Recommend To Me A...

Rulez
  1. Your job here is to convince me to try something! It can be a book, show, comic book series, a musical artist, an actual artist, or any sort of medium!
  2. You can't use the actual source to convince me! If its a comic, you can lift comic pages - if its a song, you can't use sound clips or video clips or gifs. Use your words!
  3. You can use a thing I already like, but you're still got to be convincing - I may use outside judging if its something I've seen, read, or heard.
  4. You can only win one of these, and one meme SoA from this event, which means you have 4 chances to win this one!

Convince me: This comedian is amazing! They took something bad that happened to them and turned it into a positive light. He got injured from a softball and has a speech impediment as a result. He uses the speech impediment to make people laugh. I first saw him on AGT and watch his clips of comedy shows on youtube. He makes me smile and forget about whatever kind of crappy day I had.

Title: Critical Role
Convince me: I started watching the second campaign earlier this year, and I'm absolutely obsessed. It's a group of voice actors playing Dungeons & Dragons, which sounds maybe a little boring to watch, but they're SO good at setting up interesting character development, a great story, and are also SUPER funny and just play off each other incredibly well. There's a podcast version, or you can watch it on Youtube if you like to have a visual with things (which is my preference,) and they even have little sets built for each battle!

Title: Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Convince me: A film created by special effects specialists? It's more likely than you think! Killer Klowns is a bog standard 80's 'horror/sci-fi' with the twist of 'Clowns are scary....and they're from SPACE' - every clown or circus based pun or joke or source of bone chilling entertainment like a grownup Goosebumps episode going for an hour longer than usual. And it's directed by people who worked in the special effects industry giving even this film from the 80's an ageless feeling and unique look.
For shlocky, cotton candy coated fun, check out Killer Klowns, one of my personal favourite 'popcorn' flick.

Title: LGR
Convince me:
LGR began as a channel named Lazy Game Reviews as one guy's project reviewing his retro console collection or.. Something. At least as far as my video-spelunking says.

LGR reviews retro games for the PC - from the early 80's into the early 2000's, as well as hardware, peripherals, and more. LGR covers a lot more than games in retro computing -- looking into old hardware? LGR digs in with stories and fact about how a computer came to be, or he'll tell you the story of how Fallout came into existence -- then go into the history of soundcards. He has many series on one channel as well -- LGRThrifts is his continuing adventures in collecting by hitting thrift stores, loaded with wonderfully dry wit and lightheartedness. LGR is a wonderful host as well -- Episode 2 is especially fun when you see him light up considerably from his deadpan snark. Curious about gaming or computing companies? Dig right into LGR Techtales. He talks about all of the esoteric, anomalous stuff you can hope for, including a two-part series on AOL.

LGR offers educational videos too -- curious about the history of Maxis? Well here's a sensible Maxis fanboyto talk toyouuntil your ears fall off. Maybe you prefer the delights of the history of copy protection? PC and Arcade is covered. Don't like PC games? Well he's done at least 1 PS1 game story. LGR also does LGRPlays, espoecially of girly games like Barbie and the Sims.

Ah, the Sims, you can't talk about LGR without talking about his Sims Reviews. He's done a retrospective, Let's Plays of the Sims 1 and a little Sims 2, Reviewed every Expansion and Stuff pack for The Sims 3, and now The Sims 4. And if you love the Sims LGHR ius EXCELLENT for reviewing materual you wonder at. Yes, spoilers hit, but he tries to note what people like and admits personal opinion. Wondering if a game's good? Asking me? I'll defer you the link to a video. Don't want my opinion? Take his anyhow. LGR seems rough, however he is fair and tries to be unbiased. Then he makes all sorts of fart jokes. It's great and yes you want to watch.

You see LGR has a sense of class. Even in the LGR Oddware series covering weird peripherals he's classy, althiough one item even he questions. Very muych. And then takes in direct sunlight I can not emphasise how snarky and smart this is.

Should you watch LGR? It's up to you -- while his media is often old, crusty, and all over, he'll reliably upload 1-2 videos a week full of information, fun, and levity for old hard and software, and, on many occassions, with a twisted smile and a strong John st. John impression as her snarks like Duke Nukem.

It's a worthy try, and can be found on YouTube as LGR. Unless you find his other channel, LGRfoods but then you get a whole new beast.

Title: The Adventure Zone
Convince me:
If you're a fan of DnD, this is already probably up your alley--but even if you aren't, TAZ is something spectacular anyway. It starts off like your average DnD campaign, but then goes completely off the rails with an incredible story, excellent characters, and genuinely hilarious commentary that continues throughout the entire series.
To sum it up, three idiots go to a cave, find some goblins, and next thing they know, they're saving the world from the unspeakable, hunting down magical artifacts of apocalyptic power, and going on dates at one of those combination winery/pottery painting places. If that sounds kinda vague, that's because I can't tell you any of the really cool stuff that happens after that first cave without spoiling it. :c that is the last thing i want to do.

