Obakey = a corruption of obake, which refers to supernatural creatures in Japanese folklore
Monoke = a shortening of mononoke, a catchall term for vengeful spirits
Blood Colour: (#002365) Ao Oni
Gender: Female; she/her
Symbol: SPOOPY GOST
Appearance: Little Obakey has shoulder length straight black hair, which is parted to the side and hides one of her eyes completely. Both eyebrows are small dots. Her skin is the standard Alternian grey, though beneath her eyes are prominent blue bags. Her horns are uneven and rounded, providing no means of defense. She dresses in semi-formal wear, often with long flowing sleeves that hide her hands. Her symbol is shown upon a cloth-belt tied around her waist similar to a traditional obi. It depends on the day whether she will wear pants, stockings, or go bare legged but she never wears shorts. Obakey prefers to wear opened toed shoes, generally sandals or geta. She does not wear any jewelry or accessories.
Weapon: An asymmetrical longbow called a yumi used in the traditional style of kyujutsu. It keeps her out of harms way while providing an excellent defense and is mainly used for hunting to gather food. Since these styles and words don't exist on Alternia, Obakey just says she uses a bow and considers herself an archer, nothing more. |

For all of her quirks, Obakey is the type of troll who is easily overlooked. She is highly unobtrusive, preferring not to get in other people's way or cause a fuss. This blue blood is more of a follower than a leader and doesn't need much convincing to go along with plans. She is fairly patient and has a difficult time saying no whenever she is approached with kindness. The opposite isn't quite true of those who treat her roughly; as Obakey prefers to avoid conflict as much as possible, she will almost always be the first to back down from a fight. In fact, she tends to disappear completely for several days if she gets swept up in another troll's anger or bullying.
This particular blueblood hatched on Terror Night. Since she made her way out of the brooding caverns, it has always been her favorite holiday. How could it not, when her Wriggling Day is celebrated by the entire planet? At least, that's how she would like to think of it. In most cases her special day is overshadowed by the Terror Night celebration and Obakey does her best to cater to it. Anything to get more trolls involved. She often screams on this night to get attention, sometimes trying to bribe people over with promises of games and candy, or running amok outside with other trolls as if she was already involved with their group. Obakey loves celebrations and social activities, often capitalizing on holidays so she can interact with others more easily in large groups. Though she would like to stand out and be recognized as an individual, Obakey has no problem being just another face in the crowd -- as long as she can actually be with the crowd.
Obakey is a sulking sort when faced with adversity but she prefers to suffer in silence. In her case, that means bottling up any negative emotions and ignoring them to the best of her ability until they build so much they explode out in a torrent of tears and ear piercing wails. It's nearly impossible to tell when Obakey is actually upset just by looking at the surface. Emotions are a difficult thing for her to understand, especially past the basic three; joy, anger, and sorrow she comprehends and can name within herself but more complex emotions, like jealousy, are much harder for her to process. Even worse, understanding the emotions of others is a hurdle Obakey has yet to cross and causes many misunderstandings and unpleasant interactions for everyone involved. These set backs have developed an acute social anxiety that is a constant struggle but, in spite of it, she looks for opportunities to interact with others at every turn. These situations become even more complicated due to Obakey's own presentation of her emotions; she is prone to laughing, smiling, and crying when she is anxious, ashamed, scared, or sad just as much as when she is excited or happy.
A decisive sort, she often makes quick and impulsive decisions but finds it difficult to explain why outside of gut feelings; "it felt like the right thing to do". Obakey has little concept of personal space and will often stand too close for comfort or otherwise invade other troll's personal bubbles. Offending others is an inevitability with her but Obakey is always very quick to recognize her mistakes and apologize -- when they're pointed out to her. Unfortunately, it's hard for her to realize she has made any sort of transgression without being expressly told, which often leads to more offense given. It doesn't help that, when she is feeling especially timid, Obakey prefers to observe and eavesdrop than take the plunge and interact. This leads to some unfortunate situations that might border on stalking simply because she doesn't know how to approach a person, group, or situation but very much wants to be involved. Obakey also follows a finders-keepers mentality and thinks it is a very clever prank to hide or rearrange other troll's items. As it stands, unless she is being very obviously bullied, Obakey doesn't really see the difference between positive or negative attention and getting attention is one of her strongest driving forces.
