It was no surprise that her jumpy nature had quickly been discovered within the walls of the High Reaches. Not that Ichta had made any real attempt to hide it, between the occasional clatter of noise that inevitably followed after children causing her to jump higher than she ever intended to, or the occasional greeting that was shouted unexpectedly across a common area causing a small squeak of fear.
Some people had taken it to be a strange game - a full grown (nearly, at least) woman being so easily startled was an easy target, after all. Which was how Ichta had found herself stalked by, that day alone, twelve separate jumpscares that had nearly drawn her to tears as she did her best to finish her chores. Only once relinquished of her normal tasks did she escape to quieter quarters, an obvious sob held in from what had been a far too stressful day.
A lone store-room, an easy site to find thread and fabric for most day-to-day needs was where Ichta finally stowed herself away, settling upon a few wrapped bolts of fabric to begin counting string - not something as necessary in a Weyr, but it was hard to break an old habit from the Crafthall she'd come from.
Nice, safe, string. You weren't going to scare her while she hid in a store room....
Tsunake Whoops, I tripped and dropped an RP.

Goran found himself overwhelmed by life at the High Reaches.
Food was readily available, as were clean clothes that actually fit him and bathing water. The chores that they were expected to carry out were nothing compared to the grueling labor within the mines, but Goran did not have to attend either morning or afternoon chores. No, the Candidatemaster had informed him that it was imperative he learn to read and write. The progress was slow, but no one ever made him feel as though he were stupid. Perhaps that was because they were too intimidated to say it. Whatever the reason, Goran had thrown himself into his lessons, even if they made his head ache something fierce at times.
The hustle and bustle of the busy Weyr was almost too much at times, and this broad-shouldered young man found himself seeking solitude during his evening free time. Strange, to think he suddenly had time to do whatever he wanted. The store room looked like an appropriate place to gather his wits, and Goran quickly slipped inside before pulling the door firmly shut.
Unfortunately, he wasn't the first one who'd had this idea.
He found himself staring at the young woman before he could help himself, his eyes darting from the scar on her face to the bolts of string in her hands. Even if he'd wanted to say something, words failed him... and so, Goran just stared.
demon_pachabel I totally planned on making one when I got home from work, so I'm pretty ecstatic... I was going to title it 'The Meek and the Silent' so we are on the same wavelength!

And there they were, two silent people standing awkwardly (well, Ichta was actually sitting) in a small room. The person who joined her in her strange seclusion was a large man who's sheer presence immediately caused an internal hand to linger over the 'alarm! alert! danger!!!' button. That internal hand was always lingering near it, however. However, his silence kept her from looking too spooked. Her eyes did, however, remain wide as she looked first at his face (he didn't exactly look happy), then at...well, his face. He was looking at her and she almost worried if by looking away she'd be showing weakness. Kind of like she was a wild animal.
It didn't look like he was there looking for any fabric, so quietly she wound herself through the options as to why he had come into the store room. Perhaps he, like herself, had come to wind down a bit. Quietly, she offered him the bolt she held.
"Counting them helps take the edge of the day off," she said, offering the man her very best smile. It still looked entirely too worried for her own good.

His eyes snapped down to the bolt of fabric within her hand as she extended it towards him, narrowing sharply as they returned to her face. What trick was this? But before he could wonder much more, she offered a simple explanation. The worry on her face told him more than any mere words could. The silence stretched on between them for a few heartbeats before, slowly, Goran reached out to accept said bolt. He was careful not to touch her fingers, pulling the fabric closer to himself. It didn't seem as though she meant any harm... and judging from her expression, she was definitely more scared of him than he was of her.
After a few more moments, he sat down, though he'd already done entirely much more sitting than he was used to. His eyes didn't leave her face, though. In fact, it almost seemed like he was waiting?
In truth, Goran still couldn't count well. Maybe if she started, he could copy what she was doing and attempt to make an effort...

