Well that had been a bit of a waste. Needle jerked his neck to actually separate a bit from the disgusting salt meat that he could swallow. Alright then. So he had a few bites more of possible leverage.

He watched Hyena devour the moldy orange stoically. At no point did the pit dog seem to use more of his hands than he should have been able to. He started to doubt what he thought he’d seen.

He clicked his tongue in discomfort. Maybe Hyena was still tied up well. In that case, Needle was still well under obligation to him. He knew how hurt Hyena was.

He moved closer, reluctance in the set of his shoulders.

”Don’t ******** bite me” he murmured, even as he moved technically within biting distance, extra set of arms tensed to pull him back if necessary.

He held up the rest of the salted meat. Obviously looking for Hyena to open his mouth, make some submissive gesture toward him.

”Come on, pit dog. Don’t you think you need this?”

He focused on eating, ignoring Needle as the man moved to approach. It wasn't until Needle commanded that Hyena refrain from biting him that he noticed how close the man was, reacting with a sudden sharp noise of surprise and attempting to put more distance between them. He bared his teeth in a threat, eyes wide with uncertainty and fear. Even if his hands were freed, he had yet to work on the binds at his ankles- though now with his hands free he had easier access to a few of the cutting tools he could use that were affixed to the raider clothing. Again, that would have to wait.

His anger faltered as Needle held up an offering of meat- something that would give him more energy and strength than the old citrus he had been given. Eyes moved from Needle's face to the dried meat, then back to the man as if doubting the other's intentions.
"...Food?" he spoke slowly, having his doubts that the raider was simply handing over precious rations.

He was wise enough to keep his hands hidden, while the temptation to simply grab the meat he knew it would only cause him trouble, so instead he awkwardly leaned forward and opened his jaws of sharp metal teeth to try and take the meat from Needle.

Hyena scooting away from him was a momentary balm. It lasted until Hyena bared those metal teeth, and Needle scooted back too, not eager to take any more injuries tonight.

”Whoa now” he muttered reflexively, still holding the dried meat in front of him. The bite of salt meat he’d taken remained tucked in one cheek. It was horrible--old, more salt than protein. But he wasn’t about to let it go to waste; not without knowing what Sox was coming back with, if he came back with anything at all.

He held his breath, drawing up more saliva, and opened his throat to swallow it like it was a pill. A disgusted look passed over his face, and he half-gagged before he got control of himself again.

Happily, Hyena didn’t take the oppurtunity to attack him, probably because of the remaining meat Needle held in his hand.

“...Food?” Needle laughed at the hesitation. He understood it, and of course Hyena should have it, but it was still funny to him, given how much trouble he was going through to do his duty and get the pit dog through the night.

”Just wait. There’s more where this came from. If you’re good.” He couldn’t help but be an a** about it, but he also offered the remaining strips without taking anything for himself. The salt meat was horrible; he could only hope Sox would bring back something appetizing, or that he could dig some sort of pipe out of that backpack so he didn’t care so much about hunger.

”Olly” he reminded the other man, sighing heavily to indicate his displeasure. He shook the hand with the meat. When Hyena leaned toward him and opened those terrifying jaws, he blew a breath out through his cheeks, and shoved the lot of it down his throat.

Watching carefully, Hyena kept his eyes locked on Needle offering him the food. It felt like some sort of trick- a trap of some sort. Even with the plea of a truce Hyena still held a healthy dose of hesitation for getting too close to the Raider. Needle wouldn't need to get too close to push the meat towards Hyena, the metal-fanged fighter quick to take the mouthful and scurry a short distance away to gnaw on the meat.

The meal was significantly tougher than he expected, needing to drop his charade in order to hold the meat in his hands to properly work his jaws around the dried mystery flesh. Growling and yowling like an animal as his teeth made work against the meal, he more or less ignored Needle again in favor of eating the more nutritious meal. It would do for now, give him enough energy for later, to keep going, but right now he didn't think of escape, of Needle and his new terrifying lackey out there somewhere. Food took precedence now, cowered away to prevent any would be thieves from taking his meal.

