Welcome one and all to Professor Nellmara's Potions class! Together we will explore the magical potency of ingredients, mixing them into elixirs, cures, curses, all to beguile the mind. You will learn things here that no matter where you are in life these shall remain relevant and true (until of course, another potion's discovery but we'll catch that pixie as it comes by). So now, my only question that remains to be answered:

Are you ready to plunge into the unknown?

1.) My word is above all else. Question it and you will get burned...figuratively or literally depending upon the situation.
2.) Roleplay actively, I like seeing students post, makes me feel all nice and warm inside, but no disrupting of other student's potions. People can die and I don't want to be haunted.
3.) Do all homework and classwork in a timely manner.
4.) Follow all HPGoG's guild's rules and of course Gaia's as well.
5.) Respect your fellow classmates and leave all rivalries at the door.
6.) Above all else, potions is an exciting and complex ritual; just because of this do not think we cannot allow just a little fun now and then!

Professor Nellmara was seated at her desk looking through what looks to be trading cards from Chocolate Frogs. And it seems she's mumbling to herself about the different ones and negotiating with her penguin. "Now I know I promised you the cards but c'mon! These are really really rare! Please, just one? Just this one?" Apparently her penguin was having none of it for he squawked and ran away with them in his flippers. It was when she was about to run after him did she notice her first and second years come in looking slightly exasperated or out-right giggling. Why hello there m'dears! Now that you've completed your first potion you should feel slightly more comfortable around the hot fires and bubbling cauldrons. And today should be no different than your first! So have fun and now throwing!" She tapped the board and immediately words began to write themselves in chalk reading:

Pewter Levels: Herbicide Potion (or simply Herbicide) is a potion that kills or damages plants. It has a disgusting taste, and is not for human consumption, as it may lower the drinker's health.

APM Potion Ingredients for Herbicide Potion:

Lionfish spines: have extremely long and separated spines. Crushed into a powder, these spines can be used in healing potions, such as the Wiggenweld Potion. It is also an ingredient of the Herbicide Potion.

Standard Ingredient: The Standard Ingredient is a herb, or mixture of herbs, with many magical applications and properties that is used as an ingredient in potion-making.

Horklump Juice: Horklump juice is a substance extracted from Horklumps. It can be used in a range of healing potions, including the Wiggenweld Potion. One can purchase Horklump juice at one of the apothecaries in Diagon Alley.

Flobberworm Mucous: Flobberworm Mucus, also known as Flobberworm mucous, is a sticky and green substance that is extracted from the Flobberworm. This mucus is used to thicken potions and it is one of the vital ingredients to a Wiggenweld Potion.

MAKING THE HERBICIDE POTION
»Add 4 Lionfish spines to the mortar

»Crush into a rough powder using the pestle

»Add 2 measurements of Standard Ingredient to the mortar

»Crush into a rough powder

»Add 3 measures of the crushed mixture to your cauldron

»Wave your wand

»Leave to brew and return in 95 minutes

»Add 2 measures of Horklump juice to your cauldron

»Heat to a medium temperature for 10 seconds

»Add 2 blobs of Flobberworm Mucus to your cauldron while it's still on the heat

»Stir 4 times, clockwise

»Wave your wand to complete the potion

»Bottle and place completed potion on my desk

Professor Nellmara was talking to her third year Gryffindor niece making the poor girl blush, stammer and move restlessly the more she talked while her face stayed perfectly natural and neutral. When she sees her next group of older students walk in and smiles while dismissing her niece. Welcome, welcome students! I was very surprised and very happy with your last potions, so I would like you to keep up the good work for this week!" As her niece is about to run out she suddenly yells out "Oranges!" which causes the young girl to blush and stutter horribly while running out going "lalalalalalalalalalalalalala" Chuckling the professor claps and soon words are forming on the chalkboard reading:

Brass Levels: The Pepper-up Potion is used through out the cold and flu season by Madam Pomfrey constantly. Some of the symptoms students might suffer from are headaches, stomach upset, fever, congestion, coughing, aching joints, not able to sleep and just plain exhaustion.

