers was ruffled into the green hair of the clingy preteen. With one firm but smooth motion, she was separated from his waist. He looked into the red depths of the child's eyes, a red depth that he had found himself staring into a few days ago, when Kagerou was returned home unconscious after enduring several hours training in a smoke-filled room. Of course, she had the medic's okay that she should be fine with just some rest at home.

Though, those scarlet eyes had not belonged to a child, but an adult, and they had not looked up at him so happily, but with righteous parental anger. The daughter had said it was alright, but the father, despite the happy, carefree face he usually had on, had been enraged when he saw the state of his child. Had it not been for Kyoka's interference, Suigetsu very well believed that the older Suigetsu would have punched him in the face then stomped on over to the Kiritani compound to end Kagerou's training. However, Kyoka had intervened, and like every time, her argument won. Then, also like every time, when Kagerou awakened, the injured party herself would insist on continuing.

About to become a father himself soon, the younger Suigetsu felt a pinch of pain in his heart as he remembered what he saw when he visited the next morning. Kagerou was still bedridden and her father was still seated in the same spot as he had been the previous night. It was just training. Logically speaking, Kiritani Suigetsu didn't understand what there was to be so worried about. Precisely because it was training, where extremes could be tested safely and without risk, nothing should be worried about. The harder Kagerou was pushed when she was safe, the better her chances of surviving in the future. Uchiha Suigetsu should be relieved to have such a resilient daughter. However, again, he felt his heart pinch. Thinking about his own child, he slowly began to realize himself.

While Suigetsu was lost in his thoughts, Kagerou took the initiative to ask, "Suigetsu-sensei, do you think I should challenge him to a spar?". Children her age would probably be bouncing around, eager to show off the skill set they had trained so hard in and, no doubt, held great interest in to be spending so much time honing. Kagerou, however, had none of that. She surveyed her target calmly with feet flat on the ground, assessing what her uncle had said earlier about him and combining it with what the milestones expected of her were. To her, the weapon and assassination arts she devoted so much time to honing weren't skills she had a particular spark of interest for. They were merely where she had been told her talents lay, the most efficient paths to take, and the best ways for her to help protect those she cared for.

She smiled and tilted her head as she witnessed the party of interest make a sword motion she had never seen before, not at all dissatisfied with her lot in life, where she would regularly go smiling into a training session that would leave her unconscious after slowly suffocating for hours in smoke. This was normal, and aside from her father, it was the normal of those around her.

Even her uncle, an adult who had some doubts because of the intense reaction of his brother-in-law, had gone through identical training when he was a child. His only concern was that Kagerou's lungs were sensitive than most, and thus, perhaps not able to take the complete training no matter how much effort they put into acclimating her. "Yes," Suigetsu returned to the conversation. He would figure out later of a way to help Kagerou squeeze through this literal chokepoint.

"Okay!~" Kagerou put herself right to the task with a big smile, "Then I'll make a new friend!". She was already out the door, running away before her uncle could warn her to not hug strangers.

Down at the field, she greeted the supposed orphan with an obnoxious, "Musunde nii-saaaaan!" and, of course, tried to hug him.

From the second story of the academy building, Suigetsu couldn't resist cracking a smile at his niece's endearing antics. When he saw his fiancee trot in to intervene between the now squabbling children, his smile only grew wider.

Mochi, without any warning, picked up her soon-to-be niece-in-law by the hood of her hoodie as she chased after the understandably bewildered foreigner. Suigetsu couldn't hear what Kagerou was saying from this distance, but he only needed to see that large smile despite getting scolded to make a good guess. Taking a seat, the happy academy teacher cupped a cheek in his hand and enjoyed the show.

Flood
[The great flood of Kirigakure - Age 14]

"Suigetsu!" one Suigetsu shouted to the other.
"LET ME GO!" the other roared in awfully uncharacteristic fashion.
However, Kiritani Suigetsu would not release his brother-in-law, nor would he release his logical faculties, unlike the one who shared his name.
He struggled with all his might, but he wouldn't hurt the one who was holding him back.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity for both, a head of black hair ascended from the water, an untouchable grace, as ever, surrounded the slim and welcome figure of the beauty that walked slowly onto the shore.

