Tired. Very tired. A yawn broke the silence as the pale-colored female stretched, her back arching to awaken all the worn out muscles that cried to go back to sleep. Sophia was tempted to listen to them, but relented as she dragged herself from the thick sleeping furs that crossed the chilled stone floor. As she stood, she stretched out her wings, wiggling out the membranes until they were taut like the skin of a tent. She shook them one good time, before folding them to her side. Now that her body was awake, so was her mind. She pushed aside the fur that provided privacy from the hallways. She could already hear the laughter of cubs in the garden, and the fleeting noise of other B'alam going about the morning routines. It was the usual sounds - calming to Sophia, who had come to create such a place.

Sophia smiled and padded her way quietly down the the stone steps and into the garden. Around her, ornamental flowers and trees stood like glowing spectres in the darkness. But it was not perfect darkness. The pool in the middle held small pieces of light stones, crystals with their own inner glow, and it made the dark pool look very much like the night sky outside the caverns. Stepping closer to the pool, she leaned her muzzle down and lapped at the clear water. It tasted of earth and minerals, of flowers and ice. It was pure and pristine, and it was how she liked to keep it. Out of every location within the Orphanarium, every member knew the gardens were to be regarded with respect. Even the cubs - with their boisterous energy and foolish antics - knew that there was no rough-housing or churning of earth here unless it was to help the keepers tend to the plants.

Lifting her head, Sophia licked her muzzle and stepped back, letting out a slow breath. It was time to begin the morning and her routines.

Raz's mind was abuzz with restlessness. He'd been working for nearly two days straight, and had finally reached a point at which he felt comfortable taking a pause from his current project. After carefully covering his work with a wide piece of canvas, he grabbed his satchel and headed out of the theatre, paws quiet on the polished wooden floors as he slipped outside. He hadn't a clue what hour it was, only that he needed to get a bit of fresh air, and to stretch his wings. There were other matters on his mind as well; there were more and more new b'alam waking up within the cavern system as each day passed, and someone had been talking about a magnificent garden that had been erected somewhere near the castle. It would be an interesting diversion to go and investigate, Raz decided, as he hurried his pace.

The small number of commoners on the walkways of the subterranean city indicated an early hour, and he wondered if it was past sunset. Hopefully everyone would be waking up soon rather than the opposite, he thought, as he leapt up to scale a tall column of rock before launching himself up and away. The feel of the cool air on the underside of his wings was delicious, and he flapped hard to gain altitude before beginning to circle. He would leave the caves to go out and feed later, if the sun had set...but for the moment, his eyes scanned the terrain below, looking for what he had overheard one of his apprentices describing in a conversation he'd been eavesdropping on. Could a garden really be built beneath the earth? He would find his answer soon enough...

Large and circular, with a glow in the center, just like Vova had said. "Fascinating!" Raz mumbled beneath his breath, and began his descent. After circling down, he made a careful landing in one of the outer rings, and tucked his wings to his sides before proceeding. The sheer amount of foliage was impressive, and Raz found himself immediately charmed by the atmosphere of the place. Hadn't Vova said something about cubs living there? He could hear the sounds of distant laughter, and began to wander about, allowing his curiosity to guide him. Other B'alam had to have dwelled there too, and he was eager to find them. After a few minutes of drifting through the garden, he rounded a corner and came to an abrupt hault.

"Hello?" His voice lifted, breaking the silence. He had finally managed to find the center, and was not disappointed by its radiance. However, he hung back, distracted by the nantlil standing at the edge. One of the place's caretakers, he assumed, as he stepped out from behind the bush he'd rounded. "Good evening!" He added with a touch more confidence, hoping his approach wouldn't startle her. He had come from behind, though it certainly hadn't been on purpose.
