They're the one and only kind of machine in the shop that I'm great at running!

Today in lab, we had to cut out our first assignment. And since it's the first time that many of us are operating it, our professor had to stand right beside us during the whole process to ensure we didn't screw anything up. So the first couple of guys went and took like 20 minutes each, messing up a lot and asking several questions. Then I got up there, and as our professor was facing away from me and the machine and was chatting with the other students, I just got right to work typing in program commands and setting it up by myself. Next thing he knew, he heard the machine doing the tool change and starting the spindle, and he whipped around and looked at me incredulously and said, "You just did that yourself? Damn, you're good! I don't even need to supervise YOU!" lol
Then he proceeded to leave for a few minutes to grab a drink while I ran my program alone, which he didn't do for anyone else. He apparently has a huge amount of trust in me...already. xD

Oh, and I'm the only woman in my lab section of 10 students. So it's always kind of fun subconsciously rubbing it in their faces that I can run a machine better than them. razz

Yup!

We actually have the same exact machine in this video in our shop, brand-spankin'-new, still unused. Basically everyone in our department is fighting for the rights to de-virgin it. xd

The one we used yesterday was the Victor, a much older and less automated version of the Haas. It still gets the job done, it's just...clunkier. It still has a floppy disc drive that we have to use, haha. But they want to train us on the shitty old machine before we can set our hands on the shiny new $200k machine, which makes sense knowing us. xD

Haha, nice! biggrin

I always love when I end up doing something that others didn't think I would be able to do or underestimated what I'm capable of doing.

I know, right? A couple of weeks ago, I was sitting in the lobby of the engineering building and I heard the screeches of dial-up internet coming from the main office, and I got ridiculously happy because of it. rofl

I kind of want one of those really old command-prompt computers just for the hell of it. My nerd side is fascinated by them and wants to play with the dinosaur technology that I'm too young to have witnessed myself. xD

if you get on one of the schools computers that run Linux and accidentally break the interface you can have one of them. That happened to a few people at my school.
