Prauta Fos!

Welcome to Prauta Fos! We are a band of mercenaries, united by our shared idealization of bravery and shameless indulgence in schadenfreude. We are available for hire—usually for a cut of the profit—to protect merchants from bandits, raiders, and those darn paguba raiders! Enrollment is open for any tribe except Ice Tribe—unless you’re willing to shave your fur off! But for now we’re mostly Earth and Fire, though we hope to bring some Dark and Wind into our fold.

Some call us orcs. We usually call ourselves kagla. Either way, we rock.

History
Has yet to be RPed!

Philosophy:
  • Bravery: this is one of our highest values—and the most important virtue. We respect those who are brave about everything, but the best kind of bravery is the bravery we call kuldablach—conquered fear. No one is complete without having conquered a fear!

  • Respect: this is the glue of our clan: mutual respect for every member from every member. Respect can be earned through actions, not through intent. Being a nice person will not earn you respect. Doing charitable acts will.

  • Camaraderie: it’s a big, scary world out there. We need to know that we can rely on each other. While we believe in individualism in general, when times get tough we require teamwork to get along. Conflicts within our band will not be tolerated, and nor will disloyalty or treachery.

Organization
Leaders: We have four factions within our band, and each has a leader, determined by their seniority and skill. Leaders remain so until they die or step down. The four leaders are the Lothrek (war chief), Lothlaug (healer chief), Lothjarn (spirit chief), and Lothlati (chief judge). The leaders discuss and decide important matters amongst themselves. Should no agreement be made, the matter goes to the Kragraik—the tiebreaker. He—or she—is a member of our clan who is well-respected for their good sense, fairness, and logic. If the Kragraik is involved in a conflict, the task of tiebreaking will go to the leader of our current employer—whether that is a head of a caravan, a king, or an arch-magi).

By general agreement, one of the chiefs, the Lothlati, serves as the face and primary negotiator of the tribe. However, the first face of the tribe will be Kadlazan, the first Lothrek.

Factions:
  • Rekkagla: Fighters. The rekkagla will be further divided into squads or groups when more join, but for now, they work as a team. Scouts are included in this faction. The leader of this faction, the Lothrek, may be challenged for his/her position at any time—more information on that later.
Symbol: Crescent scar beneath the eye
Leader: Lothrek—the most skilled and highly-respected of the warriors.

  • Laugkagla: Healers. They work with herbs and medicines, which they carry on their back. They may employ any other member of the clan to haul their supplies around. The job of a healer is diverse—there may be herbalists, infectious medicine experts, surgeons, or even experimenters.
Symbol: Beaded band around one front ankle—the shape and design of the beads indicates their specialty.
Leader: Lothlaug—the cleverest and most knowledgeable of the healers.

  • Jarnkagla: Shamans. They are our priests and guides through this world. Like the healers, the tasks of the shamans are diverse—some are priests, other storytellers, singers, fortunetellers, or astronomers.
Symbol: Nose piercing—the exact design of the nosering indicates their specialty.
Leader: Lothjarn—the wisest and most spiritual of the shamans.

  • Latikagla: Judges of fair play—referees, if you like. Respect is earned by answering challenges, but no one wants a challenge to get out of hand. That’s where the judges come in—it is their task to determine whether a challenge is reasonable or whether it presents too much of a risk for the individuals involved. More important challenges, such as challenging a sitting lothrek, a Prakgek (challenge of respect), or the right of passage into adulthood (the Fear-Slaying), must be overseen by a judge, or they will be deemed invalid; in the case of a Prakgek, the individuals involved will also be punished! It is the latikagla who set up each Fear-Slaying ritual and preside over them. Ambassadors and diplomats are members of this faction as well.
Symbol: A beaded necklace or choker, the exact design of which indicates their specialty.
Leader: Lothlati—the fairest and wisest of the judges.

  • Factionless: Two tasks within our clan are not limited to factions—one may be held by anyone in any faction, and the other is a member of no faction at all.
Kragraik: the clan tiebreaker, a fair, level-headed, logical individual who can be trusted to make unbiased decisions. The Kragraik may belong to any faction, but may not be a faction leader. All of us—down to the last cub—vote on who the Kragraik should be. ((Totally has a symbol, too. I’ve just lost the paper on which I’ve written it down. –GE))
Alurkag: the crafter, the one who makes all of those noserings and bracelets and chokers and scars and whatnot. The Alurkag does not belong to any faction, but remains separate from them. Despite this, the Alurkag is a well-respected and extremely valuable member of the clan, and may take apprentices as they see fit.

Traditions Sorry, I had to drop the first-person here, it was just getting really hard to describe.

  • Scars and piercings: together, scars and piercings tell the story of each kag; their deeds, their actions, and their history. The system of piercing and scars will very much be a work in progress, growing more elaborate over time. Feel free to suggest some stuff! Each kag earns a tooth or claw earring upon passing adulthood; this is the symbol of a fully-fledged member of our clan.

  • Naming: there is no set tradition on naming, though orcish words nad names are preferred. They can be WoW orcish, Black Speech, made-up words that sound kinda orc-y, whatever. But the inspiration for this colony came from orcs, so that’s the theme.

