So I shall now discuss how my army began and where it is going in the future.
At the local game store called Jame's and Games, I saw that they had a Warhammer 40,00 starter kit. Now it was my first time there, and I had just earned graduation money, so I really got it in a spur of the moment kind of thing along with what paint I figured I would need for the kit. So after blowing a total of 120 dollars on glue, painting and the Warhammer 40,000 starter kit with Orks and Marines, I talked to the owner, and he said anytime I would like I could come in and practice playing my armies and his battlefield that he had set up in the store, which seemed vacant most of the time sense people only came there for Magic(I have a deck of Magic so that is still fun for me) and Yu-gi-oh(Use to like, have a few of the old cards laying around, but not interested in it much).
The Kit itself comes with ten tactical marines 1 being a Sarge, 5 terminators with another being a sarge, 1 Dreadnought, 1 Captain, 20 Boyz, 5 Nobz, 1 Warboss, and 3 def koptas.
So sense it was late at night, my friends wanted to go to Denny's and I brought the box in with me so I can take a better look at it. And before we knew it, my army of Space Marines and Orks were fully assembled.....at 1 Am at Denny's(And one of my friends managed to glue one of the model stands to the table).
We left some time after because the bars had closed, so naturally all the drunk Valley girls came into Denny's screeching like the Banshee's seeing their favorite celebrity.
the next day I found myself cursing loudly seeing the smaller version of the handbook and having about 6 pages based on just moving.
I am currently trying to have a friend help me paint them, but that was put on hold sense I had to house sit for 2 and a half weeks, and when I was gone, the Daemons(aka my step brothers), decided to go into the kit, and play with them. So today when I am posting this, I had to dig around through there stuff, and so far found 1 of 2 of my missing tactical marines, one of my terminators, along with the Terminator sergeant, and the Space Marine Captain. None of the Orks were missing and I still need to find one of my tactical Marines.
Oh and one of the guys at the store kept on bugging me, saying I should have bought the Fantasy instead, and about after and hour, I felt like beating him with a haring.

EDITED FOR PERSONAL IDIOCY First, read that rulebook! as a fellow beginner, I cannot stress it enough! Painful as it is, I am finding the more rules I memorize, the easier and more fun it becomes for me. Don't let the guys at your shop bug ya..you play what you want, how you want. I'd advise making an army box, any cardboard box will do, and pad it with some form of foam. that way, the minis are protected to some minimum degree. Also keep it far far away from where the nephews can find them, or explain to them how expensive the hobby is and why they should not mess with the cool looking army dudes. what scheme did you decide on for your marines? I am curious to see which one whee That denny's story...whoo, I bet that'll be a moment to remember! It is good to see other people joining the hobby(I thought it dead), and counting the black reach set as a bridge into it!

I agree wholeheartedly with shin on this one! Don't do what I did..bought practically my whole army...THEN black reach..sigh.. Most shops are pretty good when it comes to help, I ask either Forums such as these, or other players. Helps if someone plays your army and is more experienced than you..kinda like a mentor. That being sad, my Tyranids are lonely. Marine players are in abundance, so you should be in luck. 3nodding Some friends I know got excited..until they learned how expensive the hobby is to assemble even a 1500 point force.. Also, it will take some time for you to find out what units you like or don't like/like. I would advise a battleforce, AFTER you have played for awhile WITH tanks. you can "proxy" a model, by using, say, a cleenex box, or any time of equivalent weight and size. In my opinion, proxying prevents you from buying a unit you will never use, and encourages learning rules you weren't able to due to mini limitations.

Death Sharpie DarkElf27 And you've got the whole forum here to draw experience from and to get tips. I agree with Shin, you should practice up and develop your own skills; you might end up better than you think. I thought you played Eldar, anyway? I was going to start out a Eldar army as my first army, but people kept on staring at me at the game store whenever I said it, so I am gonna get use to Space Marines first, then move on to Eldar >.> That's because they're trying to sell the new and shiny, instead of something more established that has a good standing codex and no real need for updates. xd That and Space Marines are a good starter army, just wish I knew last fall. xp

I see. Well Marines are fun so far....Oh and btw first battle happened today.
Myself as Space Marines: 9 tactical marines with sergeant armed with chainsaw sword 1 captain with power sword and boltgun 4 terminators with power fists and a terminator captain with power sword 1 dreadnaught with multi meta, close combat and storm bolter
Game store friend with Ork forces: 20 boys two of which were armed with big shootas 5 nobz 3 def koptas 1 Warboss with Power Kla
My space marines quickly moved into positions and what long range weapons they had were soon fired upon on the Orks off in the distance causing about two Orks to fall. The Orks Def Koptas soon then quickly came flying in shooting rockets taking down a tactical marine along with a Terminator, but fire from the Dreadnaught, along with Terminator storm Bolters and krak missles soon took them down.
Soon enough though the Orks soon came within range of the bolters and a quick exchange of bullets left several Orks dead along with two Marines, before the Mob of Orks along with the Warboss charged into the tactical marines, which the Captain soon enough joined the fray. Meanwhile the Terminators closed the distance while firing at the Nobz dealing damage and once enganed in melee, the Nobz were quickly destroyed by the superior Power Fist.
In a not so daring stand, the Captain and the tactical brothers soon fell before the Mob and the Warboss, not before taking several Orks with them. AS soon as the last of the Tactical Marines fell, the Dreadnought soon opened fire upon the Orks causing them to rush him, but not before the Terminators gave good shots into the Mob. In the melee combat that followed the Dreadnought destroyed the remainder of the Boyz, with the Terminators closing in dealing the Death blow to the Boss as it tried to desperately destroy the Dreadnought.
Space Marine survivors: 4 terminators, one being the Captain, along with the Dreadnought which amazingly went unscathed during the brutal close combat fighting.
Thoughts about this battle: I am going to have to buy new dice. I mean I only had the dice on me so now I feel like they are cursed, not sure why, I just do. I will let people used the cursed dice while I use my new pretty dice. Meanwhile I got pissed off at my flamer, because he did not get a single shot the whole battle. I wanted to have him make krispy Orks dammit!! Terminator Armor saves are god like. One of the pros there saw my Eldar farseer off to the side and wouldn't stop saying how pretty it was...... more or less thats what he was saying(Looks like someone is being praised, and its not me because I told them I did not paint it.) When one of the more experienced players look at the sheet given to me for Black Reach(mainly full of stats and charts for hitting and such) He said "Oh s**t" at the armour save the Orks have.
I need to play as Orks next time so I can see life through the eyes of Shin. whee Oh and today was really awesome for me in the Mail. I got the OOP Space MArine Captain, the Librarian and I had recieved the Chaplain in the mail yesterday. There was also something else in the mail of pure epicness, a broadway guide for the next upcoming year. Now why am I excited about it? Avenue Q is coming to my town. For refrence, watch The Internet is for Porn. Yes they sing it up on broadway. Will need to buy tickets for it blaugh