To Obakey, the hemospectrum is not something she can ignore but she also doesn't treat each color by stereotype or with hard and fast rules. Her own belief and treatment of it mainly have to do with those above her and the ruling class. As a blueblood she is most assuredly well off and well regarded by the spectrum and has a lot of privilege over lower class trolls but Obakey chooses to ignore this in favor of making as many friends as possible. Anyone blue and below is always welcome. It's the high bloods and sea dwelling royals she worries about, wanting to make good impressions on the land dwelling purple bloods and outright fearing the violence and carnage spread by the sea dwellers. Physical pain and bloodshed are very frightening to Obakey, though she does her best to appear unphased.
Many trolls might consider Obakey a scaredy-cat despite her interest in the spooky and morbid. Her love of all things otherworldly, morbid, and unsettling only exists within highly controlled settings that Obakey can moderate. As soon as she loses control of the fear it stops being fun. She enjoys looking at bones, collects old occult objects, decorates with an abundance candles, and thinks fire is pretty. What she doesn't enjoy, above all else, is total darkness. The lights suddenly going out due to power failure and being completely lost in a pitch black void would ruin her day, so the candles serve a practical use as well (if not being a bit of a fire hazard). Moonlight also helps to keep this at bay, it would require a complete darkness to frighten Obakey and the results would mean high octane anxiety, a lot of screaming, and acting like a trapped animal. Despite her fun with horror having an end, Obakey does have a very strong morbid curiosity about anything unnerving. It's almost masochistic, in that she knows these things will terrify her and mess her up for a while but she can't bring herself to look away or not experience them. She isn't sure the tears and difficulty sleeping are worth it but missing out on something seems like a far worse price to pay.
Unexplained events, paranormal activity, these are things that Obakey has the most interest in. They allow great room for speculation and theory, which she is especially fond of on her own and because it opens so many doors for discussion with others. Obakey strongly prefers the journey and experience when compared to cold hard facts. Facts aren't fun, they don't allow for any creativity, and some people are so vehement about their facts that they won't take any alternative concepts. This is extremely frustrating for Obakey and often she will deal with it by making up her own facts that seem more interesting. She wants to begin investigating the paranormal and experience these unexplained events for herself but it would be even better if she had friends to do it with. A group of trolls investigating mysteries across Alternia, having club meetings and story exchanges in their designated fort, and exploring abandoned urban expanses all seem very alluring to her.
Strengths
Adrift: Light of foot and soft of movement, Obakey is well practiced in the art of sneaking. It isn't intentional, just something she picked up over the years of watching and emulating the movements of her lusus. Since she cannot float along as a spectral entity, this is the next best thing. As a result, she is naturally stealthy and might creep up on others by accident. She's startled a few trolls this way. It helps that she doesn't wear anything jingly. It comes in handy when hunting for food or exploring.
Creative: Obakey tends to think outside of the box when it comes to most things. When it comes to concrete facts, she could take them or leave them; it's the task of figuring them out that interests her more than the results. She doesn't subscribe to one singular belief on anything and leaves herself very open to interpretation. Other opinions and points of view are important to her and she will never dismiss another troll's thoughts.
Genre Savvy: Well versed in things that go bump in the night (or, during the day...), Obakey understands the overt and subtle nuances of horror. She greatly enjoys analysis and is able to quickly compare various attributes of all things spooky and pin-point referential material. Though she isn't limited solely to the topics of horror, it is most assuredly her favorite and what she knows best. It helps that such familiarity makes it more difficult for Obakey to be tricked. Though she is a push over she isn't the most gullible troll and can usually pick up on someone giving her the run around.
