I say that we've gone pretty long without really having a thread for metal. Perhaps too long. But I think we can make this work now. Together. I believe in you.

What should you do here? Well you can:
Tell me about your favorites genres of metal.
Your favorite bands.
Show off all your cool knowledge about the genre.
Talk about news related to metal.
New releases.
All the metal information you feel is appropriate.

Sounds easy, right? But are there any special rules?
We'll start with one easy rule. We are not counting Nu-Metal as metal in this thread.
That means Slipknot and Korn are a nono.

Metalcore (As I Lay Dying, Lamb of God) talk is acceptable, but it is still the redheaded stepchild of the whole lot.

Alright. Now it's time to talk about me.

My favorite genres, and a few examples:

Sludge
Neurosis, Isis, Jesu, Boris, Pelican

Stoner
Sleep, Kyuss, Bongzilla, Orange Goblin, Electric Wizard

Grindcore
Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Anaal Nathrakh, Genghis Tron, Pig Destroyer

I'd say Drone was one of them, but the only Drone band I really like is Earth.

What am I excited for? No idea.
I can never keep up with news about album releases, and all that.
There are about a billion good releases from last year alone, which I have yet to go through.

I'm not a huge metal fan. I don't sit and dabble in which subgenre of metal do the metal bands I like belong to.

I'm really into the old metal like Metallica, Iron Maiden and Megadeth.

But the newer stuff I like is:
- Amon Amarth
- Agathodaimon
- Virgin Black
- Children of Bodom
- Moonsorrow

If symphonic metal is counted then:
- Nightwish [old]
- Epica
- Kamelot
- Within Temptation

Other than that. No.

I'll say this and I'll say this only once as a life long metaller... especially as you find its only really the teenagers that got into it when they were 14 that do it;

STOP MAKING UP NEW GENRES OF METAL!

Also.. why aren't we counting Korn and Slipknot as metal?
Is this the hard rock debate again? Because Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest are all considered metal, yet are much much softer then Korn and Slipknot in sound. So enlighten me, what crazy a** rules have you ******** made up about my genre to judge what is and isn't metal?

Is Soulfly metal? What about Skindredd? Some say yes, some say no. Is folk metal with a focus on the folk metal or folk music in this sense? What about symphonic metal with a focus on the symphony, is that metal? Or how about this brain teaser, where do Apocalyptica fit into this grand scheme of things?

Thats the problem with you metal elitest ********, you assume you have the last say on whats what, well you aren't a metal fan if thats your concern, your the same kind of pompous pricks that sit in their ivory tower and discuss how Napalm Death takes a similar note structure from Vivaldi. Whislt us real metal fans are at the base of the tower, we don't care, if its loud and angry and aggressive, its metal, we're roasting pigs on a spit, have many kegs of ale and all in all are actually more concerned with the enjoyment of the music then classifying it.

Sorry if I come off as the last angry metaller here, but this is my ******** genre, its what I've been listening too since before I was even born thanks to my mother and its what I've grown up loving and learning and discovering about. I'm not about to have someone who hasn't even been a fan of the stuff for a decade tell me what is and isn't metal based on some completely obfuscated and needless genre heirarchy.

I wondered the same thing. I was going to list Slipknot until I read that OP said no. :<

I don't listen to metal much any more, but I like the bands that have positive energy in them. Mostly bands that belong in power, symphonic or heavy metal.

I like: Tierra Santa, Freedom Call, Blind Guardian, After Forever, Within Temptation, Rata Blanca, Liva, Sonata Arctica, Avantasia and similar.

Btw. I always thought that Led Zep were hard rock.

Metal is the genre I do the least nitpicking about when it comes to subgenres.
Here I thought this could all be avoided by not calling Genghis Tron Cybergrind, or calling Electric Wizard Stoner/Doom.
Leaving out Nu-metal has to do partially with the genre fights issue. It's always the same argument about whether or not it counts as metal, which is a dull argument.
One that completely ignores the larger problem, which is that it pretty much all sucks.
And of course I didn't know metal was your genre, relik.

The 'genres are s**t and it doesn't matter' opinion also sucks. It's obviously ridiculous to go 'oh, it's a goth inspired post hardcore insturmental emo band with space rock influences and a definite case of self aware hip hop imitation'. But it's just as ridiculous to go, 'Man, music is beyond classification. Subgenres and genres and all that can go. It's all about how it makes you feel'.
No one is ever made completely happy by genres, which matters not at all, 'cause I'm pretty sure that's not what genres there are for.
I guess you can believe that listening to something for a long time will make you an authority on all aspects of it. Does that logic also apply to other things? Because I've been watching Blue's Clues for quite some time. Can I now claim it's classified as historical fiction, or do I have to say that it is beyond all that and people who disagree just never really understood Blue's Clues to begin with?

In short, don't be such a square, gramps.

I'm fan of Post Metal.
It's a legit metal genre.
Although it may as well be slightly harder Post Rock.

My arguement is there are a handful of actual metal genres, Metal, Heavy, Death, Rap, Folk and Extreme and between those few it runs the entire gamut, do we really need bands that are 'darkened deathly doom grind metal'? That is my point.
My other point is, I hate this over classification and over analysis of music, it isn't needed.

As for your Blues Clues comment, you couldn't claim to be a historian with it, but you could claim to be a Televisual Popular Culture Specialist Within The 3-8 Demographic. If you want to be technical. My point though is that do we need a new sub-genre everytime someone plays a chord differently? The answer is no we don't.

I believe part of my point was that we do not need to go to the stoopid with, 'darkened deathly doom grind metal'. There doesn't have to be a new subgenre added for that one band where that one guy does something weird. But it becomes necessary after a point to give different ways of playing different names.
The genres I have chosen to use in my above post are are not overly ridiculous. They're a lot less ridiculous than I could have made them, but I don't think they have to be any more complex in this case. unless you're going to act like genres that are not overly broad are not useful, t
If you were going to fit every metal band ever into six genres, it would be a lot more difficult for people to actually find the bands they were interested in. No one would bother, if that wasn't the case. It's why those other lovely genres are so useful.

Also, this is why I don't like things that look like they'll become 'try to repeat yourself in a new way until the other agrees' arguments. If I'd rather sleep in a pile of tissues than respond, it's just not worth it.
Say something extra retarded in your next post so that it's fun again, or we may have to prematurely agree to disagree on this.

i hope you're proud of yourself.
