You don't have to ask him in a full on way and scare him, just try casually. (This makes a no a little easier too)

Instead of just flat out saying "Will you go out with me?" (An exclusive contract between the two of you effective immediately)

"Do you want to go see x movie with me on saturday?" (And maybe I'll flirt a bit or even try to kiss you afterwards and we'll see how it goes from there).

If you are happy with it then stay with it. It doesn't make you weird, it can be kind of romantic and spontaneous not to go with the norm of relationships.