APM Potion Ingredients for the Pepper-up Potion:

Borage: It is usually classified as a diuretic, so it is used for colds, fevers and lung complaints.

Fennel: One can use the seeds or root for a fever and pain reducer. Fennel is known to attack a fever faster then any other herb. It can be used to calm and soothe aches in your muscles.

Geranium: This plant can help clear the mind and body of bad spirits, while another quality is it can stabilize emotions and helps to calm the weary.

Peppermint razz eppermint has long been used in healing lotions and potions. For a long period in history, it was used in protection spells, wards and as an aid to sleep. Excellent for upset stomachs.

MAKING PEPPER-UP POTION:

»All ingredients are set on our work table.

»We must use about a 2 tablespoons of dried, thin little blue flowers from the Borage. The flowers need to be crushed into a powder.

»Our cauldron, with 2 cups of water, needs to have a low flame allowing a slow simmer for our ingredients.

»One tablespoon of Fennel seeds are crushed and grounded into a powder.

»Next about one teaspoon of dried pink Geranium flowers need be crushed and ground into a powder.

»Our last ingredient is Peppermint. Five dried green leaves must be ground into a powder, making about one teaspoon full.

»All the ingredient must be added together to the low simmering water, stirring occasionally over 3 hours time.

»The fire must be removed from under the cauldron and the contents poured through a strainer into a large mug.

»Finally the Pepper-up Potion should be drank while it is still hot. (not boiling)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Professor Nellmara, having stopped multiple House Elves from dragging her away from the classroom all of the exclaiming that she hadn't eaten today, went over to her desk and pulled out a dark dusty bottle and was about to uncork it when she sees her oldest students walk in. She quickly hides the bottle beneath her desk and cross her legs while trying (and failing) to look innocent. "Ello Duckies! It would seem were at another week and another wonderful potion needing to be produced! I hope this week you won't disappoint!" She taps the chalkboard with the tip of her boots and the chalk floats up and begins writing out instructions reading:

Copper Levels: The Ageing Potion is a potion which causes the drinker to become older. Whether this is in body only or in body and mind is unclear. It is clear, however, that the more of the potion is drunk, the larger the aging which occurs. The effects of this potion are to be temporary.
A most famous use of the potion occurred when Fred and George Weasley and Lee Jordan attempted to use it to enter the Triwizard Tournament when they were still underage. Dumbledore had placed an Age Line around the Goblet of Fire to prevent anyone under the age of seventeen from approaching it. Hermione Granger warned Fred and George that the Age Line wouldn't be fooled by an Ageing Potion because Dumbledore himself made the age line and was convinced that Dumbledore would have thought of an Ageing Potion in advance. Fred, George and Lee thought however that an Ageing Potion would be enough to fool the Age Line magic, but they were wrong. Fred and George were ejected forcefully back over the line and both sprouted long white beards for their trouble. Lee, much to his relief, never attempted to cross the line and so escaped such humiliation. S. Fawcett and Summers also tried to use the potion to age themselves to be eligible for the Tournament, and both also grew white beards from the Age Line.

On this occasion, George reported that they had taken only a single drop of potion each, as they only needed to increase their age by a few months. This indicates that the more of the potion is drunk, the larger the degree of aging that occurs. It is also clear, however, that other magic can see through the effects of this potion, as Dumbledore's Age Line proved.

APM Potion Ingredients for the Ageing Potion:

Alder Buckthorn: The bark is used in ageing potions and skele-gro. (since this plant is used for the Ageing Potion, it most likely was used by Fred and George)

Pennyroyal: This herb is used for protection, as It causes a shield and repels negativity. It can also calm the mind and nerves. Pennyroyal should NOT be consumed by woman who are pregnant. (this herb would protect the drinker, keep him/her calm while the potion took effect and not immediately reverse them back to their true age)

Psyllium: This plant can help to thicken potions.