Her shoulders eased as he took it from her, and she quietly shifted in her seat, rising to fetch another small bolt to sit with again as Goran found his own place to sit. He was very quiet - Ichta appreciated the silence. Though he wondered if it was because she was making him uncomfortable. Was it possible for a mousy little thing like her to make anybody uncomfortable? She'd never entertained the idea before.
It wasn't until she'd settled in again, carefully unwrapping about a foot of fabric that she noticed that he was still looking at her. Ichta looked back at him, brows furrowing with some concern which remained unvoiced. Instead, she slowly looked down, gingerly running her thumb over the edge of the fabric to brush up the ends of it. The threads weren't the most delicate she'd ever handled, so her tiny nimble fingers easily began to separate them. Then she began to pull them, one at a time, with the end of her index and middle fingers so the ends were towards her.
Because of the silence of the room, it was fairly easy to hear her mumbling numbers under her breath as she did so.
"...one.....two....three..."

Goran watched her movements carefully, slowly drawing out some of the fabric after she'd done so. She easily plucked apart the thread, mumbling numbers to herself, and he thought it a simple enough task. Unfortunately, with his large fingers unused to such fine work, it was a lot more difficult than it seemed. His brow furrowed in concentration as he slowed down, carefully beginning to pull the threads. One, two, three.... four.... He lifted his head occasionally to frown at her hands, comparing her work to his own. Satisfied, he resumed what he was doing. Eventually, he stopped trying to count the threads, and merely focused on carefully pulling them apart, not wanting to tear the fabric.
This was mindless enough that it was... pleasant.

It was funny what was considered important to a textile sometimes. A threadcount up or down would change how luxurious it was and what type of person would use it for what. This fabric with it's fine, small, threads was probably used for formal-wear. Which meant she was playing with something rather expensive. She'd gotten up to a rather high count when she glanced up, half-watching Goran without moving her head - that would have betrayed she was looking at him, after all.
He had large hands. They were strong, and he probably could do a great deal with them, but they were less dexterous than hers, and she could tell the fabric wasn't the easiest for him to work with. Yet he was as delicate as he could be with it, earning a small smile. Silently, Ichta was up, quietly looking through bolts of fabric until she found what she was looking for. Without a word, she sat down next to him with another bolt of fabric. It was a thick fabric, like one would use to make a riding jacket, with larger fibers than the first one Ichta had chosen out. Mostly because she's been planning to count it out herself.
She spread it out, offering one end to him, while she began to count at the other silently.

Goran's careful concentration immediately shattered when the young woman stood, some tension tightening his broad shoulders. It faded subtly when she only moved to search through the rest of her fabrics. He didn't expected to be handed another, a frown tugging harshly at his lips as he studied what, exactly, she was offering. His eyes ran over the thicker fabric, then over the more delicate stuff currently held in his huge hand. Understanding flickered briefly across his face, and he wordlessly accepted the bolt and placed the finer fabric in her hand.
The larger strands were much easier for him to pull apart, and though the man still saw no need to say anything, his posture seemed much more relaxed. Perhaps people here at the Weyr were much better than those at Nabol. They had given him more than anyone ever had in his life, regardless of his lack of money. They sought to teach him, even though they could easily have found someone well-educated to be a Candidate. And why? Because he had potential to be a dragonrider. The thought was enough to make his fingers still for a moment, his brows creasing. Could they have made a mistake?
Well. If they had, he would survive. They could not make him go back to Nabol, and if they tried.... Slowly, he resumed attempting to count again. There would be time to worry about that later.

When Gorgan took the new fabric from her, she quietly picked up where he'd left off with the one relinquished to her. Thoughtfully, Ichta ran her thumb over the threads he'd already separated, nodding. While not easy, it did seem as though he'd had a gentle touch with the delicate fabric. Looking up, she offered him a small smile before looking down to his start on the new fabric. When his hands paused, she looked up again.
The slight crease of his brow caused a small concerned crease in her own as Ichta tilted her head slightly. While she didn't voice the thought, it could be read almost clearly - was he alright?
He seemed to distract himself back to the fabric soon after it, though, so she nodded, then looked back to her own, relaxing into the familiar task and quietly counting to herself.
