With how fast things had been moving, Cerpin was finding it hard to juggle his time very well these days. But there was one thing he would never skip and that was his training sessions with his master, Keionx. The orangeblood had a lot to teach him and it was doing wonders for his build and his confidence. He would never have to cower in a tunnel as war waged on around him again. Giving the knight in front of him a small polite bow, the pupil fell into a proper stance with his weapon drawn so she could inspect his form.

"Are we gonna fight today? I think I've gotten better!" Usually he spoke these words in a very cocky and boastful manner but with Kei, the purpleblood knew better than to brag. He was honestly trying to show off his skills right now, he wanted to impress her!

"Come on! Let's go!" Overly excited and unable to wait, he tried to take her down with a low kick aimed at her knees. He was far too obvious though and the kick was easy to dodge!

In all honesty, Keionx thought so too. Cerpin had already come a long way from when he'd boldly walked up and asked her to train him, sweeps ago. She'd worked him hard, and the fruits of her - of his - labor were apparent in his stance, his moves, his muscles, his confidence... though the last one had probably been there before, in exactly that magnitude.

"Lets see it, then!" she said, letting him make the first move. She dodged easily and moved from the dodge to a strike.

She sidestepped his first blow and delivered a painful strike of her own. He flinched slightly at the impact but went with the motion to lessen the force behind her swing. Keionx never wasted a movement if she could help it. It was something he was still striving to master and he fell back into his stance.

"Take this!" He growled, charging back at the girl with his sword dragging behind him in preparation for a swing. Cerpin opted to fake her out though and launched a low kick towards her legs to trip her up. That fancy footwork of hers was one of her core advantages over him and he needed to figure out a good counter to it.

Keionx winced at the dragging sword. That was a good way to lose an edge - she'd told him that! And yet, he still persis... Wait was this a distraction? She realized it nearly too late, barely managing to block his rush with her shield.

"A good idea." she commented. Such trickery was all right on the battlefield, and he was smart enough to pull it off. He wanted to hobble her? She would have to watch out for it. She'd talk to him about dulling his blade later.

"Twould like to see thee try that again!" actually, she would. It was a sound strategy, after all. Especially against her.

"Yeah? Well how about this?" He tried the same move again, carrying his weapon as if ready to strike but this time, he opted to swing at the arm carrying the shield instead. He needed to get her to drop it somehow or weaken the reaction time otherwise he was never going to get past that barrier.

He was, indeed, going to try again. She did want to see it, but so soon? So announced?

Don't announce thy moves, damn it, Cerpin... She thought as she readied herself to block her legs and dodge again... except this time, he had faked her out.

"Ah!" she said, shocked, as his sword struck her. "I..." It took her a moment to regroup, her shield now feeling much heavier, her arm a little slower to bring it to bear. "Very good." she said.

Damn. She needed more armor on that arm, but how much weight would be too much?

"That is something to look out for." It was time for a fake out of her own.

She moved as she spoke, trying to startle him into clashing swords... and then dodged and slashed while he focused on the block.

"s**t!" Cerpin yelped as she faked him out, taking a hard hit from his master. Purple oozed down his arm and he swore. It stung and he could feel it weakening his swings. Keionx was not fighting him with her all but she wasn't using kid gloves either. He traded blows with her a few rounds while getting driven backwards.

"Gog dammit!" He kicked at the swamp water, sending it upwards at her face while turning tail to get some distance between them. He was usually trying to stay up close against his opponents but she was much stronger than him at close combat. He'd have to think of something else.

Keionx shielded her eyes with her shield, the swamp water (harmless as it already was) splashing against the reinforced metal. It bought Cerpin time to retreat to a distance, and here, Keionx allowed herself some wariness.

She had practiced for range. She had ranged fallback weapons when she was fully geared up for battle - the trusty and ever useful throwing knife, for one. But she didn't have them now, and this was a situation she would have to deal with in a real battle.

Frowning with concentration, she huddled behind her shield... and charged.

His strength was good. His courage was great. But Cerpin's stamina had a long ways to go. He gasped for breath as Keionx charged him and he was unable to keep her from catching up. Bracing against a tree for support, he did his best to parry with his other hand and sword. His blows were getting much weaker and slower by now but he had to keep going. This training would be for nothing if he just gave up. Cerpin wanted to impress his teacher.

"Nck- Gh-" He grunted, struggling to keep up with her fancy footwork and cleverly aimed strikes. While he had made some progress since his nights training under her as a child, he was not up to her level still. Which was, well, to be expected, but it still sucked to have such a large gap!

Keionx's stamina was earned through long hard training, not only by training herself, but as she trained with her student. As she built buildings and hiked (literal) mountains, she had trained her spirit as well as her body.

This fight was a good one. Cerpin was showing his mettle, and she was proud. But he was tiring.

It was almost over.

Kei harried him with swift blows, watching his movements until...

"Cerpin!" she declared, kicking out with her foot to trip him. His exhausted legs couldn't dodge away in time, and the moment he fell to the ground, she was over him, sword at his throat. "Thou art defeated!" her voice rang out, as final as the bell in a wrestling ring.

Keionx could have kept going for a long while yet if she'd wanted to or had to. But frankly her shield arm was hurting, her arm was tiring, and she could feel the sweat gathering and lingering in her armor in something that would stink horribly later.

This wasn't a life or death battle. This was a spar. Keionx was ready to be done with it for the night.

Maybe take a bath, clean her gear, take care of her and Cerpin's injuries, plan out how to help him shore up his weaknesses...

She sheathed her sword and gave him a moment. "... dost thou want to lie there for a little bit?" she asked, voice full of sympathy. "Thou fought very well, and hath learned a lot. There beith room for growth, and I see now what we need to work on..."

We... including herself.

Not all flaws could be corrected. Everyone had strengths and weaknesses and that was well - even the great warrior Achils had had a deadly weak point. Weaknesses were part of what made one strong, Keionx had learned that. But if one was aware of their flaws, then they could overcome them when they needed to, and could find greatness in a poor situation...

That was what her lusus had told her anyway, long ago, when she'd never even realized that she'd had weaknesses.

His chest rose and fell in sporadic difficult breathing and he looked up at the sky while she spoke. It was exhausting to do this training but at least his motivation was always up there in sight, twinkling above him.

"Yeah... I'm gonna lay for a bit." He gave her a weary crooked smile to let her know he was okay. Cerpin knew his teacher had a tendency to take things very seriously and would worry if he didn't reassure her. It was the hero streak in her that made her care for others so strongly. He spread his arms out and let the cool air breeze across him. He really ought to be stretching as a proper cool down but... ******** it, he was tired.

"Same time next week?" Creatures like Cerpin were not good with routine, it did not come naturally to him. So to make the time and effort to stick to a schedule for this meant it was honestly important to him. Otherwise, he would've spent the time chasing some other daydream or corrupting another youth. He nodded at her answer.

"Thanks again, Kei, for everything." His eyes closed.
