Introduction and Story

Ever think about fairy tales and say “I would love to be a knight in shining armor, with a magic sword and shield to go save a princess!” to yourself? Do you ever watch movies about the distant future and think about how much better life would be with all that advanced technology? Do you ever compare the two? At one point you must have thought about why the magic of fairy tales and the technology of science-fiction have never been shown together. Well there is one very simple answer to that question: Magic and Technology can not coexist.

Magic is based on understanding the forces of nature and controlling the flow of chi or mana. Taking any material, bending it to your will, using it in unusual ways, changing it into something else, and in some cases, creating something out of nothing. Magic is unexplainable, unstable, complicated, and very dangerous in the wrong hands but it can be absolutely devastating in the right hands. This force has done much good and makes any story a wonderful source of entertainment however, it weighs heavily on the mind. Magic corrodes one's mind, making them addicted to it, making them need it, making them hungry for more. It is a rare occurrence but when it does happen, it has terrible results.

On the other hand, Science is based on fact and knowing exactly how things work. With science many people can learn what makes up any given material, how to break it down into its raw minerals, and how to reassemble it into something new and stronger. The very base rule of science is something can only be made by sacrificing something of equal or greater value. In the rarest of cases people have been known to make something become nothing but never the other way. Science has done much good for countless people but at a terrible price as it takes away from one's soul. How can people continue to go about their lives when they know that at the touch of a button, an entire city can be vaporized?

On a world far away from our own, a world known as Aeta, these forces flourish. Magic and Science, accomplishing the same tasks but in completely different ways. Yeron, the nation of Scientists, with cities of towering skyscrapers, tramways weaving through the towers, giant air purifiers, and automated systems all made of steel and glass. Hais, a kingdom filled with Magicians and cities of sprawling marketplaces and palaces, caravans traveling between cities, enormous forests, and many creatures believed to only exist in myths. Our story takes place in the city called Dawn, a city of Yeron on the border of Hais and the war has not yet leveled this city.

About the Species on Aeta

Scientists

Human – The founders and only residents of Yeron. They are divided into the organics and cyborgs, a fact that still causes some friction between citizens. All military humans are genetically augmented to be free of any handicap and recover from any wound, up to and including a broken spine or minor brain damage. Some humans have been granted permission to utilize power suits.

Cyborg – An innovation of the human founders. Humans with cybernetic enhancements to overcome or eliminate any severe injury or physical handicap. Cybernetic limbs are powered by powerful batteries, vulnerable to electro-magnetic attacks and must be maintained but are difficult to break. Most Cyborgs are between eighteen and forty-six years old, the pain of the surgery is the main reason. Most Cyborgs are able to, and sometimes forced, to become Mecha pilots.

Artificial Intelligence – Most commonly called Androids or AI's, these superior machines are expensive but worth every cent. They come in two types, Warrior and Civilian, but both have the same capabilities. Warrior models are tall, bulky, and made to be intimidating. Civilian models are made to fit in to society, fake flesh and hair allow them to be completely unnoticed in a crowd. Most AI's tend to favor heavy weapons, though no one knows why. Military grade AI's can go three days with recharging.

Hybrid - Captured magicians that have been heavily experimented on and have neural implants to enforce their loyalty. Because of the mixture of experimental technology and magic, their powers have changed drastically. They now are able to manipulate Speed, Gravity, or Electricity

Magicians

Human – Although short-lived and vulnerable to just about everything, the other species look up to them. Humans can master any magic and finds new ways to use it, their creativity easily outshines the other species. It has been noted that humans tend to focus too much on either offense or defense and are relatively the most susceptible to magic addiction.

Winged – Graceful beings that have a tendency to see others as inferior. This species is most likely the origin of our images of Angels, Demons, and Fairies. All can fly for about an hour before their wings start to cramp which leads to falling to their death. The winged have difficulty mastering the power over earth or water but excel at using wind.

