Tsunami Wing had been summoned for drills. They'd had their day off and G'er had spent the evening socializing with a handful, enjoying fine wine and some throws of the dice. Now was not the time for revelry and games, however, as their weekly schedule of training and review was once again starting a new cycle.

Even with a lingering hangover, G'er stood on the field, fully suited in riding leathers, Ironith crouched behind him, surveying the weyrbowl. He'd reminded the wing to assemble at the eighth candlemark of the morning, just after the sun had risen. The wingleader liked to start early and end late, giving ample time for improvement and practice. Granted, he often ensured they broke for a generous lunch break but he tended to work his riders hard.

Sipping from a water flask as he waited for the group to gather, G'er looked to the sky. It was a beautiful and terrifying place now that Thread had returned... and it was all the more important that they practice as one to unit, to minimize the losses and maximize their effectiveness in combat.

As the first few began to arrive, he took note and greeted each of them in turn, assessing the state of their uniform, the health of their dragon... how alert they were. He was all for enjoying one's private time but he fully expected alert and capable riders when duty called.

Ironith bugled to the dragons as they arrived, greeting them congenially if a bit formally, ruffling his wings in the morning chill. To his left was a chalkboard, set on wheels, with plans scribbled on them for illustration.

  1. All participants must assign all numbers from 01-25 to the card
  2. A pattern representing the wing formation being practiced will be released by the Wingleader. The pattern won't have more than 6-7 slots.
    Example:
    __ __ __ __ __
    |YY|oo|oo|oo|YY|
    __ __ __ __ __
    |oo|YY|oo|YY|oo|
    __ __ __ __ __
    |oo|oo|YY|oo|oo|
    __ __ __ __ __
    |oo|oo|YY|oo|oo|
    __ __ __ __ __
    |oo|oo|oo|oo|oo|
    __ __ __ __ __

  3. Each wingrider has a certain number of rolls they make, and a certain amount of points they can modify the rolls with, depending on the colour of the dragon:
-White: 6 Rolls (6 Modification Points)
-Green: 7 Rolls (5 Modification Points)
-Blue: 8 Rolls (4 Modification Points)
-Brown: 9 Rolls (3 Modification Points)
-Bronze: 10 Rolls (2 Modification Points)
**Note: This is for fun only. You don't have to roll if you don't want to, but the rolls are meant more of a guideline that can be modified
**The Number of Rolls represent stamina and the number of modification points represent agility.

  4. Stats can be customized:
    Small Dragon: -1 Rolls
    Medium Dragon: +0 Rolls
    Large Dragon: +1 Roll

    Young (1-5 Turns) : +1 Roll
    Mature (6-15 Turns): +2 Rolls
    Aging (16-25): -1 Roll
    Elder (26+): -2 Rolls

    Very Nimble +2 Modification Points
    Nimble +1 Modification Points
    Average +0 Modification Points
    Slow -1 Modication Points
    Very Slow -2 Modification Points

ie. Bronze Ironith is a Mature, Large, Slow Dragon so his stats would be:
13 Rolls with 1 Modification Point.

  5. A wingrider must match at least 5 of the points in the pattern to have a very successful drill.
Match 5 and you've done amazingly well.
Match 4 and you've demonstrated great skill.
    Match 3 and it's a productive drill.
Match 2 and you've done alright, nothing amazing.
Match 1 and it was a rough drill, there were problems.
Match 0 and you need private drill lessons to catch up.

  6. If a wingrider matches 100% of the pattern, they get an extra wild slot they can use on the next drill game. The slots can be banked and used at any drill game for the Tsunami Wing.

  7. To play, players randomize a number between 1 and 25. The result is then filled in on the chart.

  8. If the character has modification points to spend, they can add or subtract 1 for every modification point they spend. This represents a dragon's ability to swiftly adapt to changing circumstances.
ie. A 17 is randomized. The PC has 2 Modification Points and wants to match a 15 on the grid. They use 2 modification points to subtract 2, making the 17 a 15. After spending the 2 Modification Points, they have no more points to spend (2 - 2 = 0)

  9. The Wingleader will respond to people's posts and possibly modify rolls through encouragement or criticism (+1 Modification points), demand more (add another slot to match), or some other thing depending on how the RP goes. The wingleader will post every couple of day to give people a chance to respond.

As usual, A’myl and Viyanakerth were early arrivals, choosing to walk across the bowl instead of flying it. It was a simple tactic to conserve the tiny white’s stamina for the real work, and one that they studiously employed. As soon as they were close enough to catch G’er’s eye, A’myl saluted, and when they came to stand before him, followed up with, “Good morning, Wingleader G’er. Vee and I are looking forward to today’s drill, as always.”

