The gym at my local community college isn't all that great. It does have two saving features. A pool and a gym with a tread mill.

I generally spend 30 Minutes in the pool doing laps - and walk a mile on the treadmill. However, the mile walk isn't making me sweat. I can walk it at 30 MPH and it won't effect me.

So what should I do? Walk more than a mile? Instead of a mile, walk for 30 Minutes - it takes 20 Minutes for me to walk a mile? Or should I add more pool time?

Advice?

Maybe you should walk more than a mile?

Swimming is kind of a better exercise in general so maybe do it a little more often. Make sure you push yourself. Also, at a certain point, walking just stops being effective. It ups your metabolism but it doesn't actually burn a lot of calories at all. For me, walking is more for maintaining weight than losing it. I'd add several one or two minute bursts throughout your walk, and go by time instead of distance. I go on the elliptical for more or less a half an hour a few times a week and it keeps me losing weight. Seriously though if you wanna lose weight and get yourself in better shape, switching from walking to jogging, or at least jog/walk intervals is probably the most effective thing you can do, plus swimming a bit more.

You didn't say how often you work out but pushing yourself to go every single day won't give your body any time to heal, which is bad, but not going enough just isn't really consistent enough to work. Ideally I'd say work out 3-5 days a week. I should be doing that but I'm lame and lazy and suck at taking my own advice. Haha.

Now that the pool's operation certificate belongs to my college, I'm going to try to go to the pool and treadmill during the weekdays. I can't get to the college on the weekends because I don't drive.

But 3 - 5 times a week sounds fine. Any more imput?

Well, make sure you drink 8-10 glasses of water every day and don't eat a lot of junk food and you should be fine 3nodding

I think swimming is a better form of exercise because it works out every muscle, especially if you swim laps back and forth for 30 mins. That'll be a really good workout. Also, if one mile doesn't make you sweat anymore, then do two miles. Maybe alternate every other day? I try to alternate walking and running on different days. It seems to work fine for me.

I say don't worry if something isn't making you sweat, how is your pulse? Make sure as you exercise that the tread mill is putting your pulse up to a good speed. The swimming is also one of the best physical exercise you can do, so make sure you keep doing that.

But I do believe, if you have the time to, add an extra half mile or quarter of mile onto the threadmill. Or go a whole mile, to walk 2 miles all together. This is a great way to keep pushing yourself. smile

Walk faster and, if your treadmill has this feature, increase the incline. Walking can be great exercise, but you're still have your heart rate up and you should be breathing hard. If you can easily hold a conversation, you're not putting out much effort. Aim for walking fast enough that you're having to take a breath every few words, but talking is still possible.