Fiend – Nightmares, the best way to describe this species. Vampires, Daemons and Lycans are the most noteworthy as the other races do not venture outside their lands. Our lore about both Vampires and Lycans is wrong, to say the least. Vampires are not affected by the sun but do feed off others to fuel their magic. Lycans are capable of taking on a bestial form but do succumb to their instincts. Daemons excel with dark magic but that does not mean they are evil. Fiends are incapable of using either light or fire magic.

Dragon - Massive creatures that can easily wield the most powerful magic and are immortal. Dragons generally try not to get involved in mortal issues and prefer to remain hidden. The Scientist forces have spent many decades trying to find and capture a dragon as they are the most mysterious creature they have ever encountered and never caught.

"Good," Dread says quietly as the text leaves his vision "No scavengers or Magicians found me," the tall machine pulls his power couplings off of the power cables running through the walls of the building "Objective? That's an interesting way of saying kill every savage within Dawn."

Dread reaches down and grabs the white painted weapon magnetically attached to his thigh. The sensors in his fingers detect the weapon, deactivating the magnets, releasing the safety, and bringing up a report on the weapon. [[Pulse-Grenade Launcher. Fires a canister of compressed plasma energy, which detonates on contact sending out a wave or pulse that can stun organic creatures for 1.3 seconds. Currently have 5 out of 10 shots loaded]] Dread dismisses it and lifts the weapon up before opening the door of the freezer of the restaurant he had taken refuge in to recharge.

After leaving the freezer and making sure the area between him and the front door is clear, Dread crosses the dining area and steps out onto the walkway. The walkway is one hundred and fifty-nine floors above solid ground but the towers of Dawn rise for another one to two hundred floors above the walkway. Dread turns right and starts to walk with purpose, making no effort to hide his presence.

His eyes wandered over the immense, sprawling marketplace filled with the familiar scents of spices, people, and magic. The people crowding the space began to dissipate as the sound of yelling began to fade into the background. Leo's feet seemed to move of their own accord as they left the market while roads turned to grass and dirt while shadows from the trees covered his face.

Soon nobody crowded his sides and the only sounds were the chirping of birds and the near silence of the wind. His smile slowly faded from his face while his hand reached to lightly touch his violin which was secured in a bag hanging from his back. Finally noticing where he had arrived, Leo looked at the high towers all made of steel and glass towering above the treetops.

"Interesting," Leo murmured under his breath, gazing at the cyborgs and people which walked through the web of pathways that connected the tall skyscrapers.
"Nothing sets them apart though." He said aloud, his thoughts turning to the simple, geometrically based buildings as a frown turned the corners of his lips.

Something close to a smile appeared on his face as he began to approach the city of Dawn, curiosity on his mind. Hais has been his home for all his life, he had never had a reason to go to Yeron...until now. A bitter laugh came from his mouth as he smirked, he knew he couldn't outrun memories but he could try to forget them as he took his first step in Dawn.

Sollemnis sat upon the roof of a small bookstore, arms resting casually on her knees. Her raven-feathered wings fluttered serenely by her sides, tugged by the gentle wind. Her gray eyes swept over the city of Dawn, observing silently. A small smile tugged at the corners of her pale lips, as she listened to the banter between two brothers as they strode down the wide street by the shop.

She twirled her necklace around two of her fingers, toying with it before finally pulling away from the conversation as the brothers put more distance between them and herself. She threw the enchanted jewelry around her neck and picked up the beaten-up book that rested beside her. This was the only book that had interested her in that little old store that sat underneath her.

Hmm, what secrets do you hold for me, o' ancient tome? She ran her slender fingers along the worn cover, inspecting it closely. No title? Curious, she flipped open to the first page, which displayed a rather complex-looking sketch of what appeared to be some kind of machine.

The wind, which had died down slightly, picked up again, pulling at the pages of the book and the tips of her wings. Interesting...

Dread's feet pounded on the walkway as he slowly traveled without a destination to aim for. The sound of the area, or rather, lack of sound is odd for Dread. For the past two months there was endless gunfire, explosions, torrents of water, erratic winds, and many other inexplicable happenings. He is sure that the battle between Scientists and Magicians has ended in District Thirty-Six, the residential district closest to Hais territory. If he was capable of feeling it, Dread would have been surprised that no more than three towers had been destroyed.