"Kyoka!" a voice hoarse with grief newly turned into joy shouted as the green-haired husband splashed, oafishly in comparison to his wife, to hug the woman he was so afraid to lose. In tired, yet grateful whispers, he mumbled half incoherently, "You're alive. I thought you- Safe. Cold?" and so on, half of it relief to see her again and the other half concern. Although, looking at the couple, the larger man slumped into the steady arms of the beauty, leaning into her as if to swallow her, one would think the one who had only barely escaped the jaws of death had been the man, not the woman.

The woman didn't smile and, though she shared her husband's embrace, devoted her gaze and thoughts to the only brother she had.

The brother who kneeled upon the shore, all grip lost on his brother-in-law the moment he saw his sister rise from the yet torrential waves of the flood alone. He was to stand tall and with impeccable calm, such was how a shinobi of his caliber was expected to ask. However, he did not know since when, but he had lost all feeling in his legs, knees buckling under the weight of a grief he was so desperately trying to deny even now.

His head tilted down, dark eyes glazed in reservation, shielding the leakage of any harmful emotions. Though, even without rain, water streamed down his face nonetheless.

"Kagerou is safe, I've checked that her chakra signature made it," the husky voice finally managed to piece together a whole sentence. As his wits gathered about her, so did a dread realization, "Hold on, Kyoka, are you alone?"

Two women and a child were to return, but only one woman stood there on those raucous shores. That could only mean one thing for the other and the child, but a babe, that rested now beneath the barely settling surface.

"Cease the weeping, Suigetsu," a soft voice cut through the needless like a sharp blade, executing disturbances and distractions alike. The silence that had metaphorically covered this group of three shattered and the sounds of panic and urgency alike rushed in. Quiet contemplation was but an obstacle to what had to be done in this moment, here and now. Hear the orders and the cries in the immediate surroundings, not the ones long silenced in the new depths.

On command, his weeping ceased, and with dead eyes, the widow rediscovered the strength in his legs to stand, one step at a time. A look at an empty palm from behind black bangs, the only mourning colors he will be able to don at this moment to grieve for his wife. There was no time to reconsider the worth of his actions in this life. There was much more to do.

From the other side of that small yet solid back that had spoken so softly, Uchiha Suigetsu watched with great concern as the younger man left. He couldn't do anything for him, however, not in his position, but at least for his wife… "Kyoka," a gentle whisper landed, light as a butterfly, upon the ears of the woman striving her best to be an impenetrable fortress, an imploring request for her to be kind to herself, to release the guilt he knew she felt.

She brushed it off with a hand that tucked her still wet hair behind her ears and turned to her husband with a smile, the perfect picture of a wife returning home in great relief after completing a grueling task. A flawless act for the ideal she should be in this situation, just as how in the previous situation, the best person to be was the strict older sister. "Dear," she cooed, as she wrapped her arms around his neck, "Is our daughter safe?".

[Goal: Complete 30 Cooking Missions = 120 sentences]

The sun beat down relentlessly through the window opened for even the slightest bit of reprieve. Just a hint of cool air would have been a welcome gift. Anything to break the even more oppressive heat building within the kitchen. Even the smoke pluming out from the opening was a small blessing, providing some meager shade from the clear, sunny sky.

It wasn't long before the door connecting the kitchen to the outside was opened, releasing even more smoke, and a head of green hair stumbled out. Bent double, the young teen coughed and hacked after having reaching her limit in the smoke. On the other side of the yard, a beauty decorated in peach comfortably lounged in a chair under the shade. With a water dotted glass of an ice cold drink at her luscious lips, sunglasses shading her eyes, and her black hair falling over her shoulders like a waterfall of ink, she appeared as refreshing as a cool summer night. Definitely looked nothing like the wheezing, red-eyed mess leaning against the door frame filled with smoke, white clothes smudged black by the same thing that had chased her out.

