I'm not a supporter of ELF or ALF though. I don't know why you guys would support some of these... not so bright people. Good intentions? Sure. Thinking things through? Not really. Releasing thousands of mink into the "wild" without thinking of the repercussions on the local ecosystem, plant, or animal life? Yeah, smooth. wink

there might be a few idiots with good intentions who release lab/fur/other animals into the wild, but for the MOST part these animals are taken care of.

Plus, not all of these people are ALF/ELF related.
Keven Kjonaas, for example, was given 6 years for posting information on a website, and organizing protests. For this, he is considered a terrorist. I know you can STAB somebody and serve less time in jail than what he got. That AETA is some serious bullshit.

EDIT: but just to make it clear, I actually DO support ALF and other animal rights groups. It's painfully obvious that our system does NOT work, and that became even more clear when the AETA was passed in order to "protect" animal researchers and other disgusting groups from the big bad protesters (or more specifically, their organizers) that might cut into their profits.

Just because something is illegal (like freeing animals) doesn't make it wrong. And just because something is legally protected (like cutting up living animals) doesn't make it right. I know that there are some people that feel like the law should be followed no matter what, but I happen to agree with Thoreau when he said "If the machine of government is of such a nature that it requires you to be the agent of injustice to another, then, I say, break the law."
