▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯ ̸ ̸ Concept⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯

A group of isolated B'alam on one of the islands located on the world map. They survive believing in Spirits that overlook the world and watch as it grows. The spirits are everywhere and everything, a piece of them is even embedded in each B'alam that awakens. Those on the island are ignorant to the rest of the world and truly believe they are the only B'alam within existence. Everything they see and encounter is without a magus to guide them. They are forging their own society.

⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯ ̸ ̸ Colony Basics⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯

The Colony is good natured. They believe in a variety of invisible “Spirits” whose forms and gifts make up the very fabric of the world. The colony as a whole strives to please the spirits and maintain peace in while they thrive.

Spirits are generally considered to be embodiment's of a certain element in the B’alam world. To the Kisiwani these are invisible God-like entities who watch over and observe the world as it grows and changes. Though as great and powerful as they are most Spirits lack the ability to condense themselves into a singular form. The exception to this are B’alam themselves whose souls are brought into being by Yomshayeli, attached to a physical form capable of interacting with the world they inhabit.

Spirits are divided into Greater and Lesser categories. Greater spirits generally hold more influence over the world as a whole, while lesser spirits are more specialized in what they control.

The Spirits mainly serve to explain natural phenomenons that occur, as the Kisiwani have no magus to explain to them the basics of the world.
Yomshayeli is their chief spirit because it is the ‘breath of life’. Instead of referring to it as a mere spirit they’ll refer to Yomshayeli as the “Creator”.

Spirit names and Titles are usually a combination of Swahili and Zulu words and nouns.

⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯ ̸ ̸ Misc. ⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯

┈• Pelts can be any color. Nobody will be judged for having a certain color on them or pattern, though tropical themed B'alam is highly preferred.
┈• The only tribe who cannot join is the ice tribe, as it is too hot for them to survive on the island. All other tribes can potentially awaken on the island.
┈• Outsiders will not be able to join at this time, but if you have a blank slate/non rp'd character you can have them awaken on the island, thus joining by that means.
┈• It is not required but RP for an awakening B'alam being recruited will be encouraged.

⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯ ̸ ̸ Founding Story. ⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
The b'alam living here see only their island and a vast sea of ocean before them. In the distance lays a collection of small islands but it is quite the swim to reach them and certainly not one that the 'divine spirit' can make.

The divine spirit in a word is the first of the b'alam to awaken on the island. Always she knew others existed but for many moons she lived alone without company. Her desire to see the others in the world could not be achieved, for swimming away was an impossible feat. So she had to make due and survive on her island alone.

That was until another awoke within her forest. She had never encountered another but she somehow knew that it was of her kind. Approaching the other she spoke for the first time, a skills she knew not she possessed. In communicating with the other they soon became friends, and the lonely divine spirit had someone to talk to.

Soon, more and more began to awaken on the island. The divine spirit and her divine follower would find and take these b'alam back to the center of the island, where they would ask many questions of the world around them.

Being the first, and the one to exist the longest on her own the divine spirit was considered wisest. Someone was beyond the water, but who? They needed to know.

That, that was where everything began. For the "Divine Spirit" told a story no one could forget...

"What we know is that another, no, many others, they exist beyond our home. So the question my children is not 'who lay beyond here?' it is 'why are we here to begin with? Who put us on this place where we cannot venture beyond?' The answer, my children, is the Inyoka (Serpent). It who lives in the blue. You see the Inyoka is the blue itself, it is the ripple of water, the rain as it falls from the stars, the change in which way the tide recedes and comes upon our island beaches. The Inyoka is the water and everything involving such.

"The water- the Inyoka is a giver of good things, but does not know boundaries. The Inyoka feeds our mouths with water and fish but does not understand that we cannot all cross it. For you see my children, the Inyoka is very bad at hearing." The Divine one waited to hear the satisfying sound of laughter from her audience before continuing.

"Now you will probably ask me, 'Yet who would create the Inyoka then?' and this is a fair question deserving of fair answers. The creator of the Inyoka is called the Yomshayeli (Caller). The Yomshayeli is the wind, the warm air and the cool air, the breath of which we breathe as we awake for the first of days and the whispers we hear when no one is around to whisper anything at all. The Yomshayeli is wind and breath alike, the creator of all things which begins."