With a pop, the straw of the drink was released from the lounging beauty's lips and the shades were pulled down just enough for glimmering dark eyes to peek through. A smile, both motherly and amused, curved the lips pleasantly. With the smile and more of the face revealed, the similarities were suddenly boundless. The same shape of the eyes. Though, drastically different colors. That exactly identical smile. Though, one more trained than the other. The same nose, ears, face. Everything was shapely and distinguished in the same manner. Though, one was older than the other.

There was no sympathy from mother to daughter. While the daughter continued to struggle to breathe, the mother inquired, "Should I arrange further training with your uncle Tetsu?" in the best way to genuinely care that she knew of. Her voice, like her face, sounded much like her daughter's. Except, while Kagerou's speech contained the undertones of the music she so loved, Kyoka's contained nothing so frivolous. Instead, what lay beneath Kyoka's words were charm and charisma, a voice so pleasing to the ears that it attracted and allured the unwary soul, and softened those that were wary.

Kagerou livened up quickly after that. All but jumping as she straightened up into fit and ready for and swallowed the last of her coughs, stifling them as violent clearings of her throat. Though, one cough escaped right before she goodheartedly decline, "No, mother. Thank you. It's okay, I am fine."

"Are you sure?" concern etched her mother's face as she straightened up and put down her drink, "Your sensitivity to smoke is not safe. We trained you in the art of smoke bombs first and foremost for that reason, but more training could not hurt." Like a good mother, she walked to her precious daughter and cupped her little one's cheeks in her hands.

Kagerou, who despite her sensitivity had endured that smoke ridden kitchen for a good half an hour before calling it quits when she finally felt like she was actually going to die from the feeling of being suffocated, smiled and shook her head. Her hands reached up to cup her mother's as she let loose a super bright smile. She spoke with utmost honesty, "It's okay mother. I'm not just saying no because I don't like Uncle Tetsu's training or because I'm trying to make you feel better. I do think I am alright," to alleviate her mother's worries.

No matter how great her worries, life was merely all but one large act to Kyoka. Seeing her daughter was fine, she switched masks, from that of a concerned mother to a proud mother. With a hand stroking her daughter's green hair, she praised, "If that is what my daughter says, then she must be right."

The act of comfort and closeness set each strand of Kagerou's hair back into its appropriate place, giving her daughter's hair that same cold perfection hers had. Kagerou, though, was making it hard for her mother as she was, in the midst of enjoying the physical contact, rubbing her head into her mother's hand and generally messing up that flawless perfection her mother tried to impart. Eventually, Kagerou one (this time) and Kyoka let her hand down with a helpless sigh. Helpless, and yet not helpless. Woman that she was, she only appeared as such because it fit the situation at hand. Exactly as how she only returned to her seat to retrieve her drink because these were the next lines of her life.

Holding up the translucent liquid to the sun and turning it so the light glimmered and sparkled on the many specks within it, Kyoka complimented the drink her daughter had made earlier, before destroying the kitchen, "This is a refreshing drink, both to the eyes and the tongue. These small bits of glimmering jelly make a fascinating presentation. Then, the tartness of the lemon livens up the sweetness of the watermelon and the strawberry, which has both, makes a fantastic bridge. Finally … as for the secret ingredient you teased… It is nightshade, is it not? Belladonna, the deadly nightshade? Hence why it is a drink 'That only the best mother in the world can drink'?".

Kagerou nodded, not even surprised her mother had guessed. Of course her mother would know what nightshade tasted like. "The base is a tea made from nightshade jam," Kagerou explained the full composition of the drink, "To that, the juice extracted from strawberries and watermelon that are crushed then pressed together is added and then lemon juice is squeezed in to taste. A small bit of salt is added as well to add to the flavor profile. And then, nightshade petals are chopped into fine bits so that they are light enough to rise in the drink with only a small shake, dusted with a little bit of gold powder, coated in a gelatin flavored with sugar and lemon juice to lock in the gold dust with the petals, and then left to stand on a draining rack so that the jelly coats each of them individually. The dusted gelatin petals are then added to the drink to create the glimmering effect."

