Disclaimer: Much of what is written here is what the future Valkyries will be. Starting out, it will be a few members gathering with the equal goal of making a home. Traditions, beliefs and many of the roles will be something that will come with time.

 

[Mewsings of An Angel]

A matriarchal society who have made their home along the face of a cliff that connects to the coastal waters.
The males are seen as weak and dogged by greed and mistrust, whilst females are considered strong in mind with the ability to fight off the urges that lead to the downfalls of others.
They wear armor hewn from crystal, stone, wood and other materials made to protect them during conflicts, whether in the skies or on the ground
The emblem they bear is normally that of a wing or a bird, and in rare cases a symbol that may represent a certain individual's prowess.
There are three major Tribes represented here: Fire, Ice and Wind.
Those in other Tribes are still seen as useful, and may be a part of the Divisions, but may not hold Battalion roles.

[Only ever ONE of each Race. When the Skati are ready to step down, they will hand it to a successor, normally a daughter of their own family.]
Those who believe themselves born of The Great Mother (Grand Weaver) herself, who are of the strongest blood and of strength that has no equal.
There are currently three Skati that are within the Valkyries (possibly more later...).

This is the branch of the Valkyries that are the Warriors.
They have roles that keep the peace and protect their home from all outsiders.

Warmasters
[Unlimited roles + 1 Leader]
Normally chosen by the Skati, those within this group act as combat teachers to all of the Battalion.
They teach them all they need to know on how to stay in shape and ready if any threaten the peace and safety of their home.
Warmasters and their specialty can range from physical combat, to the rigors of exerting the body limits and keeping it in strong, peak condition.
They are honored for not only their position, but for the fact that in having such a position, they have shown their prowess in battle and have chosen to pass on the knowledge to fledglings.

Guardians

Scouts
[1 Leader + Unlimited]
The outriders of the group.
Those who are within this group may be gone for many days away from home, keeping an eye on the boundaries of their home.
They are skilled at being stealthy and quick.

Watchers
[1 Leader + Unlimited]
Those who watch from the cliffs and palisades around the City.
They watch those who come and go from the main Gate that leads out along the Ocean Cliff.

Shieldmaidens
[1 Leader + Unlimited]
The guards who remain within the City, protecting the inhabitants from one another.
They are essentially the police who keep order.

Elite
[Dependent on the Skati themselves. They can choose however many Elite they would like.]
The Elite are those chosen from each of the other groups to serve as the Guard of the Skati.
They are strong in mind and body and are the confidants that the Skati will turn to at their greatest and worst for advice and a shoulder to lean on.
They are trusted and seen as the right hand of the Skati.

Protectorate
[Like the Elite, dependent on the Leaders]
Those who protect the leaders of the Divisions, keeping them safe during their day-to-day activities, as well as their travels.
Think of them like personal bodyguards.
They may be hand chosen by the leaders or picked by the Skati.


Fledglings
[Unlimited]
Just like chicks, these are the smallest and weakest within the Battalion.
They are new to the ordeals they will face in training and are unprepared for combat as of yet.
Cubs of the Clan and those joining who are uninitiated are placed within this rank until the Warmasters say otherwise.
They must work hard to prove themselves!

This is the branch where roles such as Merchants, Healers and Artists fall under.
These are roles that are noncombatant in nature and keep the City stocked with food and other essentials, as well as keeping the morale of the inhabitants content.

Maidens of Elfheim
[1 High Priestess who rules over all here. Unlimited in all other positions]
Healers/Oracles/Priestesses
The Maidens are a very tight-knit group that includes those who have chosen to give themselves into the Great Mother's teachings.
They are FEMALE-ONLY and require that they give up all ties to family and loved ones. The only ones allowed to reproduce or find love are the ones chosen by the High Priestess who have a strong heart for the Great Mother and will bestow strong children upon the Maidens.
They may choose to follow many paths here, from being a healer of the body, a healer of the mind, a conduit to the Great Mother, a fortuneteller (of sorts!) or they may find another niche into wish to devote themselves.

Merchant's Guild
[2 Leaders + Unlimited]
Artists, Crafters, Shopkeepers
This branch ranges to all positions that would make any revenue.
It also encompasses jobs that have anything being created like tablets, armor, weapons, etc.
Anybody can be a part of the Merchant's Guild even if they are in another branch, as anyone can create!

Courtesans
[1 Leader + Unlimited]
Musicians, Dancers, Storytellers, Historians, Singers
This branch is one that encompasses the creativity of those who come to live in The City.
The positions range from those who keep records of the happenings in the Valkyries, to those who sing and dance and provide entertainment for others.