"Now the Yomshayeli after it finished creating the Inyoka set about to throw living things into our world. These are creatures who live in the water that Inyoka created."

"However, when the Yomshayeli began to create more solid creatures, things like birds and things like turtles, it noticed that they were not very happy. The birds did not swim and the turtles wished a place to rest. Seeing them suffer the Yomshayeli created another spirit to complete the world. This spirit was known as Dunia (Earth)."

"Now, the Dunia my children is where we walk now. For the Dunia is the soil and the rocks and the sand. The Dunia exists where our feet touch solid ground, as the Dunia is meant to create stability in our world. Yet children be warned the Dunia is not a simple spirit. If one should make the Dunia angry the world will shake and sink under our feet." The Divine one picked a piece of tree bark off the ground, and snapped it in half as if to say "This could be our island."

"The Dunia, the Yomshayeli and the Inyoka are great forces. Great Spirits. They are the world and everything of it, and we each exist with a Muhuri- a piece of these creators in ourselves. Yet now I tell you as well my children, the great spirits are not alone The Dunia, the Yomshayeli and the Inyoka... A great many others also exist, we simply were not told the names of them, for we must find and name them ourselves."

"We exist in harmony with these spirits and the spirits of other creatures within our world. It is a job, our role, our destiny to survive. Though beyond that I cannot say my children. I do not see what will happen once we flourish, but I imagine it will be something great..."

In Theory... B'alam are born knowing something is bigger then them and this something gave them life. Without the ability to search out a magus, aka, leave their awakening spot, then they are left to assume what the grand creator was. This clan has decided that the world was created by the will of three spirits whose genders are not certain. That these spirits are as alive as you or I but they do not live quite the same way we do.

Muhuri
Seals, bindings. The Muhuri is a bondage, a tie to a greater or lesser spirit. The Spirits, as vast and powerful as they are cannot condense their physical selves into a small enough form to appear as a living body. They cannot interact with B’alam- their children, directly. Therefore each B’alam is thought to be woven with a tie to a specific spirit, called a Muhuri, which manifests as a physical feature meant to both distinguish and aid b’alam as they grow.

As the earth tribe have no main features or markings that set them apart from other tribes (except for maybe the absence of these features) they will be considered to be Kutafuta (seeking) for a spirit to tie themselves to. On one hand this is almost a liberating title. They will be thought untethered to any spirit, able to seek out anyone they choose! On the other hand it is thought to be degrading to be woven unworthy enough to have a spirit to serve. Earth b’alam with secondary features (like ice tribe fangs or wind streamers) are exempt from this rule as these features are thought to be gifts from lesser spirits.

Due to their lack of a visible 'gift from the spirits' Earth b’alam will receiving conflicting views by the colony as it grows.

When Magus Awakenings begin to occur the Muhuri are considered to be the thing awakened during the process. Muhuri’s are ‘upgraded’ to allow a b’alam a greater tie closer to their parent-spirit. B’alam wise enough to have an Awakened Muhuri are looked at with awe, and often referred to with a prefixed title Roho. (e.g "Roho Tsisia, how are you today?")

Banishment

Muhuri’s are possible to damage and even break beyond repair. Going against tribe word, announcing one does not believe in the spirits or actively harassing members of the clan are reasons to speculate someone has broken their Muhuri Seal.

Those with broken ties to the spirits are looked at as pitiful, magicless beings who are blind to the world. They are still b’alam at the end of the day, but as they are incapable of understanding and properly using the Spirit’s magic they are thought unfavored, disliked by the Gods. They tend to be avoided on account of them thought to bring bad luck and are rumored to be dangerous.

Banished b’alam are exiles. They are not allowed to walk in the colony territory and if they do so they will either be taken as prisoners or ignored by the community as a whole. As a result most banished b'alam take to the sea by constructing rafts and attempting to float to another island or mainland. Or they simply hide out in unclaimed island territory.

Birth and Death
Death is considered to be bittersweet ascension. B’alam’s physical forms are lost but in return they walk among the spirits freely. They lose the ability to speak with loved ones directly, but they can commune with their spirit-parents. Most importantly they perhaps become one of the many elements of the b’alam world. If a nature spirit was considered parent to a deceased b’alam others may think certain plants or bugs are the direct work of this deceased b’alam’s spirit touching the world they exist in. For the colony nobody truly dies, they simply move on to become apart of something greater.

