Shicala

The beige Mylio paused mid-chomp at the sound of the voice behind her. She turned to face said voice and, with her mouth full of whatever that fluffy blue thing was, started to respond when Marije shoved a ball of some other yet unidentified edible in that direction.

Well, hey, it was a great idea! The more the merrier! Europa just beamed at Tethys, happy to see another of her breed. She hadn't seen another Naiad other than her friend in a long time, never mind another Mylio, so it was like a tiny miracle as far as she was concerned. Grabbing a handful of little round pink things off a plate and thrusting them forward as well, she boomed happily, "HELLO! Try these, too! They're SO FLUFFY!" still facing the newcomer, the hungry Naiad reached back to the table with her other hand to snap up some other food product to stuff into her maw.

One moment he was beaming proudly at his apprentice's enthusiasm, the next some leech seemed to fly by and then was food everywhere. "Kai!" He didn't think he had ever swam that fast to the blue naiad's side. "Hey kid you ok?" Amo was quickly checking him over carefully like a concerned parent. "That sounded like it had to hurt." His expression quickly hardened into anger as he looked to where the stranger had headed off and hissed his words lowly. "They did that on purpose." Seemed like not everyone here was nice...

His gaze fell back to Kai and his face softened. "Let me help you up..." He jumped slightly as he heard a voice behind them. He should have known someone was going to help them. "As long as Kai says he's ok miss....I'll errr...Help with this mess." He rubbed the back of his head before giving Logan the 'I got it' wave and started to grab at the floating food. "Bet ya you could swim around and eat these without touching them eh Kai? Might be fun.
" He gave Kai a smile.

Sadron took in the room. His world became smaller and smaller. He could see his target. One miscalculation and he would fail in his mission. Now for stage two he would need a volunteer. Ah. There we are. The naiad spotted a rather busty Darya who did not seem to be talking to anyone in particular. He slid up smoothly next to her.

"Hey, beautiful. Why are you here all alone?" he asked, pouring on as much charm as he possibly could muster.

"Oh, um, hi," the Darya stuttered back, blushing. "Just watching, I guess." She was rather taken with the naiad but a little concerned by his boldness. This was a party though.

"So was I. I couldn't help watching you from across the room." It was cheesy. It was bad. It hurt even Sadron's ears. Was this what he sounded like for real? Maybe he should lay off the alcohol going forward. Nah. Couldn't be that bad. It's just nerves.

The pretty Darya chuckled anxiously. She went from flattered to uneasy. Her stranger danger senses were in full swing, and she backed away with a uncomfortable grin. "Well, now, you see, heh heh."

Sadron's smile turned wolfish. "Come on, baby, how about we blow this place? See what turns up?" He purred. Pity this girl would never forgive him. She was pretty cute and all. Ah well, a necessary sacrifice. The male reached up to twirl some of the Darya's hair.

"Oh no, I don't think so," she mumbled in a placating way. She figured this guy had had a few drinks to many. It wasn't her first run-in with overeager males. She wished the circumstance of their meeting were different. He wasn't too bad on the eyes, but she could not tolerate this behavior. "Why don't you have a seat somewhere? Take a rest. Come find me later?" This would be a good chance for her to skidaddle while he was away. Problem solved.