”So ******** clever.” he muttered. He sounded unimpressed, but in truth--of course, he admired the pit dog’s fighting spirit.

He wasn’t eager to move close again, but he watched Hyena try to swallow the salt meat, tickled by the fact that he couldn’t just swallow it and be done. It really was the worst.

Something eased in him as he saw how much of Hyena’s attention was spent on eating. He breathed out, head tilting up to the stars. He pawed through the backpack Sox had left, searching, searching.

He never found what he really wanted, but he found a short glass pipe and some basic smoking herbs in an elaborate pouch embroidered with dragons. That was probably why…he was starting to learn why Sox would want to keep any particular thing.

By this point, he had done at least basic binding of his worst injuries, the place where Hyena had bit him.

He found a box of matches, and sat maybe twelve feet from Hyena, lighting the pipe in his mouth without knowing exactly what the herbs were. A stupid, risky move, but--here he goes.

A sharp inhalation told him he hadn’t found anything special; standard, mild, soporific herbs. He breathed out in a practiced breath, venting the smoke through both nostrils. He didn’t actually feel any change in his brain chemistry at all; what a bummer.

Still, he breathed out in Hyena’s direction. He had no idea if the pit dog liked to smoke, or hated it. Whatever it did for Hyena, Needle found it very comforting, even if he couldn’t feel any immediate effects. ********. It was unwise, but he’d been hoping for something to knock him straight into blissful uselessness.

It was an impulse desire. He knew that even as he took his second breath in, and his stomach rumbled. He’d given Hyena all the food; that was something to regret…

Without Needle moving close or making a move to try and take the food from him, Hyena focused solely on trying to eat the meat. Considering he could chew through metal, the fact this ration was giving him such a difficult time should have been evidence enough that it was hardly considered edible. He didn't care, giving only passing glances to Needle as the man produced a pipe and smoke dried green vegetation from the spider man's pack. He had his food and his hands free, and would make an escape attempt as soon as he swallowed the tough meat.

With a hard gulp, he managed to stomach the petrified flesh, already feeling the surge of energy from it that would allow him to escape. Needle seemed preoccupied with whatever he was inhaling- Hyena didn't care, far enough away from the smoke to not be bothered by it. He doubted it was the same smoke used to make him sleep, the sickly sweet spiced scent of borage and tobacco to ease him back to his cage after fights he refused to let be. If it was, Hyena couldn't tell, working to try and free his legs of the bindings while keeping an eye out for any potential escapes.

The arachnid very quickly and silently moved through the highest points in the street, his many eyes stayed wide in search of movement or life of some sort. Occasionally he stopped and just listened to feel the environment,l waiting for those specific vibrations. Sox preferred to sit around as he didn't like running around in search for a meal, usually, it just came to him...eventually. But now wasn't the time to be patient, the spider had to step out of his habits and physically catch a, what was it, non-humanoid?

He was sweating across his human half from all the movement and the cold air felt pretty good against his exposed skin, he looked around to see which direction to check next when a small voice caught his ear. Sox cocked his head to the side and pinned his black orbs up into a small crevice in the corner of an unused door; there sat a lone spider plucking it's web in an unusual body language to show a form of greeting to its superior arachnid species. Sox could hear it since he can communicate with most arachnids and he listened to the small one who proposed a deal. It could tell Sox was looking for food and so was he but he needed a new location and had seen something pass by not too long ago. The small spider was willing to direct Sox if he gave him a ride - Sox looked a little surprised since normally the smaller types of his species were too shy and passive to suggest something like that or even talk to him of their own accord. It was nice. Sox immediately agreed and reached his hand out then the small male quickly climbed up his arm to a safer spot near his hair. Now had this been a female he would have instinctively ran away.

The boy had to admit he was happy to have a sudden companion but didn't bond with the idea, he was too focused on his task "Which way?" he asked impatiently and the spider directed him towards where he saw something.