The Spirit Book
For the time being, all knowledge about the spirits is passed down through word of mouth. Below are spirits the tribe knows of and will speak of frequently to make sure their discovery is never forgotten.

Patron Greater Spirits
"The ones who are superior to all the others. The ones whom we revere the most of all. The ones who built the world."

Yomshayeli is the spirit of the air, life, beginnings, confessions, purity and ascension. Patron of “Sky Born” and “Winged Ones”. Chief of the spirits.
Those who are drawn to the air, the call of the wind, who look to the sky for their guidance shall see Yomshayeli's very soul as they gaze.
Priests, Council, Magic Researchers, Librarians

Dunia is the spirit of the earth, weakness, durability, contradictions, love and natural disasters. Patron to the “Lost Ones”
No official job falls under the Dunia’s watch but miscellaneous tasks and jobs are thought to be aided with the Dunia’s help.

Inyoka is the spirit of the sea, the disabled (primarily the deaf), chaos, temptation, storms, conflict and providence. Patron of the “Orb Carriers” and “Truth Holders”
Those who are willing to undertake the challenge, who are brave enough, smart enough and strong enough will find the truth. Those who hide in the shadow of deceit and those cheat their way to victory will be lost in the Inyoka’s waters.
Fishers, divers, singers, dancers, forgers and merchants fall under the Inyoka’s watch.

Tunaonausiku is the spirit of the night, silence, animals, dedication, knowledge and hunting. Patron of the “Fanged Ones” and “Swift Shadowmen”
They who run with the night, who move like ghosts and strike with the bite of a snake. The ones with talent, the ones who use this talent. The ones with potential, find their home in Tunaona’s eyes.
Assassin's, secret-gatherers, hunters, warriors, apothecaries and doctors all find acceptance in the shadow-spirit.

Jotokuwamoto is the spirit of heat, ambition, rivalry, relationships, emotion, change, control and discovery. Patron to the “Horned-Heads” and “Passionate Ones”
They feel, they breathe just as you and I. However these emotions and feelings are amplified with the Jotojuwamoto’s gift.
Inventors, Constructors, Forgers, Competitions and their monitors, Seekers/Explorers, recruiters and Keepers for the banished.

Mchanadaima is the spirit of daytime, light, sight, acceptance, spiritual awakening and peace. Patron of the “Scaled-backs” and “Sight Seekers”
Peace is what they are after and peace is what they will achieve. The Sight Seekers naturally mean well, they are good by default. In Mchanadaima they embrace the idea of acceptance, unity.
Psychiatrists, Gardeners, Gatherers, Ambassadors, Contractors, Bankers, Generally anything that involves keeping balance or laws.

Greater Spirits
“They who rule over broad things. The things that change the universe as a whole. The ones who monitor the very balance of our world with their powers.”

Only the patron Great Spirits are known at this time.

Lesser Spirits
“The ones with a more delicate touch. The Ones with power to influence our day to day lives. They are more specific in their powers and changes.”

Kisiwani / B’alam - A collection of Children-Spirits breathed into existence by Yomshayeli and the other Spirit-gods. Their souls are given a physical body so that they may better learn and interact with the world the Spirits created. B’alam see themselves specifically as the Spirits of Individuality, Interaction, Free Will and Magic Manipulation. When these Spirits physical bodies expire their souls ascend to a higher plane of existence. One where they returned to their parent-spirits who allow them to influence a small part of the known world that is under their control.

Roles in the Colony
Majorly under construction but here are the basics:

Roles are grouped into three subsections; each considered just as important as the last. They serve to balance each other out and bring a sense of stability to the world. While some roles bleed into multiple sections the system is generally to make sense of who reports to who rather than what the duties actually entail…

Magically Inclined
These roles are highest of importance Spiritually to the tribe. The colony bases its foundation of belief in their various spirits. Roles who are dedicated to preserving such are well thought of in their eyes.

Physically Challenging
A higher sense of oneself and where they stand in the big universal picture is fine and dandy, but it doesn't do much to actually feed people. Physical roles are the solution in this. They’re looked at as necessary tasks and demands the spirits impose on B’alam so that they may learn more as they survive.