"OH COME ON! You know we'd have a good time!" Sadron continued growing more and more loud to draw attention. He reached as if to touch her breast.

~~~~SLAP~~~~
The Darya huffed and swam away.
Sadron's cheek glowed purple. "Ow, that girl's tailfins pack a punch." Such a shame they'd never hit it off for real. She really was pretty cute.
He was sure, at least, that this would have attracted the attention of certain naiad or two. He turned to smile sheepishly toward the throne.
Now for stage three...
Phorcys turned, going silent as the Queen spoke. Much of this wasn't news, given the way rumors spread amongst the lake Naiad. Planning a celebration this big, there'd been plenty of time for word to get around about the Queen's new little ones. And the explanation about all these new faces and fins coming from the sea made sense. There were wonders out there unlike anything in the lake, he knew from experience. It was no big surprise that there would be other lost Naiad types much like the Aernyn who had found their way back to the Isle seasons ago.
That bit about announcing new Court members was news though. "New Court nobles?" he mused aloud. No thanks. He had a job. He was content with doing his job, then coming home and doing what he wanted with his time until the next hunting party went out again. He wasn't looking for more responsibility, thanks. Not like he'd ever tried to make himself noticed; he shouldn't have anything to worry about. Relaxing after the announcements finished, he turned his attention back to the beauty and the drink she'd pointed out.
Ah, a wine...a blush of some sort, he thought. Should be a good choice, sweet, but not overly so. Not too strong. She seemed a bit unsure about her choice, but he smiled and reached to hand her one of the pouches. "I'd say that's just fine. Here you go, dear." While he was still trickling charm into his exchange with the lovely lady, he was trying not to be overbearing or come on too strong. Something that someone else was apparently failing at. Raised voices and commotion drew his attention away for a moment; one of those voices sounded familiar. The sight confirmed it, and Phorcys was momentarily struck dumb with confusion. It couldn't be...could it? It had been seasons, but it was hard not to recognize his former superior.
"Commander...?"
Still questioning what he thought he'd seen, Turin had to admit that it was little more than a long shot. Afterall, how long now had Sadron been gone? Too many seasons; without a word and without any sign of him turned up by the search parties? His head told him to accept the inevitable truth, but he never could get his heart to agree. He knew it didn't make sense, it wasn't logical, and yet...still he hoped. Even when Sadron was gone for extended periods of time for a hunt, it had never been for this long. He didn't bring it up if he could help it, Tariel had enough stress...but there were days when he reflected on the present and longed for the days of the past when they'd all been so close. Just the four of them. And now...with Sadron missing-in-action, the suspicions surrounding the also-noticeably absent Aeroniel...their little group was down to two; just himself and Tariel. While he was obviously happy with the changes to their own relationship, he still had moments where he missed their old companions and what they had once had as well.
He'd dismissed the previous incident as an accident likely involving a bit too much 'party spirit' when another commotion drew his attention. Raised voices pre-dated the distinct sound of a loud slap and though his brain noted the familiar voice and tone, Turin's brain still tried to deny the possibility. There was no denying the sight before him however, nor that familiar sheepish, boyish, rogue's grin.
For a moment, it was as if all the waters stood still. Blinking in disbelief, Turin forgot about the protocol or the subjects vying for the Queen's attention. He reached out for her shoulder, gripping it tightly as he gestured towards the ghost come to flesh. "Tari..." He turned to meet her eyes for only a moment, squeezed her shoulder, then darted away from the throne. For an instant, he had only one thought, to prove that he wasn't seeing things. That the figure that had seemed to materialize out of the open ocean was real.
He neared and the figure didn't disappear, wasn't dispersed by the currents. The Captain slowed, hesitating only a moment. "Sadron...? It's....it's really you, isn't it?" He placed both hands on the hunter's shoulders, at last convinced by the solid scales beneath his fingers. "You're...you're alive..."
Without further hesitation, he pulled the hunter into the biggest bear hug he'd ever given Sadron. They'd never been much for such contact or open displays of affection before really, but Turin was simply too overwhelmed to think of otherwise. "We've been so worried," Turin muttered, at least having the presence of mind to not embarrass Sadron further. Only Sadron would hear him now. "You nearly scared us to death! We thought you--....that you--" He couldn't say it. It didn't matter. Sadron was back. As happy as he'd already been today, he felt his heart swell with the knowledge that his old friend and comrade was safe and back home where he belonged.
Almost approving, not that she'd let him know that, Tox remained behind Logan as he swam forward. It was about time one of them acted like a guard! Oh she didn't miss Snorri's sass, he earned the side and a promise for more. Times like this she felt so bad for Vera. Vera was an amazing friend and to be burdened by a husband such as him was unfair of the Waters.
With Logan taking the forefront and Snorri remaining at his post, she swam back to attend to the precious babies. In public, there was no coo or song but one touch to each her presence there while their mother decided on allowing anyone closer or not. Turin had yet to allow or disallow any of this so the course would remain the same.