Vitex: This plant can be used in aging potions. It is responsible for beard growth and also turning hair white. (this surely was used by Fred and George and they probably didn't realize what its effect would be)

Yucca: The stalk and roots are useful in potions to help stop growth. (of course they would not want to keep growing older, so using this plant to stop ageing was a must)

MAKING THE AGEING POTION:

»We gathered the 5 ingredients.

»The Alder Buckthorn bark needs to be crushed into a powder.

»Continuing, the Pennyroyal must be sliced into tiny pieces.

»The Yucca has to be chopped up and diced into very small squares.

»Now the Vitex plant must be crushed into a powder.

»A measured teaspoon of each ingredient needs to be stirred into a preheated cauldron. One cup of water had been brought to a boil just before the herbs and plants were added. The fire under the cauldron must be lowered so the potion can stew for an hour. When the hour is up the final ingredient, Psyllium (the leaves are crushed into a powder) has to be added to thicken the Ageing Potion. Remove the fire from under the cauldron and allow the potion to cool at room temperature.

»Finally the mixture must be poured through a strainer and then poured into a non-breakable flask.

»A proper size cork needs to be placed in the opening.

»It should be kept at room temperature and used within one months time.

CAUTION: Adult use only!

Professor Nellmara is seated behind her desk with her hand tangled in her hair randomly pulling leaves out while she perused a magazine that looked to cater for...penguins? When she noticed his first year students coming in she immediately stood and put away the magazine. "Good day children and welcome to your first potion lesson! Today we will be learning the most basic potion, the ingredients used and their proper use as well as brewing the potion. I don't expect perfection, you're still young but it shouldn't stop you from trying!" Her grin was infectious as she clapped and soon fires were lit at each station and the board was filled with neat handwriting reading:

Pewter Levels: The Cure for Boils (also known as simply Boil Cure) is a potion which cures boils. It is an elementary potion taught to first year students at Hogwarts.
When brewing the potion, the cauldron must be taken off the fire before adding the porcupine quills, or, as Neville Longbottom found out, the cauldron will melt and create a horrid odour, and if it spills will cause the skin to erupt in vicious boils.

APM Potion Ingredients for Boils Cure Potion:

Flobberworm Mucus: A sticky and green substance that is extracted from the Flobberworm. This mucus is used to thicken potions and it is one of the vital ingredients to a Wiggenweld Potion.

Nettle: A widespread plant known for the stinging hairs that grows on his leaves. Nettles are used in potion-making: fresh nettles are used in the Boil-Cure Potion, whereas dried nettles are used in the Herbicide Potion. Nettles are presumably the main ingredients of beverages like Nettle wine and Nettle tea.

Snake fangs: When crushed, are an ingredient used in the preparation of some potions, like Herbicide Potion, the Strength Potion and the Boil-Cure Potion. This plentiful ingredient must not be harvested from venomous snakes.

Porcupine quills: The sharp spines revesting porcupines, defending them from predators. Porcupine quills are plentiful since the animals continually replenish them. Quills that have caused no harm are considered the best by potion-makers. Porcupine quills are an ingredient to several potions, like the Boil-Cure Potion and the Herbicide Potion.

Horned slugs: A type of a slug that, when stewed, are used as an ingredient in the Boil-Cure Potion.

MAKING THE BOILS CURE POTION:

»Heat the cauldron until the water boils

»Pour Flobberworm Mucus until the potion turns pink.

»Add 6 Snake Fangs to the mortar.

»Crush into a fine powder using the pestle.

»Add 4 measures of the crushed fangs to your cauldron.

»Heat the mixture to high flame for 15 seconds

»Lower flame and leave to simmer for 45 minutes

»Mix the dried nettles until it turns green.

»Add 4 horned slugs to your cauldron.

»Mix horned slugs until the potion turns pink.

»Take the cauldron off the fire before adding the next ingredient.

