Pickworth was washing his hands in the bathroom when the fog started creeping around his ankles. He looked in the mirror. He remembered the last year very clearly- stolen meals, sleeping outdoors, wearing makeup and ridiculous clothes.

He just couldn't remember why.

Right now he had a room, and a roof over his head. His hair was brown and neatly combed. His face was clear of greasepaint. His clothes were plain, his socks were folded, his shoes were tied.

He just couldn't figure out why, as a clearly safer, secure, more sensible person (a screw-up), he was somehow less...

He dried his hands. It didn't do him any good to think about. This was better, this was- the hallway wasn't one he recognized. The strange and echoing planks with creaking wood weren't Amity.

Things were supposed to be safe. Predictable. So why-?

"Hello?" he tried.

Rolling a 4: NO HEALING IS ALLOWED IN BATTLE. Someone is whispering to you about something, but you can't place out what, it is hard to focus. Everything distracts you, even the tiniest flash of light or flicker of movement.

"It's not like I asked for us to be lumped together again," hissed the shorter of the two Sun hunters. "You think I would willingly go anywhere with you alone?" There was enough scorn in the girl's voice to burn, and the taller blonde was lucky that people didn't drop dead from a glare. So what if there was still something there that made it impossible for Peyton to sit by while spider zombies tore him to bits. That didn't mean things were all copacetic between them. Not by a long short.

Someone higher up on the food chain then them clearly had a very twisted sense of humor to have sent the pair alone on this excursion. It was a little convenient to be mere coincidence.

"Don't care," Evan rumbled, using his greater height to his advantage and lengthening his strides, hoping to leave Peyton behind. Maybe he could claim she got eaten by something big and terrible, he mused as he walked ahead. It had to happen sometimes, right? Granted, he would have a hell of a time explaining how he had gotten away without so much as a scratch...

He wouldn't leave Peyton behind, though, regardless of the fact that she probably wouldn't think twice before feeding him to anything they came across. He owed her, and the amount of that debt was in direct proportion to however much she hated him at any given time.

That didn't make her any less of a pain in his a**, though. They were Hunters, and she was going to scare away all of their prey if she didn't keep it down. It was only because he tuned her out that he was able to hear a voice call out. Evan held a hand up behind him, gesturing for Peyton to stop. The creaking of someone walking over loose floorboards didn't sound all that far away, for all that they had been alone so far. His stance shifted as he crept quietly towards the doorway, gesturing with a wave of his hand for Peyton to move up.

There were the muffled sounds of voices, not-too-far off. At least, Pickworth thought he'd heard...

"I think I may have used the wrong door?" he said, turning to reopen the bathroom, and finding it chillingly locked.

Evan's flippant dismissal was enough to make the shorter blonde seethe. She glowered up at him, lips parting to say something else as equally scathing, but his hand shot up in her face, cutting her off, and it didn't matter how much she disliked him, or how angry she was at the situation, he still had more combat training then she did. It was alarming how easy it was to simply trust him when he motioned her into silence and directed her to move up. It was probably for the best she didn't dwell on it too much.

But she did stop talking, and she did stop, waiting for him to direct her, then moved up where indicated. Warrick was summoned to her hands, and she curled her fingers against the warm metal, squeezing it into her palms.

Now that it was quiet she could hear it, too. The squeak of floorboards, the shuffle of feet, and then, almost casually, a voice. But just the one. There was no answer to the questioning lit that had floated through the doorway. She turned to glance back at Evan.

Evan's hand remained hovering in the air between himself and Peyton as he went into threat assessment mode: one voice, one set of footsteps on a floor that was more likely naturally creaking than straining under the unknown's weight. Nothing specific in the tone of voice--no growl, no hiss--to indicate that it was anything other than humanoid. His hand dropped to his side as he decided that it was safe enough to proceed, moving with careful silence towards the open doorway leading into the next room.

He was somewhat surprised to see a normal, human-looking kid on the other side, trying and failing to open a locked door. His unassuming appearance didn't inspire any kind of overwhelming relief; Evan knew from experience that a monster could exist just as easily beneath a bland exterior as it could with fangs and wings and claws in plain sight. Still, the possibility also existed, however slight, that it was another Hunter or a human who had found their way into the House.

It did appear to be just the one, though, which was a cautious point in their favor, and Evan and Peyton were covering the only other way out. He took a few deliberate steps forward, making no effort to conceal the sound of his boots against the wood. He wanted to be heard, and although it might have blown their element of surprise, he couldn't just attack without being completely sure. "Name, rank, and division," Evan said, his hands curled loosely at his sides--nonthreatening, for now, but prepared to summon his weapon if he didn't like the answer he got.

Pickworth blinked, and answered slowly and suspiciously.

"Pickworth, Scaretary, 4th floor accounting? Although," he turned back to wrestle with the door handle, "I haven't- been in to work... I mean, it's been...a long shriekend." He seemed embarrassed, "Are you...from the office...?

He did not look like the right age for accounting.

As Evan approached the seemingly normal looking kid, Peyton stayed in the doorway, guarding the exit, watching her partner's back. She stood half turned, so pale eyes could watch both inside the room and out. It sounded like Evan knew what he was doing, so the other Sun said nothing, letting him talk. Then lifted a curious brow as the kid answered. Accounting? He didn't seem the type, nor the age. Besides, how did an accountant get into the haunted house?

<Shriekend is not a human term. Tread lightly, Halfpint.>

Always.

"What's a shriekened?" Her voice wasn't hostile, not yet, but there was an edge to it. Her gaze flicked from the kid, to Evan's back, then back to the kid.

Pickworth gave them both a strange look.

"Ha ha," he said finally, "I'd almost forgotten what they were like myself." Shriekends. Awkward pause. "Working hard, or hardly working?" He quoted stiffly. It was the kind of very dry and poster office humor that was allowed.