Unexpected miracle of Sadron's returned earned a smile. Bringing her hands up, clasped in a momentary joy, there was a few seconds she forgot everything. A fryhood hero and childish crush returned! Only, it was no time to get excited to see a male that wasn't likely to know she even existed.
No, the slight noise from the direction of her charges reminded her of her serious duty. Things long since thrown away were better left there. Back to seriousness.
Sadron felt a sharp pang in his chest as Turin approached. His old friend...no, his brother. However, he didn't look enchanted. Maybe he could be reasoned with...
"Imbecile. Do not lose courage now. They shall all be doomed if you do not act."
That he knew, but could he do this?
He felt the warmth of Turin's hands on his shoulders. He saw the look of joy in his brother's eyes. It brought tears to his own. He laughed/choked back tears and briefly touched his forehead to Turin's.
He then found himself in a tight hug. This was not what he expected. There was no hate here. There was no shame. The feelings that they were supposed to feel were not there. Maybe the voice had been wrong. Certainly, there could be no malice in this room. With one hand Sadron hugged Turin back.
Sadron's fingers trembled as he reached for the dagger he had hanging from his belt. He grasped the handle tightly with his free hand, knuckles turning pale from tension.
I can't...
"YOU WILL."
But... I can't.
"DO IT. DO IT NOW!"
A faint flow resonated from the spearhead Sadron was wearing around his neck. The hunter's eyes dulled slightly. Of course the voice was right. The plan was to kill Turin and the babies. He in turn would die by Tari's teeth, but it would break the curse over the queendom. There was to be no question. Months and months of careful planning were being set into motion. He knew the voice was acting in his benefit, but... he could not kill his friend.
Sadron tensed in resolution. He would remain in control. He went for a nonlethal spot on Turin's side; it would hurt like hell, but wouldn't kill him at least. It would just give him enough time to get to the changelings.
"Forgive me..." And he sprang.
The light touch of their foreheads, the choked laughter, the hand on his back returning the hug; every little gesture reaffirmed what he could hardly believe. He's alive! He's real! He's right here, back home again! Fortunately, he could get by with it, being a Naiad, but given the enormity of the moment, Turin wasn't even sure if he'd have bothered denying the stinging sensation of tears in his eyes. They were tears of joy; why deny them?
His first reaction was pure joy; there would be time to sort through other feelings later. All the questions, where had he been? Why had it taken him so long to find his way home? Had he been hurt? He seemed in good health now, at least, from first glance. Probably later in private, Turin would give him a good punch in the arm for worrying them so much. Knowing Tari, she might hit him first, then hug him. Ha.
Still in the hug, Turin's thoughts were interrupted by a sudden twinge between his temples. Like a headache, but not...no, it was a familiar, if puzzling sensation. It crept back towards the base of his skull, like electricity tingling down his spine. He'd learned never to question his ability to detect imminent danger, even if he didn't fully understand how it worked. It just did; and it had never steered him wrong. However, it only warned him that something was about to happen. It took years of training his observational skills to find the source of danger in time to react normally.
This time, all he felt was a screaming instinct to MOVE! and he reacted instantly, pushing Sadron away as he did so. Whatever was coming would miss them both that way...wait, he'd just said something...instinct was driving his actions far faster than his brain was processing what was going on. '...forgive me?' For what?
For a moment, Turin was only moving with the momentum of the shove, slowly drifting to a stop some distance from his brother in arms. Then, he blinked, staring at the wispy trail of blood in the water floating upward. What? In shock, but not feeling any pain, he looked down to confirm the blood trail's source.
Yes, it was his blood.
He looked back up.
A dagger in Sadron's hand, blood lining the edge.
For a moment, he couldn't process what had just happened. If he hadn't been warned by his ability, if he'd reacted just a bit slower...
It would have been far more than a grazing wound.
Still in shock, he couldn't even feel the pain from the wound. Yet, pain showed clearly in his eyes as he looked back at his 'friend'. "Sadron....why?"
Did something glow or was it a catch of the light? The instance was so brief before reality it self was sliced.
All at once there was a silent moment, she dared not even breathe. Left hand slowly went to cover her open mouth. The other hand went to sit upon her heart. Before her wide eyes crumbled the pedestal Sadron occupied. In her ears rang the sound of shattering in the distance somewhere deep within herself. In that moment, even her heart seemed to stop.
Then like the sharp sudden moment, it was answered, Turin would handle...him. Her only concern was the babies themselves. Securing the bassinet for the girl's own safety, Tox started slowly pulling the babies back without sudden movement. The Princesses had their guards and the threat was being handled.
Just...how? How could Sadron be a threat?
Snorri had watched the captain notice something and make off into the crowd with haste, to a familiar figure he'd not seen in far too long. It had brought a slight grin to the guards face - thank Tariel he'd been alive! - as he'd saw their embrace, even if he had to look away soon thereafter to vigilantly glance over the crowd once more. As his eyes returned, however... it was just in time to see the captain back away, a glint, and small trails of blood. While the guard wanted to deny what had happened, he'd learned long ago to trust what his eyes saw and instinct said to do.