The large mechanical soldier detected an incoming signal and opened a channel to allow it.

“Unit J Seven Five Six Three,” a commanding male voice stated “Report to District Fifteen, suspicious persons have been found. Confirm acknowledgment, Seven Five Six Three”

“Unit J Seven Five Six Three confirming orders. En route to District Fifteen, Dawn Central Command,” Dread replied.

He made his way over to an automated sky-taxi and commanded it to fly over to District Fifteen, specifically the market plaza. The taxi weaved through the towers at an incredible speed and twenty minutes later the taxi was landing. Dread climbed out and swept his gaze over the area, detecting the standard I.F.F. microchip implants of each passing citizen. His digital map indicated the two closest stores to him, a general grocer shop up the path in front of him, and a bookstore to his left. Dread wondered where he should start his search.

Sollemnis tore through page after page, the small smile that played at her lips growing into a delighted, malicious grin. Yes! The damned machines won't know what's coming... One of her hands drifted away from the book, moving to gently stroke the gleaming silver edge of her beloved chakram. Finally, something that gave her an advantage in this war! She turned the page again and trailed her fingers along the faded sketch, then swore under her breath.
Sollemnis managed to appear calm on the outside, although on the inside she was frantic as her eyes searched the open pages. No, no, no! Why would you do this to me?! Every letter seemed to be randomly placed, every word making no sense. This writing was unfamiliar to her. It was encrypted.

Suddenly her elation seemed to fade, replaced by chills down her spine and goosebumps up her arms. The air no longer seemed vibrant and warm, the breeze no longer friendly. It felt like the temperature dropped a few degrees.

The mage's wings began to quiver uncontrollably and she pulled them close to her, wrapping herself in the ebony feathers. She clutched the book to her chest, shivering. Her gray eyes scanned the streets again, searching for the source of her sudden feeling of wrongness. Her eyes narrowed and she exhaled slowly. She imagined her breath coming out as a puff in the air, although the chills were most likely only hers. She slid the book into a satchel hanging from her belt and wrapped the chain of her necklace around her fingers as if to comfort her. She mentally reached out using the necklace's power, searching for any sound that seemed... out of place.

His eyes, filled with vague interest moved across the buildings and people which moved through the streets. Leo's eyes still held a hint of unnoticeable disapproval even as an easy smile stretched across his face. True, it wasn't as strained as the many fake smiles he's used over the years, but it still took some effort to hold. He had noticed this earlier though all the places were too similar. Really though, how could those scientists tell these buildings apart, he wondered with a shake of his head.

Boredom slowly beginning to take root, Leo resisted the urge to use some of his magic, if only to rile things up a bit. Looking for something to assuage his bout of boredom, he was surprised to catch a glimpse of wings, black wings. A smirk replaced his faked smile while his eyes shifted to the store which the black winged individual sat on.

"A bookstore huh?" He muttered under his breath as he appraised the store. It was a small place though it seemed slightly older than the newer, shiny buildings which surrounded it. Made sense considering all the technology these scientists made, he doubted any scientist even used books anymore. With a shrug of his shoulders, Leo pushed the door open, maybe the winged mage would come down from her perch.

The sound of a beeping alerted the old man which sat at the counter as Leo gazed around the bookstore with wide eyes. The books were all fairly old, most of them would be older then the building itself, he determined. No chance of boredom here, he decided with the quick flash of a real smile.

I was practicing a new spell. This time would work! It had to! And then an explosian went off and my hair was blown back and my expierament ruined. Darn it! The twelth time this had happened! I sighed and used air to clear out the stench. My lab was terribly ruined.Time to go back to the market. I grabbed my shoulder bag and walked out of my house. My hair was still blown back so I used Air to fix it to a normal looking. I wondered how my family was doing. They had left to go to the land of science. Leaving me, their poor magic interested daughter all alone. As I walke throught the market place I felt a strange air about it.