"Kagerou," Kyoka scolded, her face stern. Kagerou sucked in a breath, still smiling, but now fully ready with her pre-loaded explanation of how she had already carefully measured and balanced the poisons so that it was well within her mother's tolerance range. However, that wasn't what came from the kunoichi's lips. No, what she had a problem with was Kagerou's carelessness in her introduction of the beverage, "The description is inaccurate. Your father would also be able to drink this beverage, and of course, most of the Kiritani clan."

The tension, what little of it there was, released all too quickly. "Let me have my moment, Mom!" Kagerou shot back in lively fashion, teasing her mom's sudden turn to seriousness, "I know. I know. Even I should be able to consume the drink, had I not been as far behind in my training as I am now, but let me say something special to my mom? Or at least feel like I'm giving something special to her?".

Kyoka merely hummed in dissatisfaction at the answer. Should Kagerou have this sort of "moment" on a mission, wrongly assuming that a deadly drink would be deadly to her target, she would find herself in a tight spot. Dead or worse. She could not be having something such as that happen to her precious daughter.

Sheepishly, Kagerou smiled at her mother's disapproval and disappointment, eyes looking away and head turning to the ground.

Awkward silences never lasted long with Kyoka, assuming they hadn't been intended by her. She was far too adept at handling and manipulating people to ever be at a loss for words. Swirling the drink in her hand, she hardly gave Kagerou any time to breathe before advising, "You should rest and relax Kagerou. Come, join me." A welcome smile was given to her daughter as Kyoka patted the armrest of the chain, beckoning her daughter to her side. "Put aside what you're doing in the kitchen. You have no reason to waste your time with it. We don't need any fancy foods or drinks, and when we do, we can simply have others make them for us." Cooking was an unnecessary skill, barring the basics that could be learned at any time, such as after Kagerou had been taught everything to become the perfectly prepared shinobi. What little time wasn't spent on training to ensure she stayed alive and well pursuing her dreams should be spent relaxing and enjoying herself, not slaving away in some smoky kitchen, hacking her lungs out. Kyoka worried for her overworked daughter.

Kagerou, despite her mother's best interests, had to refuse, however, "No, no. It's okay. I need to do this," her pride required it, "Besides, I think I almost have it, and I enjoy doing this. Just a little more, okay?". She would show Takeda that she wasn't one of those cliché "good-at-everything-but-basic-life-skills" tropes!

Unfortunately, her mother was too perfect. Quickly, efficiently, Kyoka shut down her daughter's foolhardy hopes and dreams, "Watermelon and fish have innately different cooking times and temperature requirements. By the time the fish is cooked, the watermelon is burned. Cooking based on the fish's ideal temperature will leave a dried watermelon. Adjusting portions will give too much watermelon to fish. Therefore, grilling both at the same time is impractical. You would need to be able to isolate the heat on each part of the kebab. Grilling them separately would require reassembling the kebab and also takes away what you're trying to do by grilling them together, to create a moist fish with a hint of sweetness and give the watermelon a more savory flavor that will make it a palatable option as part of the main meal as opposed to being a snack or finisher to it." Better this way then to see her waste time. It wasn't impossible, what Kagerou wanted, but again, it would take much time wasted to accomplish something so unneeded.

However, her daughter appeared to take the advice in a completely different direction. Scarlet eyes opened wide and sparkled as inspiration struck her. Excited, she concluded "In that case, I could apply chakra control and katon to the fire in order to create the balance I need!". Her voice did not shout or startle, but excitement could be heard infused within each lyrical word.

Kyoka smiled flawlessly. Mother-like, she stroked her daughter's hair but said not a word. Perfect, composed. Could she even be called surprised for her words being taken with a positivity and spun into an answer she had not expected? At the same time, though, she could not help but feel happy for her daughter. When Kagerou showed such energy, she felt a little bit of her rejoice, a rare spot of emotion she could actually claim to be genuine.