Right now, that was making sure Logan here didn't go get himself into a bad situation and making sure the princesses were safe. They simply did not have enough information to determine what Sadron's intentions were, so they'd have to assume a worst-case scenario.
As much as it pained him to think so, they had to assume Sadron had motive towards taking the life of the Captain - evident by the attempted stabbing - the Queen, and the princesses. Their leaders far outclassed the Queensguard and could certainly hold their own against any who dared threaten them...
But the princesses...
Snorri was painfully aware that they would be no match if Sadron decided to come at them directly and at full power for whatever reason. The best they could do in that situation was try and stall for however little time they could to move the princesses to the Queen's chambers. The little ones would be safe there.
He looked over as Tox quietly, gently began to move the bassinet away, his eyes locking in the process. He offered her a single nod as his eyes darted in the direction he presumed she would be heading, waiting only a moment for her nonverbal response before moving forward to touch Logan's shoulder.
"Logan..."
Snorri's voice was low, almost raspy, as he tried to whisper as inconspicuously as possible. His eyes looked forward at the unfolding scene, betraying who his words were for at all.
"Go with Tox and the princesses; I'll hold the post here in case anything happens and to make it less obvious they are being moved. We are following the emergency procedures; assume any who approach the princesses to be hostile. Act as if we are trading positions to return to Tox. Do not make it obvious that anything out of the ordinary is going on. And while this is unlikely to happen, do not, I repeat, do not engage with Sadron unless absolutely necessary."
"If anything happens, we let the other know in the usual way. I shall follow after you two soon. Do -not- wait for me to reconnaissance."
By doing it this way, sparing an overwhelming ambush from behind, it should force a number of barriers towards danger reaching the princesses... By Alu's grace, hopefully it would not come to that.
After greeting the bearded naiad with his eight-legged attachment, Tariel ensured that all those that approached were greeted with a smile, welcomed and given the proper attention that each deserved.
((sorry, I would have addressed each individual but due to circumstances beyond my control I didn't. I apologize.))
When the queen's consort put his hand on her shoulder she lifted a delicate hand to cover his squeeze. But Tariel diverted her gaze to see what Turin felt anxious over. She pushed the water through her gills only to inhale and push more out in quick succession. Sadron. Her bottom lip quivered only a little.
She let Turin great him first. It was safest. Tariel wanted nothing more than to punch him in the gut. She excused herself from all the kind pae introducing themselves and lifts herself up above the throne to get a better vantage point.
At the sight of blood after Turin met their estranged friend woke the instinct inside. She screamed. Not a scream like a banshee's shriek But more like hands pounding on piano keys. Everything paused. Only for a few seconds. This was a new "song" Alu taught her. Tariel turned to Tox, touched her shoulder to let the babies' Lady awake from the brief time stop, "hurry, grab the guards and get the babies out of here, take them somewhere secure."
Yes, this was for the sake of their safety as their mother, but also safety from the beast within.
Tox could touch the shoulders of the guards to bring them out of their frozen-in-time state. They could take the babies anywhere they felt safe. The Queensguard would know this palace very well.
((Naiad are still aware, but everything to them seems to go so fast they can barely see it, Also in case new folks didn't know, Tari's power is in her voice. and now that she's Awake, she will be more powerful.))
Still slowly sliding back, there was no time to do anything but shoot Snorri a look. This was not the time to play hero. Half the plan was a good one but if Sadron got freed and went after them, two guards was better than one. Sadron, holding her hand clasped tight, why would he do this?!
Mid-inhail everything stopped, she felt her gills freeze a moment while the world went still. This wasn't her imagination, the Queen had done something! Just what in the Great Waters she'd managed was a little beyond her whirling mind.
Then, with the Queen's blessing she was set free. Bubbles swirled as she took several deep breaths, "Right way!" The affirmation was slight, just enough she was sure the other heard.
First step was to pull away the hero. For the briefest of moments she left her charges still safest as they could be with their mother near by. Reaching out she grabbed Snorri's right shoulder yanking back with intent. "Snorri," The Lady in Waiting tone low but forceful, "Retreat, we need to get the Princesses to the Spot." Just in case he decided to argue with her, she added, "Now!" There would be no accepting argument. Between the beast wearing Sadron's skin and the Royal couple they were all outmatched.
Frozen Logan received the flat side of her tail to the back of his head and shoulders due to a much to quick turn. Time was of the essence she couldn't stop to attempt an apology. Instead, she just reached and grabbed him before he could belly ache about that hurting for too long, "Logan move! To the Spot!" Waiting for no objections, Tox gathered her charges in her arms, closing the bassent as a distraction, before speeding off.
There was a place, a place in the palace even Sadron shouldn't know about. If she could get there with the babies they would be safe until their mother came for them.