»Add 2 Porcupine Quills to your cauldron.

»Stir 5 times, clockwise.

»Ladle out potion into vial then tightly cork

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Professor Nellmara was currently pulling a rather small but energetic penguin from one of her more larger cauldrons. "Pengoo! What have I told you about coming in here during school hours?! It's dangerous! Ooo, just you wait! No kippers for a whole m-well hello there!" She looks up embarrassingly to find an audience of 4th and 5th year students. "Welcome returning students to potions class! I've already been informed some of you haven't taken a lesson before but rest assured I don't look for perfection just dedication! Today we'll be doing a rather simple potion that would probably most assuredly be on the OWL's" The professor chuckled when she saw a few start scratching away on parchment for notes. "Now, on to business then!" She clapped her hands once and soon all fires were lit and words began forming on the blackboard reading:

Brass Levels: The Blood-Replenishing Potion is a potion that tops up the blood levels of the drinker after blood loss from injury or otherwise. We have read that Mr. Weasley was required to use this potion to help counter the effects from Voldemort's snake, Nagini's, attack. He was treated with this very special potion, while he recovered in St. Mungo's Hospital.

APM Potion Ingredients for the Blood-Replenishing Potion:

Five-Finger Grass: By using the leaves and root, when made as a tea, this herb can help stop nosebleeds almost instantly. For internal bleeding the bark is to be used. Warning though, it must be ingested without adding any other substances.

Cinnamon Twig:When using the branches or the twigs, helps promote the circulation of the blood for better brain power.

Echinacea: The roots can be placed in potions, which can help prevent infections and boost the immune system.

Rosemary: This wonderful plant can be used in cleaning and purifying potions. Rosemary can rid someone or something of negativity or dark magic. Excellent when used in healing and sleeping draughts.

Yellow Gentian: Can be used in blood replenishing potions and potions for liver problems.

MAKING BLOOD-REPLENISHING POTION:

»All the ingredients have been placed on our work table.

»The cauldrons fire must be high and the water boiling (about 2 cups of water).

»The Five-Finger Grass bark needs to be stripped, chopped and crushed into a power. One teaspoon must then be placed in a tea strainer and needs to brew in boiling water for 10 minutes. (Part 1 of this potion)

»A half dozen Cinnamon twigs must be grounded into a fine powder. One table spoon needs to be added to the cauldrons boing water.

»The handful of the needle shape Rosemary must be dropped into our cauldron and stirred slowly.

»Echinacea roots are next and need to be sliced into small pieces and stirred quickly into the now forming potion.

»A dozen of the thin bright yellow leaves of the Yellow Gentian must be crushed and folded into the boiling water.

»The fire under the cauldron must be reduced to a very low simmer for one hour.

»Removed cauldron from the fire and allow the potion to cool.

»Finally the liquid contents of the cauldron must be strained into a large mug. (Part 2 of this potion)

* Remember The Five-Finger Grass tea (Part 1) which has been brewed MUST be cooled and drank FIRST from a shot glass. Fifteen minutes later our Blood-Replenishing Potion (Part 2) needs to be warm and swallowed down quickly.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Professor Nellmara, having gotten rid of her penguin, was now sitting behind her desk comparing two samples of potions both looking wildly different than the other. "Hmph. Swear that's the last time I let myself be swindled by a guy who can pull galeons outta people ears...well hello!" She looks up to see much older group of students, 6th or 7th years. "Welcome to NEWT potions! We'll be having a lot of fun with these that you'll be making this year, since nearly all of them we either on your OWL's or will me on your NEWT's. Since you are my older group of students I will still say I don't expect perfection, but I do expect something close to it! Now, let the games begin!" She clapped one and the fires were lit and the blackboard began forming words reading:

Copper Levels: Amortentia is the most powerful Love Potion in the entire world. It causes a powerful infatuation or obsession in the drinker. It has a distinctive mother-of-pearl sheen, and steam rises from it in characteristic spirals.
It has a different aroma for everyone who smells it, reminding each person of the things that they find most attractive, even if the person themselves don't acknowledge or are unaware of their fondness for the object of their affection e.g. Hermione Granger smells fresh cut grass, new parchment and Ron Weasley's hair. Harry Potter smelled treacle tart, a broomstick, and "something flowery that he thought he might have smelled at the Burrow" (which he later realised as the smell of Ginny Weasley's hair). Ron Weasley smelled his mother's cooking, bacon and the perfume he gave Hermione in their 5th year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for Christmas.

