That Rough Skin ability was going to be a problem, but there was a way to compensate for it. Maylene wasn't sure it would work, it was still going to end up resulting in luck, but... "Machoke! Focus Energy!" she ordered. Less hits, but with more damage, would still take its toll on the opposing pokemon, but result in less recoil damage to her own. It was her best shot at trying to take out the opponent in a few hits without constantly bringing her own pokemon's HP down with physical, contact attacks.

Hubble managed to hold his own for a surprising amount of time, thanks to his rough skin ability and typing, which made Maylene wary of attacking and used her own pokemon's power against them. Riley had to switch him out eventually, since he got really low on health, but Zeke was able to finish it off nicely.

Maylene sighed. There was no denying it, she had lost. The girl was definitely tough, but she smiled as she lifted her head, and strode across the battle field once her pokemon were returned. "You definitely came prepared," she remarked, "I can tell you've been training hard. You've earned this!" She handed over the badge and a TM, giving a nod, then a grin. "I'm going to have to go eat a whole table's worth of food after that tiring battle!" she remarked, already hungry just at the thought. She may have lost, but it certainly helped her work up an appetite!

Zeke immediately barreled into Riley when he realized the battle was over, knocking the girl of her feet.. "Oof, Zeke, too heavy, too heavy!" she laughed. She returned him to his ball and stood, dusting herself off.
"Thanks, Maylene. That was a good battle. It definitely helped me get stronger." She took the badge and TM greatfully. Drain Punch seemed like a useful move, maybe she'd teach it to Kuraz or Mochi. "You know, I think I'm gonna need some food too!" Riley laughed.
After the battle, the girl headed for the pokemon center to get her pokemon healed up. While she waited, she retrieved the berries grown in her berry pot and planted them all once again. Once her pokemon were healed she let them all out to feast on some great pokefood. Still, they didn't have time to rest- they set out immediately for Pastoria City.

As opposed to doing his usual scouting the gym leader session that he did when he entered the town he decided to shift his focus this time to the training for the previous cities gym. In Veilstone was a rail system that moved people among the various regions. He considered moving regions to try to take down some of the other regions gyms.
This portion of his journey was focused on gaining power. However he obtained it was not of any particular importance. He just knew that he wanted to make his rise to power as quick as possible.

The Pokemon surrounding this city were of a fairly decent level, and it seemed like they would be a good benchmark for his training for the Gardenia battle. If he could work up the power to challenge this leader as well while he was here that would be an added bonus, securing his victory over Gardenia in the process. The Sinnoh League was proving to be entertaining at the very least. He was curious as to what the league holds.

King wasn't sure which route he would take to obtain his desired power. He knew that the Elite Four was the easiest way to obtain power to shape the world, once he was able to compete there he would be able to hold his own against most trainers. Elite four aside if he became Champion he would be one of the most powerful trainers in the land, that was a goal that wasn't too easily obtained but he felt he was capable of doing so.

Content with the progress his team was making towards his battle with Gardenia he decided it might be best to just focus on growing his roster up a little more before moving ahead too quickly. As impressive as his team was shaping up to be already he knew that he wanted something a little more solid to start under. Once he got rolling he knew he was going to pick up serious speed. He wanted to be sure he was comfortable enough with his Pokemon to do so. At this time, that wasn't the case.