They arrived at a location which was mere minutes away and he placed the spider on a nice crossing of wires near a building wall which was a dream home for most, he was almost jealous. The small spider gave a wave of its front leg as a farewell and left Sox to search the area. But just before he left the little one said something Soxxum translated to;

"Did you eat the two people on the bike?'

...Sox stopped and stared up intently with a clear "Why?"

The spider's beady little eyes looked down at Sox and continued to communicate some kind of warning with it's pheromones. "Slaughtered Lambs?" The humanoid cocked his head, he'd heard this term before, many times in fact but he never thought much of it or really understood what it meant until now, hearing it from his 8 legged kin somehow made him understand the danger of it. The tiny creature said something about the lambs having a Needle but Sox was suddenly distracted by a particular string of vibrations beneath his leather leggies which made him snap his head to one side.

He pinned his black eyes onto a fast-moving creature a few meters away. It ran out of sight but Sox was already locked onto it. Quickly severing any communication with the other spider, he jumped high into the air and up against a building, swift in his movements he peered around a corner to see a creature on all fours with blood dripping from its fangs with a fresh kill still twitching in its mouth. The beast was a furry thing, Sox had seen one of these before, the humans called it a wolf if he remembered correctly. Good enough? It must be. Sox went for it.

Returning to the old Cathedral where he left his precious person, Sox had two webbed up catches beneath his belly; a dead wolf and a mutated flapping pigeon. He scurried quickly inside with eager impatience and his heart melted in relief when he saw Needle was still inside. He scurried towards the strange cloud of smoke and dropped his catches. As quickly as he did that, he transformed back into his naked human appearance since it's what Needle preferred. "Eat?" he asked in hope that he did it right, his little fangs hid behind a worried frown thinking he brought the wrong thing.

Needle breathed out on the pipe he had found, the smoke starting to form a purple-grey wreathe around him, thicker and more colorful than what Needle might have thought to expect if he was paying attention. The smoke would make its way to Hyena, effecting them both, though Needle more so as the stuff was directly being pulled and held in his body. The effects would be nothing too immediately noticeable, but both would feel at least slightly more sedate than usual, slightly more friendly and open to those around them, less guarded.

Needle was used to these changes in his mental state, and wasn’t stupidly allowing. He did move closer to Hyena, still out of reach, to blow smoke directly into the pit dog’s face.

”Don’t run, dog” he advised, his voice lower, thick with what little pleasure he could gain from what he was breathing in. For one such as him, used to soaking himself in other versions of these herbs, it was only the fact of his empty stomach that relaxed him at all.

”Hyena” he corrected himself.

”We have a hunting spider, after all.” He laughed softly to himself, at the idea of a hunting spider. It was accurate, but it was also—ridiculous.

He spoke as if he expected Hyena to understand him, but objectively, if he were thinking about it, he knew probably Hyena didn’t entirely. The creature was intelligent, but he hadn’t exactly been afforded a lot of opportunities to talk. Whatever. Needle would talk to him anyway, and probably be shocked when he wasn’t understood.

He lazed in companionable (from his side) silence until Sox returned, his posture increasingly lax as time passed. When Sox returned, he would be maybe ten feet from Hyena, head canted toward the pit dog, a slight smile tilting the right corner of his lips.

”Hunting spider” he greeted the spider man when he returned, sitting up with minimal effort, back two arms levering him up to a standing position. He exhaled more smoke near Sox’s face without thinking about what it might do to the spider, his attention caught in turn by the animal bodies released at his feet and the man’s nakedness. The nakedness was—interesting, and more interesting than it had been before he started smoking. But he was also starving after giving everything he could to Hyena, and he was aware that if he did nothing probably Hyena would lunge in and eat everything raw before he could have a bite.

”Great job” he praised Sox with a widening of his crooked smile. Part of him hadn’t actually believed the creature would come back. He was—fine looking, but nothing that couldn’t be found cheaper and easier in Ozymandias, after all.