And they were. Though A’myl never touched strong drink, out of fear of losing his temper and getting himself and Vee in trouble, he was, to his amazement, included in the social nights with his new Wingleader and members. He counted himself very, very lucky to have been assigned to G’er’s wing, especially considering some of the alternatives. He wasn’t sure there were any other Wingleaders who would accept a whiterider into their ranks without some sort of awful hazing ritual, at the very least.

Greetings, Ironith, Viyanakerth said, craning his neck to look up at the immense bronze. The white, barely the length of two prone men, practically looked like a hatchling by comparison. Will you be flying with us today?

Illa and Fenrith's Card

((Fenrith's stats:
Brown - > 9 rolls (3 modification points)
Large dragon -> +1 roll
Mature - + 2 rolls
Average - +0 modification points

Mature, Large, Average Brown dragon = 12 rolls, 3 modification points!))

Illa and Fenrith had spent the very first rest day since their new promotion with Tsunami Wing, better getting to know riders and dragons alike with whom they had only a passing familiarity. The point of that time was to get to know their riders a little more, to better assess what their strengths and weaknesses might be. They were not a jovial pair, although Fenrith was unfailingly kind in his rather formal manner. He bugled an answer to Ironith's greeting, landing where they might have a good vantage point for the time being. As always, Illa was dressed from head to toe in her riding leathers, this time with helmet buckled under her chin. It would not serve her to practice without every piece of equipment necessary to fight Thread.

They settled, awaiting their Wingleader's command, and surveying the current riders. The morning was crisp, pleasant to work in. Unlike the oppressive heat of Southern, Ista, or Igen, High Reaches demanded cold weather gear. Which, if their riders worked up a sweat, would certainly prove both refreshing and a bit of a danger. Illa's eyes skimmed over those gathered, checking for anything that might be out of place. So far, so good. Wingleader, Fenrith said, acknowledging G'er and Ironith's presence among them.

G'er watched as his smallest wingrider approached, giving them a cordial nod as they greeted him, “Good morning A'myl. Vee looks quite hale today, I'm looking forward to seeing what you can achieve today.” The two were small yes, and didn't last very long in the air, but their small size made them particularly useful in running between the bigger dragons in formation or pinpoint accuracy Betweening. They were like a pocket ace to edge situations and a couple of dragons owed their clear hides to quick thinking on the pair's part.

Ironith warbled in return, lowering his head to inspect the small white – it amused the bronze that a small dragon could be so handy and dedicated. We are running standard drills today to start, I will be observing in the air, directing.

Illa and Fenrith weren't far behind A'myl this morning as others began to gather. Some obvious looked like they'd dragged themselves to wakefulness and were letting the crisp morning air shock them awake. He gave them meaningful stares and curt comments about expecting their performance to be better than their appearances before turning his attention back to Illa.

“Welcome Wingsecond Illa,” He drew up beside her, “We are operating as planned today. Basic drills to warm up then switching into more complex manoeuvres and multi-dragon patterns before the lunch hour.” He appreciated that she arrived ready to go, something he liked his riders to do as well.

Ironith dipped his head in Fenrith's direction, Wingsecond. This morning finds you well, I trust? This was the first time that Fenrith would be flying drills with them and he was curious to see well the brown adapted.

As the last few trickled in, G'er motioned for everyone to gather around and Ironith lifted his head to roar, the noise cutting through the din and drawing the attention of dragons and riders alike to him. “Good morning Tsunami Wing! As you know, our vacant Wingsecond position has been filled. For those who have not yet met Brownrider Illa, please take some time in the coming days to touch base with her. I am proud to call her Second and I expect all of you to make her feel welcome, we are a Wing, we live and die by our brethen's sides and Illa is one of us now.”

He gestured to Fenrith, “I'm sure you'll find them capable leaders in the sky, and Fenrith's able wings will help carry us through the Threadfall to come. Today we will be starting with basic warm ups then on the multi-dragon practice – you all have your assignments, remember them and ask questions now if you have them.” G'er strode over to the board, where he'd drawn out a few patterns.

“Look this over, memorize it and ensure you dragon knows it too – I know sometimes they forget, but the better everyone recalls the more we move as one.” For the next several minutes G'er took the time to summarize the pattern and then discuss the individual roles of the wingriders by colour, answering questions as they came up. When he was satisfied, he dismissed everyone to go warm up.
