I'm changing my major to Art & Technology this Autumn. Because of the fact that I never really imagined that I would actually PURSUE an art-based major, I never really bothered building up a decent portfolio. Buuut, now that I am... I need some stuff for it.
That being said, I would love some ideas. I won't be starting this week most likely due to finals, but I will be doing it soon.
Not just avatar art. Not just anime styled. I can't do anything amazing, but I need to expand my horizons anyways.
So I would love all of you gals if you just help me make a list of possible things. It could be a vague as saying "A flower," as silly as saying "A mutant toilet," or as specific as "A little girl sitting atop a tree stump in her Sunday best holding a small plush cat while watching the sunset."
Anything helps, really. And since this would be the source of ideas, it would only be fair if I posted the final projects here once they're done. Even if I don't like them. (I need to kill my bad habit of tossing something I'm not satisfied with.)
So... Thanks for at least reading. I hope to see some of your ideas soon...

That... Sounds really, really cool, actually. Thank you for your idea~ It'll be fun thinking of how that could be done...

If you're going to be building a portfolio, make sure you have a few drawings from life. Seriously, the best, most detailed drawings from life you have ever done. You might want to show that you have some skills in digital art, and several other media as well. Paint [oil, acrylic, watercolor], pastels, charcoal, pencil, markers, whatever you can think of! Maybe some design stuff, too...like perspetive drawings and other things like that, even as simple as a zen garden. In fact- that's my idea for you. A zen-type garden with slight rolling hills, smooth rock paths, green plants/bushes all around, a stone chinese dragon statue hiding amongst the bushes somewhere, maybe a few locusts or grasshoppers or lightning bugs floating about. Or not. Just make sure you are showing them the variety of things you can do.

Old people. Re-interpret a mythological creature into something totally new. Hummingbirds. Draw a person drawing a person drawing a person drawing etc. You could either make them all look the same or have the people get progressively younger, i.e. an old man drawing a middle-aged woman drawing a teenage boy drawing a young girl drawing a baby. A person jumping out of a body of water. A pink-themed drawing. Try something reminiscent of Graeme Base's drawings. (He did Animalia, The Eleventh Hour, etc. Basically ridiculously detailed drawings with lots of stuff hidden in them.) Draw from life a lot.

An old pickup truck on the side of the road. A living room after a birthday party. A woman holding a newborn baby. A girl in school, watching the clock. A cat in a tree. A (little?) girl getting her eyes pierced. A family portrait. A girl getting her braided. Empty swings.

Suggestions-
A kid with his hand in a cookie jar (the old fashioned kind) being caught by his mom or dad
A birthday party, with everyone happy except one person, (perhaps the birthday kid)
A teenager in school drawing a picture of a girl on a single swingset
A dolphin coming out of the water
two friends walking home
Some are really specific, some not so much, take your pic smile

Art programs love to see drawings from life. Love. It. They also like variety and expertise in a variety of mediums and subjects. Landscapes, portraits, still lifes for showing chops. But make them interesting and your own, you know? Not the cookie cutter charcoal drawing of a teapot or something. Show them what you like to do, and what you can do. Stuff from imagination can be used to show what you like to do most, but depending on the program, they might like drawings from life more or weigh it the same as stuff from your head. haha I wish you luck heart I think people who decide to pursue art are amazing. You have to be really determined. It's mostly hard work, only a little part of it is talent.

A few drawings showing those things you notice about someone you like. Their eyes. Their lips. The way their hair sits.
Small real world details. Tangled headphones. Condensation on a glass.
A girl getting ready for a date Interpret this how you like <3

I began to run towards that one big dream Because my good friends were with me, I did my best This can be fun, and I'll post more later, but:
~An apple falling from a tree ~A young girl singing along with her favorite song while driving in the country ~You can use my post style any way you want XD ~Maybe emotions, as in, what do you picture happy to look like? Or sad, angry, jealous, etc. ~You can try designing something, like a really detailed car, a guitar, clothes, etc. ~An old, Victorian-styled dress ~Carnations that have been dyed different colors ~A girl dressed in black placing flowers on a grave ~A child afraid on their first day of Kindergarden Even if there's a high wall in our way, we're not stopping We'll break it down and go on towards our dream

Try drawing some inanimate stuff. That will help show your diversity and skill but not just plain boring still life. . .
Something like surreal still life, like a drawing leaving a paper to come to life, or draw the scenery of a fantasy world, not just mythical and magical but something modern and alien.
