In japanese anime, before the advent of the DVD player, their was always the debate of whether to buy a subtitled tape or a dubbed tape. Still the debate continues with which is better in this age of better english voice actors, and the more widely avalible variety of anime for the modern viewer.
Personally, although there are a few anime I feel the dubbing captures the spirit of the characters better (Like Outlaw Star) overall I would have to stand firmly on the subtitle side of the debate. The translations are truer to the original intent instead of changing phrasing or word lengths to sync up better with the lip movement, and japanese voice actors/actresses still seem to be of a higher calibur that most current anime dubbing studios. I much perfer to hear things as they were originally intended in with subtitles for me since i don't speak the language enough to follow.
So, what are your thoughts and opinions?

I actually prefer dubbing because i dont like to read when i watch anime. I read slow so sometimes i miss things and i'm always having to pay attention to the words and not the movie. Although when things are dubbed horribly like dbz where theyre constantly talking about happiness and friendship all the time it really pisses me off. Although im not really sure what the original said because i havent seen it i'm pretty sure they didnt talk about stupid s**t like happiness, friendship, teamwork etc. ALL THE ******** TIME! *angry* So it really depends on the anime. Sometimes i like dubbed sometimes subbed.

I now I was super-pissed when Naruto finally arrived on YTV and the freaking dubbing was CRAP. All the names were totally screwed up, and Naruto sounded like a girl. This is why, is most cases, I stick to subtitles. It doesn't bother me to check the video and wording at the same time, and its makes the experience more authentic. Besides, I know a little Japanese, so I can pick up on the wording a bit.
The FLCL dubbing was awesome though, best I ever heard.

I can go both ways. Depends on what mood I'm in. I have tried to learn Japanese a few times now because I'm to damn lazy to read the damn subtitels. More often I will turn to the dubbed show then the dubbed because of this. I do think its kinda funny to watch the same show back to back, one sub then dub, Like the sailor moon movies. Wow, that will mess your a** up. I mean like wow, two almost completly diffrent movies. This isn't a problem just in anime. This is a problem with other real actor movies, comics, books, any thing else thats translated into another language.

I prefer dubbing, but only in certain things. For example, I'd NEVER watch Blood, The Last Vapire dubbed.

spooky_sez I prefer dubbing, but only in certain things. For example, I'd NEVER watch Blood, The Last Vapire dubbed. I can't watch battle royale dubbed, its just not the same. Even though the dubbing is so off I still prefer it that way. Its like you don't even need to know what there saying in that movie because there all such good actors.

I am fortunate enough to be able to speak Japanese, but if not I would definitely want subtitles instead of dubbing. Too often dubbing changes the show, and I prefer to see it the way it was made.

I cannot speak Japanese, or read it, fluently. I do have a teacher that teaches me the language, but as usual studying is not easy for me to do even IF it's Japan-related. I like to see both sides of an anime: dub and sub. The manga also comes of interest. It's hard for me to see the sub version of the animes I like, because of my 'addictions'. This often results in having to make sacrifices so I can make room for better things. More on the topic, the sub is a lot more entertaining. The dubs need to stop with the lame speeches! I'm sick of them! SICK! I prefer dubs now that I know I can live with them. It's really a long story. If you wish to hear it, PM me. My PMs are on for everyone on and off my friendslist. I don't want to miss a good chance to make a new friend. The Internet is INDEED a good thing. Besides, with subs all I have to do is skip through all the boring parts.

Subtitles are the only way to watch anime in my opinion, though I must admit Outlaw Star is better with dubbing-Aesha Clan Clan sounds like a high- pitched monotone valley girl who is entirely too sweet for her own good...no offence to the Japanese voice actress. Her voice is better suited to Leena Inverse, really, or the sewing doll from Rosin Maiden.

depends on the series and production company with me. for example: 4Kids= CRAP Funimation= not as crappy (I liked the YYH dub) ADV= good from what I've seen (Saiyuki)
what REALLY pisses me off is when they change entire storylines, personalities, etc. 4Kids is famous for this, I do believe (Shaman King, etc. totally botching OnePiece- THE RAP, IT BURNS!! gonk ) But what REALLY angred me was when they decided to have a different production company and different voices for Saiyuki Reload than they had for Saiyuki- which is why I will NEVER watch the Reload dub EVER. Naruto, what pisses me off is Naruto's voice, not to mention him saying BELIEVE IT at least 2 times every fuggin episode!! scream But I thought Sasuke's voice wasn't too bad, and Kakashi's... Lee's voice....no....they f**ked that up...BADLY... *shudder* that's all I have to say on this subject for now...

I kinda like both; but like others have said before, it depends what I watch.... Hellsing - dubb and subb, I also like the subb on youtube too. Yugioh - dubb, b/c on the sub the reading is way too fast for me; and I miss too much of the episode/movie. So, it all depends on what I'm watching mostly, oh and on the FMA movie, I like the sub better. 3nodding

Subs, I like the way Japanese sounds and dubbing almost usually equal to crap. XD The Jappos do their characters better, IMO.