He could eat raw meat. He could even eat raw predator meat. He might get worms, but the thought of building up a fire and going through the long-a** process of cooking—no, he needed to do that. s**t. More work.

Before that, he needed to reward Sox for doing a good job, of course.

Scarcely believing, still, that this could count as a reward, he crossed over the dead, furry body and feathery lump of whatever Sox had gotten for them (not humanoid; that’s what mattered) to pull the naked body against him in an embrace.

”Great job” he repeated.

He had fully intended to run, to make a wild break for any exit he could find before the arachid assailant would return. Needle could only run so fast in a weakened state, and with a stomach full of food (albeit perhaps not the most nutritious of sort) Hyena was confident he would have enough strength to bolt. Fight if he absolutely needed to, but he hoped to play his cards well enough with timing and cunning to not have to resort to such a strenuous activity.

He responded to Needles' Lazy warning with a snarl, moving to try and snap to his feet to run but found the sudden upward motion to cause his head to spin violently and his heart to drop. It was then he could pick up the scent of the smoke, a familiar- almost comforting smell that brought him back to vaguely safer times, when fights were over and he was instructed to rest. Partially a Pavlovian response and partly due to the chemical composition of a particular herb burned in the smoke- a nearly extinct herbal flower that tended to grow easily in far greener areas than the wastelands- Hyena felt himself not only unable to, but unwilling to move. He recalled the scent, thrown back to times of uneasy comfort, along with the sound of hastily made windchimes and comforts of his mother whom had long, long since passed. He sat in a heap on the ground, eyes glossy and his body and breathing at ease, void of any sign of tense aggression in his form.

"Ssssssspiye…Dør..." he growled out slowly, rolling the word in his metal-fanged mouth like a cheek of tobacco.

Sox watched his multi-limbed human came closer and he tensed up when his body was touched and pulled into the man. The words of praise made him extremely happy and the treatment he was getting made him bury his face into the man's shoulder and he smiled. He slowly raised his arms up and slide them around Needle to copy what he was doing, he didn't know how nice people could feel when they were this close... Ahh... it's so warm. He clung tight and then he heard the voice from the other person call him out, sort of.

He turned his head to look and saw a mess of the guy on the floor who looked completely different from before, then it just hit him that there was an odd scent all around him and he wrinkled his nose and stuffed his face back into Needle. He didn't like it. The spider remembered what Needle was doing to him earlier and he started to fidget, the cute member between his legs pressed closer against him and the spider pulled his head back slightly to look at Needle's face. He didn't expect much aside from more of those lip service rewards so he stared with his black eyes wondering if the hunter would continue as he promised.

It had been just before Sox returned that Needle had started to feel a kind of hazy comraderie with Hyena—the inevitable kind that came from feeling another being engaging in the same altered headspace he was. He shouldn’t have been surprised that the pit dog might be able to indulge—strength in the arena wasn’t proof that one was immune to all weaknesses, after all; the idea that the two might align at all was just stupid—but he was.

He was absolutely tickled, from his lazy position ten feet away, by the time Sox returned. If the spider man had been any longer, he probably would have (highly unwisely) scooted himself close up to Hyena’s side to blow the smoke directly into the other man’s nostrils and throat, just to see what would happen.

Hyena was saved from this by Sox’s arrival and Needle’s greeting, and by what was happening now.

Needle wasn’t thrilled about Sox’s face being so close to his neck, but Needle himself had been the one to pull him there so he couldn’t exactly object. If he hadn’t been smoking, he would have been more concerned about it.

As it was, he took another thick drag off the pipe he had found, smoke leaking around his teeth as he laughed in reaction to Sox pressing against one of his thighs. He certainly hadn’t forgotten what a reward to this creature looked like, incredible as it was.

He couldn’t resist turning his head to blow the smoke at Hyena as he exhaled a few moments later, still feeling that same attuned semi-comraderie, along with some other feeling—a vestige of hero worship, maybe, expressing itself in a desire to connect, or neutralize, the feared pit dog.

