Nanogg wiped a sooty hand over his brow, looking over his work so far. He was sweating, hot, and tired in the Swamp miasma, but he had finally finished making his latest masterpiece: a necklace chain. It had required some fine, intensive work, and so much concentration that, when Mari had gotten bored and decided to go out to entertain herself, Nanogg had almost failed to notice.
Mari often flew off to do her own thing, but she always came back to check on him. To make sure he ate, drank, slept, kept his hair up and his face clean. Certainly, she always came back before dawn. However, she was, in fact, not there.
Nanogg carefully stored the shimmering chain somewhere where it would not be lost or fall through the cracks to the swamp below the armory, where he spent most of his time. He stood, stretching out the cramps in his arms as he looked around him. His gaze wandered, after being focused so long, until it came to the somewhat dingy clock.
It was getting awfully late for his lusus.
Nanogg wasn't worried yet. She was his lusus, after all, she could handle herself. Nanogg peered out over the platform, into the canopy beyond. Maybe she just needed a reminder -- so he gave her one.
"Mom?" he called, "Hey Mom?"
No response. Normally, he'd get a chirp back followed by the flutter of wings. Normally, she wouldn't go too far afield, especially at this hour. But now, nothing. Nanogg felt a flutter of worry deep in his guts. He knew what Mari could get into. He didn't like to think about what she got into. But again, she was a lusus. She could take care of herself.
Right?
"Mom?" He grit his teeth, willing an answer of some sort to come. The anxiety grew, and he knew that he had to look for her now. He had to find her, make sure she... no, she was surely all right. She probably was further out, or somewhere with white noise, and hadn't heard him. He just needed to remind her to come home. He just needed her right now.
Nanogg checked his shoes and scrambled down the ladder leading to a walkway below, trotting off to investigate in the direction he thought she might be headed, his eyes ever open for a small, impish white shape...