Keepers of the Grub (IDK WHAT TO CALL THEM)

Gatherers, Hunters, Waterbearers, Bakers/Chefs, Any job that deals with food.
This branch ranges to all those who create or handle food products.
They can be skilled hunters, to bakers, to those who carry water from one place to another.

A City built into the side of a cliff overlooking the coast and the ocean beyond.
The Valkyries slowly carved into the cliff face, digging out tunnels and caverns that met up to one another. A trail was also painstakingly carved to the beaches below and became one of the only routes in or out of the City besides flight. At first, it will look crude and unhewn, but as more creatures come to call it home, and crafters begin to show their skills, it will slowly transform into a place that will be awe-inspiring. Wooden bridges will connect the rooftops of buildings, allowing for quick passage above, while walkways carved into alleys and streetways will allow passage below. A large building to the back of the city with a large tree growing on it's roof, will be where the Skati will reside and work with one another. Leading from there to either side will be homes of those who are a part of the Battalion, separated to their chosen paths. Branching off from there will be the multitudes of homes where regular citizens and those who are a part of most of the Divisions, save the Maidens of Elfheim, who have made their residence close to the top of the City near a natural pool that dribbles from a hole cut in the rock above, letting light and air filter through. Through the Gate and down the pathway to the beach below, fisherB'alam have built huts and put out nets to capture their prey.

Gender Roles
Females hold roles that are of protection or of the belief system. They will always be the higher gender, and will have a lot of say in how society is ran here. Males, on the other hand, will never hold roles that have to do with anything war-like or battle-oriented. They are considered useful crafters, hunters, courtesans, and the like.

The Great Mother
All are born of the Great Mother, and to Her we return upon dying to join Her in the Great Flight. The Valkyries believe she is the creator of the world and it's many inhabitants. From the blades of grass, to the Paroo that fly in the sky, all are children to Her. She is Good and Evil, Right and Wrong, Moon and the Sun, different sides to the same coin. She only cares for those who believes in Her, live for her. She is creation and destruction, life and death.

Great Flight
The Valkyries believes that when they die, they will join the Great Flight, becoming one with the wind and becoming the gathering of the clouds. From the white clouds of calm, to the warring blackness of thunderstorms and bad weather all those who have passed on.

Enemies
Though there are those who do not share our beliefs, we must respect them. We do battle with strong B'alam and to face them head-on and with a roar in our maws, there is no turning our backs!

The Eternal Quilt - A society who we believe to be perverse and obscene. We must deal with them on a daily basis and they are dangerous!

Names will traditionally follow a Nordic basis, with the possibility of later generations including the -dottir or -son at the end. (Like the father of Sven is named Brey, so he would be called Sven Breyson. Boys would follow their fathers, while girls would follow their mothers.) The parents may also bestow upon their children a name of a fallen elder to show them honor. It is believed that bestowing the name of an ancestor or elder to a child brings back those who have died to watch over those who hold their name.

Marriage (joining of Spirits) is an important part of life within the Valkyries. It marks the passage of a male and female into true adulthood. Normally the parents and family of the two to be wed will gather to exchange dowries (normally it will be trinkets or something that showed the wealth of the family in some way. After this, there would be a great feast. The "wedding" itself will be the first time the two families will be seen together as a whole.

Death is handled in a unique way among the Valkyries. Those who have died of either old age or from battles are given rites of passage back into the arms of the Great Mother. Their bodies will be decorated with runes and the finest tools of their craft, and placed upon a pyre to burn. A feast will be held in their honor, where portions of food will be burned as a way of sending it to follow them to the Beyond. Afterwards, the ashes will be taken by two flighted Valkyries up into the sky above the ocean and cast onto the winds to mingle with the elements as they choose. Sometimes, those who were either close to the deceased or married may create objects to hold some of the ashes close at heart.

What do you aspire to be? Shieldmaiden or Elite
What is your background/personality? She grew up around the outskirts of the Wind tribe, sort of a rogue, searching for somewhere she could feel like she belonged. She is very protective and fierce when she or someone she cares about are in danger. She tends to be prickly on the outside, but underneath that she's kind and affectionate.

What is your background/personality? Tuuli is imaginative, creative and daring. She wishes to see all of the world as she can, and travels happily through the sky. She finds great joy and humor in flying through clouds and crafting the them to be specific shapes while dancing through the skies.

Tuuli is also oddly obsessed with wind chimes, and can be seen making them in her spare time.