"Amortentia doesn't create actual love, of course. That's impossible. But it does cause a powerful infatuation or obsession. For that reason, it is probably the most dangerous potion in this room."
—Horace Slughorn while in Potion class in 1996.

The effects of the potion on a person are described to be near instantaneous; with the person who drank the potion appearing "pale and sickly," and becoming obsessed with the object of their affections, speaking of them as though "hit by a ray of purest sunlight," and becoming excited or dangerously unstable towards others.
The potion must be administrated continuously in order to maintain the false love in the drinker. Otherwise, as with Merope Gaunt and Tom Riddle Sr., the effects will wear off and the victim would regain their own free will.

Etymology
Amor is a Roman god of love, and the word "Amor" in Latin means "Love."
"Tentia" is also Latin for "held." Not only that, but "temtia" is Italian for "attempts."

APM Potion Ingredients for the Amortentia Potion:

Jobberknoll Feathers: The feathers will be cooked and the liquid will be used. These feathers have long been used to attract love.

Apple: The juice of the apple pulp will be used. It is one of the main ingredients for a love potion.

Ginger: The powder of this spice will be added to our potion. It is mainly used in love spells or potions.

Lavender: These purple flowers will be dried and crushed into a fine powder. Lavender is known to be used to attract love.

Olive: The small green olives will be squeezed and their oil will be used. The Olive is a most powerful love generating ingredient.

Liquorice: This sweet flavored purplish/blue flowered herb is used only in love potions.

MAKING THE AMORTENTIA LOVE POTION:

»All our ingredients have been laid out on our work table.

»Our cauldron must be half filled with water and brought to a boil.

»The Jobberknoll Feathers, half a dozen feathers, need to be added first to the boiling water. They have to cook on a high boil for one hour. The water needs to cool and then poured through a fine strainer into a bowl and then added back into the empty cauldron.

»The fire must be set on low to create a low simmering liquid.

»One large apple, must be peeled, cored and the pulp smashed and forced through fine strainer. The liquid must then be added to the boiling water.

»One teaspoon of Ginger powder needs to be dropped into the cauldrons water and stirred quickly, being sure it dissolves.

»The dried purple Lavender flowers, about a half cup, have to be crushed into a fine powder. One tablespoon must be stirred slowly into the simmering potion. The steam from our simmering potion is rising in spirals.

»Four small Olives need to be squeezed and their juice poured a few drops at a time into the simmering now almost complete potion.

»At this point the liquid from the olives has given our potion a mother-of-pearl sheen.

»Our Liquorice flowers must have been dried and crushed into a fine powder.

»Two teaspoons of the powder is gently folded and dissolved into the potion, immediately giving off a different smell to each student, as well as the professor in the class.

»The Amortentia Potion must be cooled and then placed in a tightly corked bottle.

CAUTION: Adult use only!

EXTRA CREDIT ANNOUNCEMENT
For those of you who want to see what it is your doing I've found it! This site will take you to a potions game, where you have a choice of creating any type of potion, learning different potion formulas, or auto-brewing. For Pewter I'd like you to get to Level 2 on your own with no auto brew and once done PM you points and write what ingredients you most used and what happened when you used them. Copper I'd like you to do the same thing, only to get to Level 3 without auto-brew. Once you've done as I've asked feel free to play around and see if you can do some of the auto-brew formulas manually! So, go forth and brew young potion-teers!
