Has anyone read it yet? It's been out for a good few days now.
I must say, I'm highly disappointed. I thought that since someone other than Maki Murakami had written it, it would lack certain elements I didn't like in the manga, namely, the insane things that happen. But I was wrong. On page 15, Shuichi climbs a lamp post and yells from the top of it, and shortly later K enters the scene from the ceiling insisting that's where all the Japanese spies are.
The writing is also very stiff. It sounds kind of like a bare bones description of what you would see if it was a manga, and most of the dialogue comes off as really fake, obviously an attempt to explain what's going on. (Like when Hiro says, "Our debut single, the Power of Love, is at the top of the charts," no one would say that, obviously everyone in the room already knew what their debut single is).

I saw the novel and thought it was interesting, but ultimately not interesting enough to pick up. If I want to read fanfiction, I want to read it for free.

It's not fanfiction. Maki Murakami worked on it, too. The story is obviously hers, anyway.

For-Chan Cookie If I want to read fanfiction, I want to read it for free. That's what I thought. I'm still debating whether to buy it. What actually happens in it? I was like "There's a novel?" then "Oh, they have Loveless in, i'll get that." and it hasn't been back in stock yet. Should I buy it?

I'd only suggest buying it if you really like the manga, because that's what it's just like, except in prose form.
I don't like the comparison to fanfiction, because under that logic, why read any book? You can find fanfiction that's better than the book, and is about whatever pairing you want.

I just finished the novel yesterday. I thought it was pretty good, but abit short. I enjoy my time reading it.

I thought the novel was fairly good. Fit well within the world of the show. Could have been an episode.
I just felt odd reading it, though. It's a professional work, but I felt like I was reading book form fanfiction. XD
The description on the back is COMPLETELY WRONG. Damn you Tokyopop.

I picked it up and looked through a page or two of it... okay, a couple of sentences... and wasn't really impressed. I've gotta agree on the "stiff writing" thing. "'Oh, I could just eat you up Shuichi!' Hiro said." It felt like it was lacking emotion. Or at least some of it did. .__.
I hope I don't sound bad for only looking through a paragraph or so. I just so happened to turn to a steamy scene after that page, and it scared me off. XD; I can't really know for sure what it's like because if I even mention the title Gravitation, Mom is all UH, NO. D< Next time we go to Borders, i'll look through more of it while she isn't looking. ninja

Oh man i want to get this novel sooooo bad and i went today to get it but the book store i went to didn't have it and without thinking i went wasted the rest of my money! I could have just gone to the book store across the street! But the point is i wasn't able to get it! ANd infact cuz i wasn't able to get it i am going to send my friend to get it for me!
I hear it was really good! I wonder if thats true!

iwanttobeasleep I don't like the comparison to fanfiction, because under that logic, why read any book? You can find fanfiction that's better than the book, and is about whatever pairing you want. Hell, some "professional" work is fanfiction published. There's not a lot of difference between fanfiction and something that you can buy on a shelf. The main difference is that one is published and one isn't. The other big difference is that someone's getting paid to put a book out whereas fanfic authors are just in it for fun. Personally, I think claiming that fanfiction can't be on the level of a published work is more insulting than putting published works on the level of fanfiction. There's some damn good fanfiction out there and some super shitty professional work too.

I saw the novel and passed it buy, from the sounds of it I made the right choice. Just because someone can draw decent manga, that doesn't mean they should be writing novels. Not to mention that it's been translated from its original language. Depending on both the author and the translator, all sorts of things could be weird about it.
And I gotta agree with the fanfiction vs. published works thingy. Some published stuff sucks big time, especially a lot of this new vanity press stuff being churned out and just about any romance novel! Some fanfiction deserves to be printed in a book to keep forever because it's just that good. It all varies *shrugs*