Mentally Draining
Things that just itch at the mind and demanded to be solved are mentally stressing tasks and roles. The spirits felt it fit to give the b’alam free will, and with it, the ability to think. To create problems and then solve then just as fast. Mental tasks like the creation of a written language falls in the category of a Mental problem. Along with those who study others and those who invent contraptions and inventions this category is for those with a more creative side to their lives.

👑 - Indicates they are at the top of their career

Spiritual Roles

The Council are Voices (called “Speakers/Shouters” in this role) whose primary purpose is to act as public speakers, advocates for each of the Patron Great Spirits. This role is considered one of the highest ranks attainable in the clan and is one of the most well-respected.
⚫ The Spirit council act as leaders for each district under their control. They are permitted to impose rules and laws for their citizens and rule largely independently for the most part. However any major changes must be brought up in the regular weekly meetings the Shouters take part in.
⚫ While in the beginning the Council will consider all of its member equals Yomshayeli’s Speaker will be considered the unofficial leader of the group. As the colony ages different Speakers may come to have a more pronounced titles and be widespread recognized as above the other five.
It is possible for b’alam of the same tribe to be council members for two different spirits but generally Shouts tend to be of the ‘favored tribe’ their spirit rules over.
⚫ Lesser or Greater Spirits of higher importance in the clan may eventually find themselves able to choose a district area on the island and select a Shout to be acting will for their spirit.

Divine Voices- Serving directly under the Council, the Voices are b’alam who train themselves to interpret the will of a particular spirit, or group of spirits. Think of them as advanced professors. They expand the tribe’s overall knowledge about the spirits by researching a specific one.
⚫ The best way to think of Voices is as magic researchers. Their whole job revolves around the discovery of specific tribe’s magic and element they’re based after. They’ll perform tests to see how magic works and how certain b’alam are affected by different situations.
⚫ Working alongside healers Voices serve as pseudo-doctors for the tribe they base their research in.
⚫ Voices may have a following of Whispers under them who are interested in their particular spirit they study.

Divine Whispers - While not all spirits require a dedicated member to ensure they are well known, some are easily forgotten among the large number there are. The Divine Whispers act as Teacher/Shaman-like characters among the tribe who ensure the growing number of spirits are remembered and it is well known which spirit is attributed to what.
⚫ B’alam in this role will be expected to learn about each of the Spirits so that they may share this information with others.
⚫ They’re also to be well informed on the tribe’s history and anything the spirits may have influenced.
⚫ They are basically a combination of Priests and lorekeepers the society has.

Divine Whispers -> Divine Voices -> Divine Council👑
Bonesetters -> Disease Banishers -> Shamen

Physical Roles
A vast majority of the tribe jobs and roles are actually under the Physical School of abilities. Therefore they are divided further into several sub-categories to better track how promotions work.

Low-Rank
Gatherers - A simple role for inexperienced b’alam. Gatherers forage throughout the island for knick knacks and edible berries to be used in a variety of ways.
Recruiters - The island is always in need of new members to help aid them. As B’alam cannot leave the island, Recruiters simply go on patrols around the island territory in search of newly Awakened B’alam.
Apprentices - An incredibly broad role Apprentices can serve under Forgers, Whispers, Inventors, Constructors, Merchants or Entertainers.

Medium rank
Merchants - Sellers and barterers of material goods.
Hunters - A gatherer who has determined they’re better at taking down prey then fetching berries. Hunters help ensure the colony never go hungry, and that the island is never over or underpopulated with food supply.
Gardeners - A Gatherer who sees the use in planting may eventually request to have a small patch of land for their own personal garden. From these hobby farmers come plants and produce of all kinds sold to merchants and then again to the general population.
Fishers - While a hunter finds skill on land a Fisher has the ability to catch food from the sea.
Forgers
Inventors
Builders/Constructors
Entertainers (strength track)
Entertainers (charisma track)

High-Mid
Warriors
Apothecaries [might change to spiritual]
Divers

High
Assassin
High Guard/Peacekeepers
Banished Monitors
Advanced Divers
Shadow Walker

Mental Roles

Secret-Gatherers (Spies) -> [Physical Rank: Assassin]
Book Tender -> Librarian -> [Spiritual Rank: Divine Whisper]
-> Time-trackers 👑
-> Stone carver -> Translator -> [Spiritual Rank: Divine Whisper]
Counters -> [Future Role: Treasurer/Bankers 👑]

Transition Roles
Part but not-quite-part of the colony roles.

