Speak of the devil.

No sooner had Odette glanced over her shoulder than Kursha rolled into view amid a cloud of dust and debris. The squeakbeasts, distracted from their prey, turned their ire on the greenblood. Gathering in a swarm, they rushed towards him. Their claws and teeth dug into him in a dozen different places, and he let out a yelp. Rising to his feet, he began to beat at the animals with the butt of his rifle. The weapon met mostly empty air, and cursing, he flipped the weapon around. A second later, a burst of light exploded in the darkness. In the echoes of the gunfire the rodents scattered, disappearing into the gloom.

“Odette.” Though his eyes were still adjusting, he had glimpsed Odette's silhouette in the sudden light. Making a rough estimate of her distance, he marched over to where the redblood stood. Without warning, he threw a punch at her head with his left arm, hard enough to sting, but not enough to cause any lasting damage. Probably.

“What the hell?” he exclaimed in exasperation.

Odette did not want a moment alone with Kursha. After what he had done to Aandes, and after his previous threats, she knew just how deadly it could be. Could she run away fast enough? Not when he was armed, no. She supposed she just had to hold her breath, and try to play nice.

Then he hit her. It connected with the side of her head, barely hitting the side of her face, too. Any closer to the rest of her face, and she'd have a problem. Kursha too, knowing the press.

Immediately, she defensively brought a hand up to cover the wound. She cowered, doubling over the gun she had found in the mansion. Save for a gasp and some whimpering, she stayed quiet, as if staying quiet would help her stay safe.

Then she remembered he had asked her a question, as rhetorical as it was. He probably expected some kind of response. An apology? Odette couldn't bring herself to make one, even for her own safety. Instead, she asked her own question.

"Why did you... Why did you hit me?" She asked, composure lacking in her soft voice. She did not make eye contact with the greenblood, looking instead at the ground under her feet.
