It was hot, uncomfortably so as Junko began to stir for the very first time. Her ears were the first part to move as they instinctually directed themselves towards even the slightest of sounds, and following shortly was the parting of the red curtain shielding her eyes from the glaring sun above. The light stung, it made her recoil quickly and drop one of her paws over her nose to hide them. “Ouch…” She breathed in a voice so delicate it seemed to be made of frail crystal. What was this place? Where was she? With more consciousness came more awareness and she remembered hearing the sound of a breath before finding herself lying there. She was here because someone placed her here, but who?
After a few more attempts at looking at the world her eyes were finally able to adjust and she began to look around. Her head was resting on what looked to be partially dried out grass, and she was out in the middle of nowhere with not even a tree in sight under which to take refuge from the blistering heat. Her head swiveled this way and that until her range of motion had reached its limits, at which point she slowly brought herself to all fours. “H-hello?” She called out feebly. When the only answer she was met with was the gentle whistling of a breeze she began to walk. She hadn’t any idea where she was going, but she knew she needed to move.
As she went she began to feel her chest tightening and her heartbeat quicken, there was also an uncomfortable twisting sensation in her gut. She was…afraid. Her steps began to become more erratic as a small measure of panic took hold. There was nothing around her but flat land as far as the eye could see. Was she alone in this place? Would she be left to wander this desolate landscape by herself for eternity? She began to run blindly forward without paying attention to things such as direction or her quickly waning energy. “Help!” She cried, her voice barely loud enough to send an echo out.
Despite the feeling of a calming presence attempting to comfort her she pushed it to the back of her mind and kept running. Even the gentle echo of a soft voice in the back of her mind was immediately ignored as she gave in to the terror that had blanketed her. “Please help me!” She called, her voice even weaker than before due to the tears currently streaming down her cheeks.
Her flight finally ended when her breathing became too ragged for her to run, and the tears too strong for her to see through anymore. As her golden gaze fell to the ground beneath her paws she noticed her legs were trembling, her whole body was trembling in fact. She was terrified, and there was no one here to help her. Just as she felt hopelessness beginning to overwhelm her something glinted in the sun and caught her eye. It wasn’t something in the distance, it was something hanging about her neck.
Sitting back on her haunches she lifted a paw to her chest and began to look at what appeared to be a jewel sitting atop a knot made of gold. Someone had given this to her, someone who cared about her. As her eyes began to focus more directly on the soft color of the gem, and of the intricacy of the knot her breathing began to return to normal. The voice she had been ignoring cooed at her though she could not make out any words, she just had the sensation that it was telling her all would be well and that if she kept going she would find exactly what she needed.
She did not know how long she had been walking or how far she had gone, but the gentle presence she had felt when looking at the necklace had not left her. Only that presence kept her moving forward, guiding her to someplace she had no knowledge of. Even though panic had not taken hold again she still felt quite afraid, a little more so now that her mouth had begun to dry out. Her nose became cracked and her tongue thick in her mouth. Would she die? At that question she felt as though the presence guiding her had shaken its head. “No.” She said softly.
Eventually some trees came into view and she noticed a different smell on the air, a damp smell. Her mind, sluggish until this point, sparked and she once more began to run only this time it was out of excitement rather than fear. Water. She didn’t know how she knew, but she did. There was water nearby and she would find it.
When at last she came to the banks of what looked to be a large lake she did a little jig of joy. Whoever had given her that precious necklace had guided her here, they had wanted her to survive. They had come to her in her hour of need. With a large smile and a full heart she lowered her head until her lips touched the water, at which point she drank long and deep of the cool liquid. She was safe now.
