It had been some time since Chance had been to the Haunted House. He'd been sent away on a mission to one of the remote bases just before Christmas and had gotten all of three days to spend back at headquarters (three days he'd spent obnoxiously spoiling Otto just because he could) before being shipped back to finish what he'd started. And before then, he'd been doing his duties around Deus, as well as training, and the Haunted House had been far from his mind.
Now, however, it was back - and although he'd not brought the manacle of pain with him, as per a certain someone's request, Chance rather wished he had. He'd been considering whether or not the time limit for which one was hypersensitive to pain could be shortened in some manner, but the manacle was currently tucked away in a drawer.
He did, at least, have the mysterious notebook he'd found stuck in a satchel that hung around his waist, and now Chance prowled the halls of the House, his bow at the ready, fingers on the wire.
There was nothing yet, but he figured that the silence would not last.

The limited lights in the hallways flickered, as if they were fragile flames in the wind. The darkness that plagued the house felt thicker, and suffocating like breathing in water. A faint moaning was heard, in and out of audible range. One step, one movement, and it seemed to block the noise out entirely. Even breathing might drown it out.
However, soon it became a little clearer. Then a little more..
From the darkness ahead of Chance, a white figure slowly emerged. The sound of something dragging behind her could be heard but not seen. Hair. Long, long hair covered her face and fell to the floor. It was thick with debris, and tangled beyond repair. The ghost's skin was dark and murky. Her eyes could barely be seen. That is until she slowly lifted her head. Hair fell away from her face, revealing large and glowing irises; her sclera black as night.
There was dead silence.
And there there was her scream. The scream of a banshee is said to scare some into an early grave. This one seemed to shatter glass surrounding the pair, and ring too terribly into the eardrums of the one human present.

The lights flickering made Chance glance upwards, brows rising as he scanned the ceiling.
"That can't be good," he said, and inside of his head, Asher made a soft sound that was akin to laughter, sifting through his thoughts. The demon coiled coolly, and Chance's fingers tightened on the bowstring, eyes narrowing, a sense of apprehension welling in his stomach.
It felt thick and cloying. Chance took another few steps forward, squinting through the dark, and saw something - a flash of a face, gaunt and hollow, of tangled hair, twisted and matted, of black, fathomless eyes with a burning glow in the middle -
And the scream -
"Holy ******** s**t - "
Chance gave a yell of surprise and staggered back as unpleasant shivers cascaded down his spine. His fingers, which had been tensed around the bowstring, released it abruptly, and the arrow shot forward with a sharp snap and a twang, whistling through the air towards the creature.

He wanted to clap his hands over his ears, but considering that he needed both hands in order to shoot, it seemed ill advised. The shrieking sound emanating from the creature shivered and tingled down his body unpleasantly, a chill in his bones, and Chance winced.
She blinked out of view, and he took a moment to drag a breath in, wondering if she'd gone. But then, a split second later, she was back, and the screaming was back, her hand sweeping out. Chance felt sharp stings across his face and let out a shout of pain, the close proximity preventing him from loading another arrow.
But that was what the blades were for.
"OW <******** - get away - "
He swung the weapon sideways, trying to fling her off of him.

He tasted blood and it made him nauseated, his aversion to it still prominent; her nails had cut his lower lip, scratched lines across his cheek. Chance wiped his mouth on the back of his slightly shaking hand and shook his head as though to clear it, taking several hasty steps backwards as Asher thrummed reassuringly in his mind.
"Okay, princess," he said. "I'm not liking this whole shrieking thing, so could you maybe do something else - "
She'd stepped backwards, disappeared again, and reappeared, and Chance staggered forward at her shove, a hiss escaping between clenched teeth. His fingers gripped the bow, and Chance pivoted sharply, swinging the weapon in a wide arc towards her midsection.
"Ow - really, you've gotta stop that - "

He felt annoyingly unsettled by the fact that he was unsettled. The creature's voice was shivering through him like fingernails across a chalkboard, the taste of blood in his mouth making his stomach clench unpleasantly. Even just her way of speaking made Chance wary.
Had he managed to hit her? She was swaying now, looking lost, and Chance took a step back, his eyes narrowed.
{ careful - } Asher warned, but it was too late.
He had never been afraid of the dark, but her eyes were like two stars bursting into being, twisting and mutilating the precious imagery that Chance had of them. A mocking rendition of his beloved stars, laughing at him in the chill air, settling into his very bones. His own eyes widened, mouth opening, and then hands were wrapping around his neck, scraping and squeezing, and Chance's gasp of surprise was half-strangled and rasping.
Instinctively his hands flew to his throat, grappling at hers as the bow dissipated, Chance struggling to pull her off.