Lazy-lidded eyes took Hyena in for a moment more, even as he shifted Sox against him, opening the man’s thigh with an assured press and giving him something to rut against.

It was surely some kind of death wish that had him pulling them both closer in Hyena’s direction, directing Sox down almost right in front of the dangerous man.

Cold and almost sickeningly sweet in his lungs, the fighter learned long ago such a taste in his mouth was a sign to sleep, a time to rest, even if it seemed the fight wasn't over. Most certainly now it was not, and he was far from any safe and hidden space where he could deem it appropriate to take rest. He shook his head vigorously, mop of white locks tousled into his tired eyes. A yipping bark of a laugh left him, amused by his own dizziness caused by the action and did it again. Like a child enthralled by spinning themselves into a swirling nausea, Hyena 'laughed' as he made his world spin more. He knew he couldn't run- not now, not when his legs refused to listen to his brain and the world moved as slowly as molten steel.

Hyena paused his strange game when he took full notice of how close the others were, his laughter turning into a warning snarl as he moved to shuffle away and closer to where he assumed an exit to be. Better to be closer to it when he was finally feeling collected than farther away. He was still unaware of the exit being closed off, as far as he knew it was still a means of escape. For now the sedating floral herb smoke of Needle's recreational drug was enough to subdue the Pit Dog.

Hyena’s yipping laugh registered on the fear scale, but Needle just couldn’t bring himself to worry too much about it. Sox’s weight on top of him didn’t tip the scale either, and when he moved to pull himself on top it wasn’t in reaction to any kind of stress but for another reason entirely. He took another drag off the pipe, holding it in his lungs for a good amount of time before blowing this last drag down directly into Sox’s face. That was enough, probably.

His caution had nothing at all to do with any anticipated limit or desire to keep a clear head (though that would have been very smart, in his current situation). It was more that he wanted to feel this way again, soon, and there was a limited amount of whatever-it-was. Better to maintain here, where he was comfortable.

Hyena moved away from them with a snarl, but to Needle’s ear the snarl sounded almost—prefunctory? Or, no, that was probably too bold, too assuming. His mind shrugged the danger off, pleased that he was simply in less pain than he had been for the past twenty four hours.

The pit dog was just barely close enough for Needle to reach out with a longer back arm, and just barely touch some part of Hyena’s skin. He did it without really thinking about why he was doing it—to judge the distance between them? To see how Hyena would react? To see how Sox would react? Unclear.

He hazily looked about- his intended exit was blocked- the glinting sparkle of dim light on delicate web caught his eye faintly but enough to alert the sluggish Pit dog that the way in would not be the easy way out. However both assailants responsible for keeping him here seemed to be more….preoccupied with one another than focusing on him. He had to push through the cloying haze of smoke. Push through, think straight, escape.

Slowly he skulked towards the exit, spotting some rubble he could use as a tool to help tear away the webbing. A shattered piece of pipe- better than nothing. Careful breathing, something to filter out the smoke.

It may have seemed that Needle was preoccupied, but Needle’s resistance to mind-altering substances was advanced enough that as Hyena moved away Needle was all eyes.

Still perched atop Needle, he ground down absently, even as he flipped the pipe in his fingers, transferring it to a back arm that could hold it out of the way.

He glanced down, but Sox didn’t seem to be responding; perhaps the smoke Needle had blown into his face had proven too much for him. It was that way, for some; especially those who hadn’t been blasting and coating their mental processes with whatever substasnces were available from a young age the way Needle had been.

What exactly was Hyena doing?

It was hard to tell. The pit dog’s movements were a little erratic; or maybe that was Needle’s mind, skittering between perfectly reasonable steps.

He stood slowly, head lolling to one side, expression incongruously serious as his back hand trailed smoke behind him.

He followed in Hyena’s wake, blinking slow. The pit dog had--something, was holding it to his face. He squinted, trying to identify it.

”Whatchu doing, dog?” he murmured.