Flaws
Volume: Obakey has no sense of volume control. At any given moment, under any circumstances, she will only ever be at her maximum or minimum speaking volume. The majority of the time, Obakey speaks very softly -- not quite a whisper but a gentle, raspy voice. However, if goaded into speaking up, she feels she must be heard, or is otherwise excited or spooked, Obakey will promptly shriek the loudest she can. This is something else she picked up from her lusus and is completely involuntary. It makes things worse when, due to her low voice, Obakey breaches other trolls' personal space to whisper in their ears so that she is heard.
Pacifistic: By blue blood standards, Obakey could be considered weak. She doesn't like confrontation and will avoid it if at all possible, is afraid of feeling physical pain, and she refuses to fight back under most circumstances. The idea of hurting others doesn't interest her and she lacks the volatile temper common among her blood caste. As such, she will hardly ever stand up for herself and even finds difficulty sticking up for others. Obakey will always try the passive route regardless of her beliefs and can be manipulated just as easily through kind words as threats of violence.
Social Graces: Obakey finds it difficult to read other troll's emotions or expressions, which may lead to quite a few misunderstandings with her peers. Her ideas of fun and games might be considered boring, stupid, or overly complicated but she is quick to suggest them because she finds them fun and interesting. It is hard for Obakey to put herself in other people's shoes and she can often be obnoxious when excited or inspired without realizing she is putting others off. |

Spookmom takes on the the appearance of a ghostly specter vaguely reminiscent of Obakeys own symbol. She takes appearance cues from the banshees, poltergeists, and yurei. Though her shape is most similar to a long tailed sheet ghost, she has thin skeletal arms that are held out with her hands dangling limply at the wrist. Long hair hangs in front of her face and covers any discernible features besides two floating ghostly flames on either side of her head.
Obakey picked up a number of behaviors from Spookmom, most notably her banshee wail. She is also used to moving quietly as her lusus makes no sound when drifting through the air. Spookmom is not terribly strict but wants nothing more than to keep Obakey safe and out of trouble. She is very protective and will follow Obakey outside whenever she leaves her hive. If others mistreat her spoopybaby, Spookmom will get her RAGE on and yell and scream (her only method of communication aside from garbled whispers and spooky sobbing). She wants to raise Obakey as even keeled and be so herself but is prone to extreme emotions and misunderstandings, much like her little wriggler.
Due to Obakey's natural desire to avoid conflict, getting through the trials of the brooding caverns was extremely difficult. Spookmom attached to her very quickly and nursed Obakey back from a terrified mess with haunting coos and a lot of cradling. As such, Obakey relies heavily upon her lusus for moral and emotional support, as well as general comfort. Spookmom is all too willing to give it and spoiled Obakey early on, something she is realizing the older Obakey becomes and continues to have difficulty socializing and surviving without assistance. Ideally, Spookmom wants to continue being heavily involved in Obakey's life but desires for the troll to be more self reliant and have better hope of filling her quadrants. As a result, Spookmom sometimes takes more of a back seat and denies Obakey assistance, which makes the blueblood frustrated and upset due to her lusus' mixed signals. Screaming matches between them are not unusual but almost always end in hugs and comfort shortly after.

Located lakeside in Four Fronds
With traditional Japanese flair, Obakey's home is spacious and extremely stylized. The interior keeps to a thatched floor and sliding door format but otherwise mixes and matches between East Asian and Western styles of furniture and decoration. While the exterior is extremely thematic, inside is anachronistic and jarring. Lighting is provided by hanging lamps, carried lanterns, and a large assortment of candles. The structure sits a bit out on the lake where the water is still shallow, connected by a pier-like bridge. The hive, water, and bridge are often covered in bright pink leaves of the nearby forest.
Obakey often peers out into the neighborhood and observes the behaviors of those who live there. The rumors of lowbloods hiding out in the forest is exciting and something that Obakey wants to explore in the future. Though she loves the location for its beauty and mystery, the fact higher bloods use it as a vacation spot is extremely intimidating and makes her fearful -- especially in light of the lowblood manhunts.
