attempt 1
Brenley couldn't quite decide how he felt about losing his impromptu spar with Piper. On the one hand, he had come to this school to learn everything. not just the more brainy topics, and therefore should have been more frustrated that he hadn't bested her in the brawn category. On the other, Piper had kissed his cheek. He didn't like that such a simple and, prior to coming to Amityville, meaningless act could so easily override his innate desire to better himself, but he couldn't deny that it had. In a somewhat desperate attempt to counteract The Piper Effect, the boil put on some of his most worn out clothing and made his way out to Thunder Road the next morning.
Looking out over the course that now stretched in front of him, Brenley didn't know quite what to think of it. 'Bumpy' was certainly something that could be said about it, as was 'treacherous.' And 'hilly.' The boil inhaled and exhaled slowly. Okay. He was ready to—
Out of nowhere, a glittering bolt of lightning crackled out of the clear, blue sky and struck Brenley squarely in the chest. He flew backward through the air, landing with a muffled grunt and quite a bit of pain. Well. That was one way to start things off.

He remained untouched by electricity for a good while after that, running as if his life depended on it because, well, it certainly seemed to. Bren grew exhausted quickly, however, despite the apparent ease with which he maintained speed. It seemed that when certain conditions were met, he at the very least had the capability to make exertion seem effortless.
He thought of the experiment he had left back in his room: a tincture that would render minipets invisible... at least the ones that already weren't. While it was true he hadn't gotten very far with it, he was just certain that he was on the right track, that soon he would watch Screech as the dromaiusaurus faded to tangible nothingness and—
The bolt that struck him this time was not as kind as the first, if bolts of lightning could be called kind. It knocked Bren flat once again, and this time he didn't think he would be getting up.

The first thing he grew conscious of was a sharp whine that seemed to originate from the inside of his skull. Where he expected to hear the scuffling of his hands in the dirt when he moved them, he registered only the same, constant whining. It drew his eyes open slowly, pupils darting in search of its source. He didn't find it. He couldn't see anything at all.
Slowly his sight returned, but Bren remained deaf to everything but the neverending shriek. He pushed himself up on an elbow, examining his surroundings with a wrinkle of his nose. The earth was scorched to crispy blackness in a circle around him, and his clothes were nearly ruined. It was a good thing they hadn't been any of his particularly treasured articles.
"Okay," the boil muttered, unaware that he had made a sound. With a deep breath and grit teeth he was on his feet again, and what lay beyond a ten foot radius was brought into immediate focus. He was standing on an obstacle course. Thunder Road. He was standing in the middle of the track in the middle of the afternoon, the odds of lightning striking a third time pretty much a hundred percent.
The boil began to run, and after a time he was finally able to hear something new besides the pounding gallop of his feet as his steps thudded up through his body. The end was near, or so he thought. He started off moving slowly by necessity, his legs unable to go as fast as he wanted after their nasty shock. The pumpkins and gravestones littering the course proved a bit of a challenge, especially when he came to a patch that had been thoroughly demolished. Brenley stumbled due to his uneven footing, slamming back onto the ground face first. Fog closed in around him, obscuring the path forward and any chance he had of finishing the course quickly. Lightning struck nearby, illuminating the mist in blinding flashes. He had to get up. He had to...
--- He couldn't have said how long he had been out when he awoke, his own panicked breathing loud in his ears. It didn't take him long to deduce that he had reformed in the nurse's office, or that she was a very good nurse indeed. Not only had he regained his hearing, thankfully, but he was barely in any pain at all. All he was left with was a bitter feeling of disappointment that he had been defeated so easily. He was going to have to do something about that. He was going to have to do something about that right now.

Luckily, the sky was still light when he emerged... or light again, he couldn't really tell which without further information that he didn't possess. Either way, conditions were perfect for another run. It was one thing to be bested by a person, but to be beaten by a crooked trail and some lightning... well, that wasn't sitting well with him at all.
Brenley rolled his shoulders and took a deep breath as he reached the starting line of Thunder Road for the second time. Although it was bright and quite sunny where he stood, the course itself had gone dark, making it easy to see the flashes of DOOM as they peppered the track ahead.
He had come here this morning to prove that he wasn't completely useless when it came to physical activity and he had been struck down almost immediately for standing still. If he didn't move now, he was sure to repeat that mista—
The bolt hit the ground several feet to his left, lighting the hem of his shorts aflame until he smacked it out. Bren launched himself forward, running away from the lightning as much as he was running toward the finish line.
"Don't stand still," he muttered as he pushed himself to pick up speed. If nothing else, at least he had learned that lesson today.

Up ahead, Brenley noticed a large heap of discolored pumpkins on the track and he ran straight for them, their promise of protection giving him another temporary boost. His face twisted in disgust as he slid between their skins, the partially rotted flesh cocooning and guarding him from another strike. But he couldn't stay here indefinitely. The boil peeked out of his safe haven, looking for anything that might help him take some of the pumpkins with him, but all he saw was a long, wooden stick with a sharp end. It appeared too heavy to carry for long, but perhaps it might offer some shelter, at least for a little while.
With a wet, sucking sound, Bren extricated himself from the pumpkins and hurried over to the stick. It was just as heavy as he'd imagined it would be, and as the reaper propped it up, he tried to suppress thoughts of being struck dead while he worked. He then nudged the nearest pumpkin closer to him with his foot. Bren lifted it with a grunt, stabbing it through the end of the stick and holding his makeshift lightning conductor high in the air as he took off again.
