Lan did not often like to wander around Halloween alone. Most days, she had a minipet. Other days she would walk perhaps with another of her clan. On occasion with those not from her clan. Yet rarely, rarely did she venture from the sanctuary alone. And if she did, she usually had a task in mind, or was meeting someone. Today she’d been shopping. For what, she hoped, would be gifts. Acceptable ones. Ones that her friends might like. Enjoy even.
She still didn’t know what gift to get her cousin. He made her feel like those darn minipet traders did what with their lots listed only as ‘Impress Me’. He was a hard pony to shop for, the heir. Not that it seemed to matter. As Lan opened her eyes, she didn’t feel like she had her purchases in hand any longer. He felt something she would not normally hand in hand. A stick. As she opened her eyes, she looked at it. What in the ancestor’s names was she doing with a stick of all things and- Stiffening, she looked at her hands. Black nails were gone, replaced with normal ones. Ones she never had before. And from there? It just got worse. Her clothes were not her own. They were drab, dull and nothing what she might normally even be caught dead in. Had someone drugged her to pull some horrible joke on her? If so, it was in exceedingly poor taste. Hands went up and- She screamed. She was missing her horns.

She had, like always, been dozing away in a tree. It was a habit Jay had failed to shake from her War isle days. Even if she wasn’t settled comfortably in a tree house like before, the sensation of knowing she was high up in a tree like old times was enough to set her at ease. The bluejay’s head rested against the tree trunk while her bandaged hands were neatly folded in her lap. Her chest rose and fell slowly while she kept her wings curled around herself. She could have spent most of the day in that tree taking a nap, but something else had different plans for her.
A bird-like squawk escaped her lips as she fell to the ground suddenly. It was an odd sensation, considering she didn’t remember rolling off the branch at all. Actually, she didn’t remember wearing black robes either. Jay crinkled her nose as she held the sleeves with two fingers. She was covered up way too much, but at least it was loose. Then again, loose clothes easily caught onto things during fights.
Shoot, Jay couldn’t remember when she got a stick in her hand either. She quizzically stared at the plain wooden stick in her hands. Sure, it was pretty fancy (in a way, perhaps) but the warrior had no need for pretty sticks. She nearly flung it away, but then realized something important was missing.
Her wings.
“W-What?” she stammered as she spun around in a vain attempt to find her wings. She lifted her robe, but only found dull clothes underneath. “What is going on?! I don’t understand.” Jay frowned as she searched for the nearest mirror to inspect her reflection more closely.

Who ever had done this had a terrible sense of humor. As Lan looked around her, the voice of someone familiar reached her ears. “Jay?” Hope, that she wasn’t alone. Why Jay would be here Lan hadn’t a clue, but a fellow horsewoman was better than no one. And maybe she knew why Lan didn’t have horns. It had to be a trick. Just like that dang illusion queen thing. She just didn’t want to remain in some hellish nightmare, hornless, like some… some fre-. He mind froze at the thought. She shouldn’t think of a noble without horns as such. She shouldn’t. Yet she did. A bitter reality, one she tried to ignore. After all, she couldn’t just make exceptions. That wasn’t how things worked.
Mengyao was an oddity, but he wasn’t.. like that. If he could face each day without them, so could she. She just.. would need to just.. illusion. She was fine, she’d be fine. Something was coming from down the hall, and Lan looked around her, gold eyes finding the blue hair. “Jay, if that is you… let’s go.” One door to take, Lan just wanted her horns back. And to be back in her robes. And not deal with illusions.

To be honest, this entire world absolutely and completely baffled the jabberjay. First, she no longer possessed her beautiful wings and for some reason she could not summon her dagger to fling at the dog, which would have been rather helpful. Jay would have gladly thrown it at one of its many eyes, but no, here the warrior was, stuck in a room with only one familiar face and donning loose robes that were completely dull and nothing like her usual clothes.
And to make matters even better, she had to run around the room trying to avoid the three-headed dog’s monstrous jaws while holding onto an injured arm. Whatever had caused it, couldn’t it have at least given Jay her bandages? It felt so awkward to flit around with bare hands.
“Lan! What’re we supposed to do?” called out the horseman as she once again jumped out of the dog’s way. She crinkled her nose at the monster, but continued to wiggle her way through its legs and perked up when she noticed a trapdoor. “Oh! Hey—“ Her voice was cut off as the dog finally found the bird at last. It almost seemed to grin as it snapped her right up.
Oops.