  • Idols: idols are seen as children in potential; a yolilitzli may carve a dozen or more at a time, and when some of them turn into cubs, the rest are simply considered to not be ready yet for life. When traveling from place to place, idols are carried by their older siblings, whether those siblings are adults or cubs (though cubs may be required to carry fewer of them). A lost idol must be recovered, lest the child wake up alone in an unfriendly place. Prauta Fos will do whatever they can to retrieve a lost idol—even an idol that does not have the potential to awaken (this may change over time as they begin to notice what kind of bonds produce children).

  • Children: all kagla care for all cubs, though the cubs’ parents will give them the most care. Childhood is seen as a time to play, a time to learn, and a time to challenge yourself. Cubs are encouraged to interact with each other and to lead active lifestyles. Cubs are trained in basic self-defense, but during combat, they are instructed to hide in the bushes or the trees or the undergrowth, out of harm’s way.

  • Training: at some point in their childhood, cubs choose their future profession. An adult will teach them their craft or, if no member of the clan can teach them, a teacher will be found elsewhere. In this case, the cub will be left with their teacher while the band looks for work elsewhere in the vicinity, returning occasionally to check up on how their cub is doing. Cubs who are given a profession wear a painted wooden band on their tail to show that they have made a decision. Newly joined adults who are in training also wear the band.

  • The Fear-Slaying: the Fear-Slaying serves as both a coming-of-age ceremony and an entrance ceremony for any adult wishing to join Prauta Fos. The potential member/potential adult is put to a test based on their greatest fear. The exact nature of the trial is decided by the Latikagla and the Lothlati. They will decide whether or not the adolescent/newcomer has passed the test. If they have, they are an official kag of Prauta Fos and receive the official claw/tooth earring. If they are wearing a training band at the time, it will be removed only when their teacher deems their training complete.

  • Prakgek: a Prakgek is a challenge of respect. Should one kag lose respect for another, he or she announces this loss of respect to everyone in the band. Both members of this conflict issue a challenge to the other one. If they both complete their challenges fairly, respect is restored. Prakgek must be overseen by a member of the Latikagla (if a Latikagla is part of the challenge, they do not count for this position). A Prakgek may not be issued by a cub.

  • Rules for Challenges: it is recognized that challenges could—and will—get out of hand. As such, there are rules as to what is or is not a reasonable challenge.

    1. A challenge should not be impossible for that B’alam’s physiology. For example, you may not challenge a wingless B’alam to a flying contest. Nor is it fair to challenge a Fire Triber to an extreme cold tolerance test—unless it is the Fear-Slaying—or an Ice Triber to extreme heat tolerance (unless it is a Fear-Slaying). Any B’alam who does survive a situation they should not have will definitely earn everyone’s respect!

    2. A challenge may not be fatal.

    3. More rules will be added by the latikagla at later times.

  • Courtship and Bonding: courtship traditionally consists of both members issuing challenges to each other (flirty challenges are definitely allowed!). When both parties are satisfied, they bond. The bond may be celebrated by members of both families, but usually bonding is considered to be a private affair. There are no rules in Prauta Fos as to who can bond with whom.

  • Lothprak: the Challenge of the War-Chief. There may be some situations in which the Lothrek needs to be replaced. Doubt may be cast on the efficacy of the Lothrek by poor performance, bad decisions, dissatisfaction of their customers or of the warriors as a whole, or mounting injuries amongst the rekkagla. There may even be times in which the Lothrek is unable to serve but is unable or unwilling to realize this. In any of these cases, it is clear that the Lothrek must be replaced. One of the rekkagla may challenge the Lothrek, either to a regular challenge—if courage and cunning are in doubt—or to a duel—if skill in combat is in doubt. The potential challenger must have the respect and support of the rest of the rekkagla. Should they not have that respect, they will not be allowed by the Lothlati to issue the challenge. The winner of the Lothprak is declared to be the Lothrek. All Lothprak must be overseen by the Lothlati; until he or she is present, the Lothprak may not begin.

  • Beliefs: At the moment, Prauta Fos’s religion is under construction. I’d like to see it morph into a form of polytheism later down the line, but this will depend on the activity of the shamans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can any B'alam join? Sure! Regardless of where they came from, whether their name is Elvish or Aztec, their tribe (except Ice Tribe; see first post). Doesn't matter. All are welcome, though I’d like to see a couple more winged B’alam join.

What's their homeland? A little hollow in an oak forest, just big enough for a shout to be heard from one end to another. A creek runs through it. This is their supposed home that they like to return to occasionally, but at the moment, there is no one left to guard the hollow. There will be a plot event in which they make a final decision whether to leave the hollow forever or to set up a permanent, guarded base camp.

Do you intend to make this an official colony? Yep! We will need twelve members, though (not including Kadlazan).

Why aren’t the crafters a fifth faction? Because I am derp and only realized that they need a crafter at the last minute. At the end of the Hollow Plot they will make a decision as to whether or not the Alurkagla should be their own faction. If the decision is yes, the role of the Kragraik will be abolished and the Alurkag will become the leader of the new crafter’s faction and a fifth member of the council of leaders.

Oh man. Dictionary, please? Er...if you need it, I'll make a dictionary of the words I've made up, as well as the few words I've borrowed (at the moment, the only ones I've borrowed are the name "Prauta Fos" itself!). Just...let me know if you need it!

Suggestions
We’d love some suggestions! Some things we’d like suggestions on:

  • Beliefs
  • Traditions
  • Marks of rank and personal history
  • Plot ideas! This is a band of mercenaries for hire.
