It might be noted at some point that Mauhuiztic's first memory had been a deep and abiding sense of peace, and that every morning when he woke and every evening when he fell asleep, he could feel that same sense of peace waiting for him. It was that peace that drove him to spread it among all B'alam. It was that sense of peace that led him back and forth across the continent to meet new peoples and offer his services as diplomat. It was that sense of peace that had him, limping now, over the plains in search of a walled settlement called Milintic Square. His shoulder was getting better, but it still troubled him. It had been injured in an encounter two weeks ago with a tahtll called Savitar, and since then it had mostly healed. Even better, he was feeling more and more optimistic about his conversation with the other cat. He felt like he'd made some progress. The shoulder, though, still twinged when he put too much weight on it. It was thanks to lord Savitar's medicine that it had had not gotten worse.
But peace was worth that. Well worth that. Someday, Mauhuiztic would have the courage to offer his services to magi themselves, but in the meantime, he was seeking out the lesser, though not in importance, leaders of B'alam. Today's meeting, if he was lucky, would be with the Rose Chief, a tahtll called Ajax. What news he'd heard of Ajax spoke of him as a warrior and a tactician, and his people, Clan Bayeux, were supposed to be a clan of honor, open to all tribes to join. That at least sounded hopeful. Honor could be difficult to deal with at times, but at least honorable people accepted that others had an honor of their own, and sadly, honor was all Mauhuiztic had to offer at this point. As the walls of Milintic Square got closer on the horizon, he repeated to himself, over and over, in soft pants under his breath, the words he would present to the Rose Chief.

Calling the structure in front of Mauhuiztic a square was a little misleading. Sure, it was square-shaped, but when referring to an architectural landmark as a "square" usually brought to mind a flat, paved expanse lively with people and business. The structure in front of the wandering diplomat was, in fact, a fortress, or at least, the beginnings of one. It was a great stone wall that enclosed quite a large piece of land. Ah. Milintic Square must be inside. Personally, Mau didn't see much point to having a wall. Sure, it stopped people from wandering inside, but beyond that it had little purpose. There were B'alam patrolling the walls as well--for what purpose? Defense, clearly, but...
Well, it would seem that Ajax had quite a lot more followers than Savitar did. This, then, might be a bigger challenge than he had anticipated, and he'd already known that this would be a challenge--they all are. Every encounter is one. I can overcome it. I will overcome it. At least he was in the right place, on the right track, so far.
Now that he was within shouting distance, Mau plopped his behind down onto the ground. He kept his claws, as ever, sheathed inside his paws, and his shoulders held high to mask his small size. His size display was not meant to intimidate, nor to imply that intimidation was his goal--rather, it was to pull an atmosphere of dignity around him and give himself more importance. He had to take all that he could get at this stage in his life. "I am Mauhuiztic," he called out. "I wish to meet Rose Chief Ajax, and offer the possibility of future services to Clan Bayeux." It wasn't the best choice of words, but it was what he had come up with. And he was confident that it would work, so long as he had an opportunity to make clear his full intentions.
Conrad The Mighty I'm definitely still interested if you are!