The human's neck was soft and warm. Almost hot. It thrummed with movement and constant activity as she squeezed it between her hands. She could scarcely make out his facial expression in the darkness. Only some of his eyes thanks to her own ghoulish glow.
Maybe if she hurt him well, then he'd learn to be nicer. He'd remember her, and leave. Leave her home. Teach him a lesson. She would teach that lesson hard and dig it into his Hunter flesh.
Hunters were bad. They blew up islands and made her friends scared. Hunters were monsters. Killers.
He struggled back, grasping at her arms. Spooked by his fighting back, she shrieked and recoiled from him. She held her arms with her hands, rubbing out the imaginary goosebumps. The lights were valiantly trying to flicker back to life, now that Siobhan's chilling aura was weakened by her startled state. However, their glow was much too dim and too weak. They buzzed and faded out once again, and all that remained was Siobhan's eyes eerily glowing. Wide and staring straight at Chance.
Where were the teachers? Where? Why was this hallway so endless?
Her glow vanished as she turned to flee.
Chance would hear the pitter patter of her footsteps only for a moment. Silence grew stale and unnerving. Little would he know, the hallway had turned Siobhan back around. This time, she was gliding above the ground; floating instead of using her feet. She flew full force, believing she was making great distance between herself and Chance. However...
All Chance would see is the sudden return of her glowing eyes suddenly careening straight at him; her ghastly wail piercing his ears as she nearly barrelled into him.

He couldn't breathe; the creature's hands were sinking into his neck, nails digging in, and Chance was reminded suddenly, cruelly, of a rabid, unknowing Otto doing the same thing on the beach all those months ago. He hadn't blamed him, would never blame him, but the feeling was similar: his throat constricting, ragged half-breaths escaping but not inhaling.
And then she was gone. Chance's lungs heaved for air, the sudden rush of it into his chest making him gasp and choke. He staggered back, a hand rising to massage his bruised throat, and heard Asher thrumming in his head, black spots dancing in his line of vision.
Good ******** grief.
{ are you all right }
I will be.
Chance straightened, wincing, hearing the soft tread of footsteps before they dissipated. The blackness pressed down upon him, suffocating and thick, and then her eyes appeared once more, the same mocking rendition of stars in the dark.
He felt a chill run down his spine - and then she came, her shoulder slamming into him, a terrible shriek splitting the silence. Chance staggered and hit the wall, a yell escaping, and kicked out with one of his legs, trying to force her ********> hell - "

That insensitivity to pain would come in real handy right now, Chance thought grimly as he winced, the creature's shrieks echoing throughout the dimly lit corridor. He clamped a hand over his ear and resummoned the bow, grasping it tightly.
{ and then you would be reminded forcefully of the reason why that manacle is currently locked away } said Asher reproachfully.
Chance disregarded this with a fleeting, tight smile, and strung an arrow, sliding several steps back to take aim.
"Sorry, princess, but I'm not a huge fan of your singing, I've gotta say."

He'd managed a clean shot, surprisingly. Chance let out a satisfied sound, lips curving up in a twisted smile - but her scream made it disappear immediately. His shout of pain mingled with the awful, gut-wrenching shrieks, Chance's head spinning, dizziness making him stagger.
He was dimly aware of Asher yelling, then nothing but pain as the creature slammed into him. Chance crashed to the ground, and agony ripped up his chest, clawed fingers digging into his skin, noise exploding in his ears. His back arched, body spasming, and Chance felt the bow dissipate once more, useless at this ********> he screamed, voice ragged, and kicked upwards viciously, wildly, trying to buck her off of him.