Kutafuta - B’alam seeking to find a Spirit to whom they’ll pledge themselves to. Generally looked at as both odd and curious for having been woven with no Muhuri.
Promotion: Any Low-ranking role

Celebrations/Events - this is still heavily u/c

The Night of Spirits "For they who watch us, deserve something in return."
- A night of dancing, singing and celebration. A night for the spirits to come alive and celebrate with their creations. The focus of the event usually is based around the reverence of certain spirits and the idea that through celebration they are showing the spirits how thankful they are to be alive, to spend each day learning more and more of their world. Chosen Listeners and Storyweavers are dressed to look like the living embodiment of a specific spirit they are representing for the night and call to the spirit within them by preforming a sacred dance. Carved creations are lit on fire and tossed into a giant bonfire that burns throughout the celebration. These creations contain wishes, desires, hopes and dreams that are whispered into them before being burned and sent up in flames, travelling to the spirits themselves. As the night wanes on and into first light the celebration begins to calm and the dancing and singing will cease. First light is a sign that the Night of The Spirits has ended and it is followed by a day of resting before returning to regular duties within the colony.

The Days Of Fishing "The Inyoka has blessed us my children, let us take advantage of this."
When whales near the coast are migrating they end up pushing fish to travel closer to the island than usual, the result is more fish are able to be found than they are caught by the fishermen over the course of a few days. During these days the tribe celebrates the mass bounty of food by all participating in a great catching spree. Those who are bad at swimming or scared to enter water stay on shore skinning and preparing the fish to be eaten, some being dried out and stored away for later months, others being served on the spot!

The fish catching itself is usually turned into something of a game. If members catch certain amount of fish or catch fish a certain way they are crowned winners, and given prizes such as cloaks and capes to wear. After the few days of laboring away, catching fish in the water and playing games as they do so the clan will have collected more than enough fish for a few months, which leaves them with the rest of the fish to get rid of. In order to get rid of the excess amount of fish caught the clan will offer up a majority of the excess food to the spirits at the eye of the island, decorated like a shrine. The only ones allowed to eat the offered food are the Divine Spirit, Divine Follower, Lead Scholar, Warlord and Listeners. After the fish caught begins to drop back down to normal numbers, daily tasks and roles gradually are resumed in the colony until life goes on as it normal does.

Binding of the souls "When we are together, our souls of the Nantlil and our souls of the Tahtll we can feel ourselves in being complete. My children, the Great Spirits sing in praise of this moment."

When A Nantlil and a Tahtll bind spirits in marriage it is thought of as a special occasion. Dismissed from the regular duties they have the newly formed pair and their families are given the day to celebrate the union in any way they see fit. After celebrating, the couple will head to the eye of the island. Here they are tied together, by a long scarf that wraps around reach of their paws. In unity they offer one another a piece of their spirit, usually in the form of a trinket that has been blessed by a shaman, or a piece of their fur. The trinkets are then given to the Divine Spirit who burns them in a fire. The purpose of burning them is thought that, if the fire melts the object has been taken by Yomshayeli, who approves of the union. If the objects don't melt then Yomshayeli does not approve and the ceremony ends. However if they melt then when the fire dies and the objects are nothing more than ashes, they are collected and placed in small pouches that can be worn as necklaces. The pouches are often not worn, instead stored away in a place of safekeeping, as they offer physical proof of the marriage.

The couple may choose to have artisans craft them something more stable such as rings or necklaces to serve as proof of the union to wear on a day-to-day basis but traditionally pouches are what is offered to the new couple.

A three day time frame is given as a "honeymoon period" where the new couple are excused from their work and given time to enjoy themselves together as one.

The island is divided into six Districts or cities that make up a majority of the island. The Districts will be chosen by the Council Members who view them as an area rich with the spoils of their particular Patron Spirit.

      Maisha - The Life District
      Ardhi - The Ground District
      Bahari - The Sea District
      Usiku - The Night District
      Kuungua - The Burning District
      Mwanga - The Light District

      Want to join?
That's great! Feel free to toss your b'alam in this concept to help breathe some life into it! However keep in mind that these b'alam will awaken on the island and will not know of important things like the Arch Maji exist. As far as they know everything they're told by "the divine spirit" and the founding trio is all they know.