One moment, one moment while fleeing she looked to the orb by the Queen's seat. "Alu's blessings by the Waters please protect these princesses. Oh Queen do not let them fall to harm. Have mercy, Alu!" Silent prayer made in passing, hope beyond hope that the Spirits of the Waters would protect the innocent charges.
Acting the hero had never been Snorri's intention; he'd planned on just saying by for a moment for the other two to get a move on and then joining them soon thereafter.
There wasn't time even for that, however, as time seemed to concurrently freeze and speed up, a sickening sensation he'd never experienced before. Sound became muffled, strange. He wasn't even sure if he was hearing anything at all in the moment or if it was his mind attempting to make sense of it all.
And with a single pull of the shoulder, he was both metaphorically and in actuality pulled from it.
"--rri..."
He blinked and shook his head, taking a deep breath as his senses returned to him. Looking up at Tox, he caught the tail-end of her words and nodded once in affirmation. To the Dragnid with his idea; with all the naiad frozen as he was just moments prior, there was no need to be stealthy about their exit at all. Still, she didn't have to look at him like he was some misbehaving toddler; that haughty attitude of hers really ticked him off sometimes.
But now was not the time to argue over something like that.
Clicking his tongue slightly, he moved his spear to his side to swim more quickly and followed after Tox, passing her and taking the front. He glanced back to confirm that the other two had fallen into formation before they moved towards the Spot.
By Alu's grace... They would succeed in this mission...
[LOGAN]
Logan woke up with a slap to his face. All he saw was the telltale color of Tox's fins as she turned around and ordered him to move. "Little early on the slapping, ain't it Tox?!" He asked, following her until he caught sight of his surroundings.
He paused.
He blinked for a moment.
Then Tox used her firm voice and Snorri was listening and he guessed he should listen too. The tension was thick in here and he was pretty sure Tox would hit him again if he didn't. He just wanted one question answered.
"Who the hell is that? And why is he all stabby stabby with the boss man?" He asked as he followed Snorri and Tox out the side door. He was pretty sure he was getting fired at this point. Guards were supposed to know everything.
What the hell had he missed?!
"Damn..."
This wasn't going to plan at all. Sadron bounced back into a fighter's stance. Damn. Damn. Damn.
Suddenly, he back of his neck tingled in a way that only Tari's magic and years of exposure to her could cause. She must be sending the babies away. "DAMN!" He bellowed.
In that moment's pause, however, be it the overlapping of magicks or just the pull of recognition, the naiad had a short bolt of mental clarity. He could feel his heartbeat in his ears. He was torn inside. The voice urged him on, but none of this felt right. Something was majorly off. "I... No..." He shook his head trying to clear his thoughts. Was he being enchanted as well? Or was he already enthralled? Who was right? What was wrong? The voice, was it real? Was it his voice? No, it was his friend. His only friend... but here was Turin's betrayed expression. There momentarily had been his happy tears. Was that not true friendship? Sadron screamed in frustration and, dropping the dagger, grabbed his head in his hands with a pained expression of someone on the verge of explosion.
This wasn't right.
You idiot. You waste of life, son of a bottom feeder. I cannot even rely on you to do your job. Now I have to waste needed power to finish this.
The spearhead around his neck flashed and glowed with almost blinding intensity. His eyes dulled then went lifeless before filling in with the same dreadful glow. Sadron first went limp and then rigid. He stooped and retrieved the dagger before looking up at his prey with dead eyes and a crazed grin.
"DIE," he cried in a voice that was at once his but completely foreign.
Trusting her young daughter's Lady in Waiting had control of their guards, Queen Tariel only had mere minutes to finish what she knew she had to do. While it hurt her heart and she wanted nothing more to rip Sadron to pieces, she knew Turin could handle it. He's handled worse. As far as she knew. He has the war scars to prove it. Those naiads that depend on her for safety and leadership were more important. She needed to ensure their safety. Sadron had a different type of water around him. She could barely see it. It wasn't like an aura or glow, just the water was different.
"Hurry, Tariel, that tone only lasts a few minutes!" Alu reminded her.
The queen swam quickly around the dueling pair in the middle of the throne room. Gingerly moving the naiad and visiting dignitaries back away from the danger. As she touched each one, they were pulled from the spell. She couldn't evacuate the throne room or palace, but she could move them at least far away enough should both warring naiad call upon their greatest power. The naiad were lucky this throne room was giant. (Football field by football field.) It was originally designed to hold an entire Queendom, and also big enough to contain Alu's final power and contain her before she could cause any further destruction.
Halfway through her task, she paused. A very light scent trail hit her memories hard. She didn't have time to let Alu explain. But the time the spell wore off, she was physically pushing groups back.
"Sorry!"
It was not proper for a queen to be so uncouth, but safety is number one priority. At least most of the visitors had a chance now to dart for exit points.
The spell was completely over, and Tariel started shouting at everyone to try and find a way out. However, there were some straggler looky-loos (who can blame them, this was prime entertainment.)
((All Naiad in the Throne Room were simple pushed back out of the way of Turin and Sadron - you can ask questions in Discord if this is confusing))
