I know a lot of us heart cat memes. What's not to love? cat_3nodding
But, specifically, I was thinking of the cat memes covered by Gaia, and turned into wearable items. It was my friend, Mistress Leac-Neko who pointed out that I have LONGCAT equipped, and wondered if there was a story behind this.
Longcat
About
Longcat is one of the most recognized cats on the Internet. He is known for his epic length, spawning photoshops and even an entire mythology around his magnitude.
Origin
The original photo of Longcat, whose name is Shiroi (白い – “white” in Japanese), first appeared on Futaba channel (2chan) sometime between 2004 and 2005 by a man from Japan. On 2chan, she was referred to as "nobiiru", which means "stretch." Variations of this included "nobiiru-tan," which was attributed to 2chan's /27/ board as early as February 2nd, 2006.
Longcat was first added to Urban Dictionary[5] on September 16th, 2006, attributing the name to 4chan's random board, /b/. One of the earliest archived 4chan threads using several comments to emphasize the length of Longcat dates back to July 24th, 2007.

Gaia decided to create the Longcat item in: 2008-03-17, called the Longcat Scarf. 
Description:
Once a cat that was long was owned by a man
Who posted its photo on the net from Japan
From 2 then to 4, it was smuggled 'twixt 'chans,
Doomed to be stolen again and again
4Chan and Gaia seemed to not get along in 2007.

Possibly this Internet image inspired Gaia to create the Longcat Scarf.
This is all I have to post on Longcat and Gaia's interest in this meme.
Myself, I wore this item almost continuously after I quested to obtain this meme scarf.

Yes! I did an item search for Grumpy Cat, but came up without a thing. (So, in answer to your other question, I think there is room on Gaia to create a Grumpy Cat item. Unless it's a matter of a licensing infringement. xD )
However, I brought my thinking to Wampus Cat.
Which happens to be a is a creature in American folklore. It is a folkloric creature with supposed shape-shifting powers, whose roots can be traced to Native American folklore of the South Eastern United States.
Cherokee legend has it that during a secret meeting of tribal elders, a young woman from the tribe secretly witnessed the ceremony, hidden under the pelt of a large wild cat. She was noticed by the elders, who cursed her and transformed her into a feline creature.
During the 1920–30s, newspapers reported of a "Wampus" cat killing livestock in North Carolina to Georgia. Though possibly due to early intrusions of coyotes or jaguar, the livestock deaths were attributed to the Wampus cat.
There are plenty of images of the Wampus Cat on the Internet -- and quite a few make the kitty pretty scary-looking.

So, in conclusion, I'm not sure if the Wampus Cat is really a meme, but it is a popular American folk icon, and can be used on Gaia to make a pretty cute avatar.

Mistress Leac-Neko, you did a lovely job of investigating the background of Wampus Cat. And your created avatar with this kittty item is quite remarkable!
Now, I must agree that Wampus Cat does not exacly classify as a popular meme, but it makes a unique Gaia pussycat item. Definitly memorable! cat_3nodding
It's no secret that my favorite Gaia cat item is Ultra Satan. I did a little bit of research on this kitty item, and even though it is not an Internet Meme, it is a popular Gaia character item and brings its own fandom with its presence,
While checking out visuals for cute, adorable Ultra Satan I came across this:

But when crossed with Ultra Satan it makes a strange animal.
I went into the Marketplace change room to try on the Ultra Satan cat head, myself. This is the look, my dears.
Well, I had fun with today's theme. Not quite a true meme on its own -- but quite a powerful kitttycat icon when combined with Psy's Oppa Gundam Style.