Griffin is an amazing DM, and the amount of thought he's put into the world he's built up for the campaign is apparent from moment the party begins going off the rails. His players are his brothers, Travis and Justin, and his dad, Clint; the fact that they all know each other so well means that they work really well as a team (most of the time) and they're able to play off each other absolutely effortlessly. TAZ is equal parts funny and an impressive amount of character building all in one, and the arcs that each character goes through are well thought-out, well played, and everybody is given the same level of detail and care to make sure that these characters get to shine how they deserve.
There's multiple 'chapters,' so to speak, each covering something different. As the arcs progress, Griffin even goes so far as to throw out the traditional DnD system entirely, bringing in his own homemade game format to better suit that specific arc--I can't even begin to imagine the amount of time he must have sunk into the campaign, but it really, really shows. TAZ is a labor of love, and it's easy to get hooked on it.

also this podcast has legitimately made me cry before. that is not a thing that happens often.

Title: Sawbones
Convince me: If you happen to like informative-yet-funny podcasts then this will probably become one of your favorites! Sawbones features Dr. Sydney McElroy and her husband Justin McElroy as they traverse the weird and wild history of medicine. The podcast has been running for years now, but you don't need to start at episode one to get started - I'd recommend picking something that sounds interesting and rolling with it.Some topics include: A woman who gave birth to rabbits, Pliny the elder, snake oil salesmen from hundreds of years ago to today, health trends, earwax, medical astrology, murder, just about every disease under the sun, the history of medical video games, plague doctors - you name it, they've got it.

Justin tends to play the funnyman to Sydney's straight man, but the two are honestly both hilarious - when it was first recommended to me I was worried I'd be overwhelmed by all of the potential medical jargon, but it does a great job making everything easy to understand! They also care deeply about making sure they're sticking to the facts, so there's no need to worry about huge inaccuracies. It's just really good all around!

Title: Vattu
Convince me: Vattu is a story from the Overside comic world created by the artest, Evan Dahm, that has been going for a few years now - At present, it has 996 pages of backlog, from the birth of the main character, Vattu, to the comic's present, interspersed with the side-stories of a few other characters, including backstory for the Emperor of Sahta, the empire that's taken control of the lands Vattu is from. As with any of the Overside comics, there are multiple species, such as Fluters(Like Vattu), Sahtans(Like the Emperor), Surrins, and Grish. Each is distinct, with their own cultures and ways of speaking, and their own look. Really, all of Overside is like that, with each race looking different and some quite accurately named, like the frogmen, the machine men, and the Horned. It's a large world, and it's well worth jumping into!

Title: Raptor Red by Robert T. Bakker
Convince me: So, this is literally one of my favorite books, next to The Last Unicorn. Written by a paleontologist who discovered the first Giant Raptor (which was ironically the same size as the female Raptor in Jurassic Park since he was consulting with them at the time of it's filming) It's written on the view of the Raptor they found at the dig sight and it's just always been my one go to when I wanted to read something. I've always like dinosaurs though and this let's you "see" what her world might have been like. (Even though it's all fictional). There is love, betrayal, death, excitement, anticipation, fighting and the bond of family. If you like dinosaurs just a little bit it's definitely a good read.

Title: Critical Role
Convince me:
Jesse McCree leads a group consisting of Illidan Stormrage, Roy Mustang, Trunks, a grown up Kenny Butler, Gwen Tennyson, and Phoenix Wright on various (mis)adventures consisting of Dungeons, dragons, hilarity, heartbreak and character building and development rarely seen in modern media anymore.
While you can certainly simply listen to it, watching the actors play off each other and the facial expressions they make is sometimes half the fun.
Also. Canon queer characters.

Title: Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire
Convince me:This is the first book in the first book in the Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire. I would call it magical realism and it really is completely magical. The book takes place in a boarding school for children who have traveled through doors to other worlds (thing Wonderland or Narnia) and have returned to our world and no longer fit in here. Their parents don't believe them and everything just feels wrong to them now.

The writing is almost lyrical at times and flows so beautifully at time and flows right off the page. The book was wonderfully inclusive with its cast of characters with people of different races and sexualities. The main character was asexual and talk of her feeling often.

It was a fun fantasy book since it was still based in our world there was no complicated rule or magic system to learn, however you still get to learn about several different worlds that the children have travelled too. Plus since its a YA novel its relatively short as its only about 175 pages long! But don't worry when you fall in love there are a few more books in the series so you can still get your fix in wink .
