The rain had started earlier that day, much earlier, before the sun had much time to peak over the mountains in the distance. Prisca had still been asleep, curled in a little nest of tall grass she had patted down, trying to keep her bits of clothing free from getting dirty as she moved in her sleep. She would need to find some permanent place to settle down. Somewhere without dirt would be preferable. Or at least somewhere she could build a little shelter. At the moment, she wasn't sure where exactly to do this. The world was so wide. There were endless possibilities for living.

A few pecks had started to fall. The Light B'alam had taken no notice of it at first. Her face was stuffed into her side with her tail curled across. Like a little pillow. The fur on her back and sides collected the rain before it could touch her skin, until it wasn't too soon that little beads of water glistened all along her body. Then the drops started to hit her ears. Each time it collided, the ear would twitch, sending little sprays of water around her head. When the flicks started to get more frequent, she finally took notice of the weather change.

With a loud screech, Prisca jumped up to her feet, fur bristling in surprise. Only water. Yes. Only water. At least until the water mixed with the earth to become mud. Then it would be a mess. A giant mess. Was there a tree nearby? Or a cave? Or just somewhere in general to hide away until this horrid experience was over?

Ah, if only she'd been woven with wings. She could have simply taken off to the skies. Perhaps found a large tree with a thick enough branch to support her like a bird until the rain stopped. But she wasn't. So walking she must do. Maybe in that direction. There seemed to be a cloud of branches rustling in the wind in the distance.

Almost tiptoeing, the nantlil made her slow progress over towards the tree, hoping for some protection under the leafs.

She found something extra. A pale cub was curled up in much the same manner as she was beside the trunk, her shoulders shaking every now and than in what Prisca didn't think was the cold. A quick survey didn't show her any other B'alam nearby. How cruel to leave a little youngster by itself.

"Uh...Are you all alone?" the older nantlil asked awkwardly, suddenly feeling aware of a nervousness creeping along her body at this strange discovery. Not a pleasant discovery.

Penny was indeed all alone. She hadn't been long in this world before everything had begun to crumble around her. A little voice in her head had instructed her on how to make a kill when she got hungry. But try as she might, she couldn't manage to do it. It wasn't the killing that made it impossible to score a meal. She kept failing and failing. Maybe her prey was too large for her little body to handle, but it was only a couple of rabbits! However, with each failure came feelings of in-adequateness. Which caused dark feelings to enter her thoughts until she was almost expecting herself to fail. So she did. She should be able to do this, right? Why else was she woven so small if she couldn't do this. Unless this was some high power's idea of a joke! In which case, it wasn't funny! Not at all.

Then there was the rain. This wet feeling was bad enough. Until the loud noises came. Those loud noises right over head that felt like something large was going to strike her from above. Then that horrid flash of light, that illuminated the entire world around her for a split second. It was just unnatural, is what it was! And scary...And there was no where to shelter herself from it, except this one tree. She didn't dare go any further. Who knew what else was out there, waiting for her. Hiding in the shadows. Waiting to pounce.

The little white cub buried her face in her fur until it would be all over. It couldn't go on forever. The world would flood.

When a voice reached out from the darkness, Penny didn't stir at first. Thinking it some trick of the rain or loud noise. Trying to tempt her out with a sense of security. That's what it wanted, right? It wanted her out so it could gobble her up! But then the voice came again, along with a little tabbing on her neck. A gentle pushing. Penny slowly opened one eye and found the larger paws of someone else standing near her. All at once, without thinking, the cub launched herself forward, using the body of the other B'alam to block the sky's view of her as she clung to one of the stranger's forelegs.

Someone had come to rescue her from this nightmare!

Well, that wasn't what she was expecting. Prisca had expected more fear, shyness at best. But not to be tackled by a tiny version of her own species. This made the awkward feeling in her body stronger. What did she do! She had no experience with youngsters! And, she was realizing, no interest in having experience! Oh, damn her apparently kind nature that wouldn't let her just continuing on alone. Now she was stuck. And there was no one around. Not even that awful tahtll! Or, maybe that was a good thing. What would this cub be to him, anyway? A meal, perhaps. He might even take it all, she was so small.

Reaching out with a paw, the Light nantlil patted the cub gently on her back, murmuring "There, there" as she did so. That's what one did, right? Comfort the young when they were scared? Or something...Why wasn't that strange sensation in her head telling her how to hunt also showing her how to deal with this situation? Was one just supposed to wing it when they met strange, all alone cubs in the rain?

And why wasn't there anyone with this one?

"I guess you....Do not have anywhere to go, mm?"

Please? Anyone?

Penny never noticed the other B'alam's awkwardness. Even with someone larger and unafraid with her, she still didn't like the thunder. Or the way the world lite up so bright during the flashes right after. Or the feeling of wet fur sticking to her skin. Made her feel heavy. In the darkness and the noise, she had barely gotten a look at her protector. All she could figure out was it was a nantlil like her. And much larger. So large, the rain drops no longer hit her as she crouched under the other's stomach.

"N-No," the cub answered, opening one eye to stare at the backs of white legs. White legs covered with something that didn't look like fur. That sparked her curiosity, but a thunder clap came overhead and she ducked her face back into the white fur of the adult's hind legs. Why wouldn't the rain and noise just stop!

"I woke by myself." And this was her first time seeing another of her own kind. What a time to be introduced to your own species.

Of course she did. It would just be Prisca's luck to find the cub that's all by herself. It should be against nature to weave one by themselves.

Looking around her, she let out another sigh at her rotten luck. There was nothing but this tree and a scattering of bushes all around them. Nowhere to hide from the rain. Nowhere with enough shelter, anyway. No matter where they went, they will remain wet until it stopped. Which hopefully wouldn't be long now. She wasn't sure how long ago it had started. Without the sun, it was difficult to judge the time of day.

"Follow me," she told the little one, moving in the direction of a bush. The cub let go of the adult's legs, but stayed still too close to move very quickly. She clearly didn't want to deal with the rain anymore, either. Quickly growing annoyed, Prisca bent down and grabbed the cub by the scruff of her neck. Penny let out a surprised cry, but soon quieted down as Prisca moved more swiftly towards the bush in her line of sight. With youngster still in her mouth, she ducked down below the branches into the middle of the bush, laying down and placing the cub back near her stomach, where she snuggled into the soft white fur of the adult B'alam, her face completely buried. There they stayed in silence until the last few drops of rain were long since settled on the ground.
