I have no idea what I'm doing (DVD creation)

So, about a year ago, my family bought an HD camcorder. I have no idea how to make DVDs with the footage though. *sobs* My family of course expects me to burn them DVDs but I have no clue how or where to even start. I have 0 interest in this soft of thing. emotion_facepalm My mom has been bugging me for sooo looong to make her DVDs too. I just want to make her happy. emo

I've attempted multiple times with some shitty software the camcorder came with. Each time my DVDs are blank though.

WTF do I do? Can you recommend any free software for converting video files/burning dvds?

What do you people even do with your footage? I honestly have no idea if people even make home video DVDs. XD

does your computer even HAVE a dvd burner?
because you kind of need one of those.

and CD burners and DVD burners are two completely different bits of hardware
a DVD burner can burn DVDs and CDs
but a CD burner can't burn DVDs

Yeah. I'm pretty sure I do. It says "DVD multi recorder" and "DVD rewriteable" on my CD/DVD drive.
I've made ONE DVD from footage before, but it was on my old lap top. This one is pretty new. I lost the software I had used on the old lap top when I had to factory restore it to fix it for my little bro. emo

(Holy s**t. This lap top apparently also plays blurays. I had no idea. xd I've never even watched a bluray... burning_eyes )
