She had arrived at StarCreek last night and couldn’t spare so much as a “hello” to anyone other than the movers, who carefully maneuvered her furniture and heavier boxes into the little house she’d planned to call home for the next few years. The entire day had been filled with cleaning and unpacking. Despite committing her day to working, Yasei hadn’t found the time to pull the heavy mattress in her bedroom onto her bed frame and dress it with sheets. So she designated the couch as her temporary bed, and ate a late lunch, exhausted, in the company of the coffee table she had yet to put together. Yasei would admit that moving into a new place was an daunting task. But right now, she felt a bit of an excited buzz. There was a certain satisfaction in starting over and in working on a project by yourself. She felt proud of herself for making this place her own, and thought her aunt would likely be proud of her too. Yasei finished her food quickly, but the excited energy persisted. She had to do something. She stood up and stared at the coffee table splayed out on the floor, begging to be built. Isn’t there something else I can do? She groaned inwardly. She had enrolled in some online classes but they wouldn’t begin until after New Years. They certainly weren’t providing any information or resources for her to get ahead on just yet. What else? She was supposed to start work in a few days. Maybe she could take a little break to check the place out? It was probably a bad idea to go buy a coffee so late in the day, but Yasei decided that it would surely provide her with the energy she needed to finish assembling this table. She looked back at what was supposed to be her coffee table and solemnly swore to return to her fallen comrade. With that, she put on her shoes and raincoat, dragged her bicycle out of the front hall, and braved the chill to go to Kona Cafe.

She peeled off her raincoat, noticing the empty to-go cup was still in its wide pocket. The rain had gotten to it and the inside was stained with coffee. After hanging the raincoat up by the door, Yasei walked into her family room and plopped down on the couch, too lazy to go to the kitchen and throw the cup away. Glancing at the parts of the new coffee table strewn about on the floor, she found that she didn't have much more motivation to finish building it than she did before. She stared at the coffee cup in her hand.
I used to get coffee for Auntie Rei when she was swamped with work.
Yasei clearly remembered coming up the stairs from her Aunt's boutique into their apartment with coffee, only to find her hunched over a desk with designs and paperwork scattered around. Swatches of fabric were pinned to the walls and support beams; ideas and tiny sketches scrawled in bleeding, black fabric ink on their blank sides. They were draped over lamps, painting the lights in the room in chaotic, happy greens and oranges....
She turned the coffee cup in her hand and reached for the pen she’d left on the side table. After a moment more of consideration, she began to write on it. After attempting to scribble her thoughts, she got fed up with the task, crushing the cup in her hand and stormed up to the attic. The space upstairs was wide with white walls. She had set up a couple of tables and shelves yesterday, but the room was otherwise full of boxes waiting to be unpacked. It was bare. Colorless. Hollow. She looked back at the crinkled paper cup in her hand and tentatively straightened it out as best she could. It was wrinkled and the ink she’d just written was a little smudged. But it had something resembling character. She placed the cup on one of the shelves, turned on her heel and retreated downstairs to build her coffee table.

![User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. She was pleasantly surprised when she realized she wasn’t overwhelmingly groggy and for once, she didn't feel the urge to throw the clock across the room. The next thing she noticed was that the sun was shining unapologetically through the thin, white curtains she’d hung last week. The weather had been warming up for the past few days. I almost miss the rain, Yasei mused as she sat up and stretched. She went about her morning routine in a better mood than she’d seen in days.
Finally, she pinned back her hair and slipped her feet into a pair of loafers. As she made her way to the door, she nearly forgot the little marker board she’d bought the other day. She intended to use it to communicate whenever her voice failed her, but she hadn’t really tried it out yet. She wasn’t even sure if it would work. What if whatever this… thing was, it made her erase her drawing before she could finish it, just like it did when she wrote? What if it was more of a hassle than an asset?
After a moment of debating with herself, Yasei decided to slip the whiteboard and black marker into her backpack. Once she checked herself in the mirror one last time, she stepped outside, locking the front door behind her, mounted her bike and pedaled to work. She had a feeling today would be a good day. Hopefully the first of many.

Out spilled her whiteboard, wallet, bike chain, and other odds and ends. She pulled her wrinkled apron and vest off and tossed it in a basket just outside of her room. I'll have to take those clothes to a laundromat soon....
She checked on the flower that now lived in a glass bottle on her kitchen island before changing her clothes. When Yasei was ready, she stuffed her phone and keys in her pocket and debated her whiteboard. If Ryan knows something about Star Creek, this might help me explain my curse or whatever this is…. A moment more of consideration and Yasei picked up the small marker board and left, this time, foregoing her bike to wait at the bus stop. When a bus finally pulled up, she paid her fare and sent one last text as she sat down. [- On my way. -] Yasei pocketed her phone once more, determined to finally get answers as she enjoyed the bus ride back towards Obyvatelè

![User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. She’d wanted to retrace her steps and see if she could have prevented her cold today, but her thoughts kept drifting to her conversation with Ryan. More and more questions came to mind. Who was that man watching us at the bar? Until recently, I thought it was just an urban legend. So why would someone want to monitor conversation about it? Is Karmala working alone? Buildings and street signs were passing, but Yasei didn’t feel any closer to where she was trying to go. Is everyone in Starcreek really cursed? If Karmala has accomplices, are they cursed or does she have the power to remove theirs? That thought, coupled with the fact that Ryan doesn't seem to know his curse sent a chill down Yasei's spine. She quickly decided that she didn't want to follow that train of thought anymore. Do people ever just visit Starcreek? Are they cursed? Do they take their curse back home with them? CAN they go home? That was an interesting idea. Don’t people come and go, like in any other town? What happens to them?
Yasei got off the bus and started walking, turning on Eredin Avenue. Was it this hot earlier today...? As she walked into her neighborhood, she pulled out her phone and started texting Ryan. [ - If at all possible, find out if visitors -] She stopped typing halfway through the text. What if I was onto something before? If I were terrorizing a town, I would want to have allies in the law enforcement and public defense. Yasei stopped dead in her tracks as she entered her house. She couldn’t tell if it was due to the creeping dizziness or the next terrifying thought.
If I were working for a witch, I would want to have an ally who can’t say or write what she’s witnessed.
Yasei looked at her phone, intending to erase her message, but the words on the screen started to blur. She lowered herself to the ground as safely as she could, trying to stay calm. Her hand blindly gripped her phone as she realized the dizzy sensation was taking over. She didn’t notice Ryan’s name or the “Call” option being selected.
Her eyelids, her head… everything felt heavy. Her arms felt weak, and she collapsed in her open doorway, faintly hearing the sound of her phone calling someone as she lost consciousness.

She tried to simultaneously push herself off the ground and remove the hand from her shoulder. She failed at both, groaning in discomfort. ”What…” Yasei looked up, seeing a familiar face. The sight of anyone, stranger or otherwise, in her house woke her up a bit more. How’d he get here? What am I even doing in the front hall like this? She tried again to get herself off the floor, this time using Ryan’s arms as leverage. She wasn’t sure how safe she felt with her earlier suspicions, but her trust took a backseat to the overwhelming thirst she had upon waking up. As she slowly pulled herself to her feet, the world spun and she had to wait for her head to stop pounding before she moved again. She felt way too hot and too cold at the same time. Yasei stumbled passed Ryan to get to the kitchen. I need water… Yasei made it to the kitchen sink and turned on the water, momentarily at a loss. Uh, why did I… right. I need a cup. And Ryan’s here, right? Yasei leaned heavily on the sink while the water ran. ”Getcha anything?” She tried to offer. She made no move towards the cupboard or fridge.
