Has anyone noticed that the general (not ALL) American Gaian population are horribly ignorant toward other countries/cultures either on purpose or by just assuming they're backward, or Japan is full of ninjas etc?
But transform into paranoid nutters when anything remotely mentioning the States from a non-American view is said?

Why yes I have.
It seems to me that in general, America is kept farily ignorant about the rest of the world. I mean, look at what their media. It's all America, America, America and not much else. Whereas our news programmes generally feature what's happening around the world, theirs only touch on global issues. Whereas our music and film charts are full of both british and american stuff, they don't tend to like things from other cultures as much. They get taught little if any history at school about anywhere other than America, and even the messy bits of that are somewhat glossed over. So at the end of the day, they see themselves through rose-tinted glasses and the rest of the world through a tiny frosted window.

Got you.
I know the schools are hugely different there, so you reckon that they're largely to blame for how people view, and what they actually know about other contires?

I'm lucky enough to know quite a few of the good ones, but in ED-P it's not unknown for an American Gaian to advocate 'nuking the rag-heads' or some such bizarre form of foreign policy.
I think it's probably something of an insular tradition. Socio-cultural backlash against the myth of the melting pot.

I don't think it's entirely down to schools. The whole culture is very inward-looking. An online American friend of mine said that she basically knew nothing about Britain, for example, before meeting lots of British people over the internet. Unless they have been thus enlightened, it seems that a lot of America hold on to the stereotype that we're somehow stuck in the 1920's, and all toddle around in top hats and tweed suits with bad teeth. (I'm not sure where they got the bad teeth idea from, but I gather it still runs fairly strongly). It seems the rest of the rest of the world is catagorised into a heap of stereotypes as well.

I think the same can be said of people from many countries. It's not as though Britain itself isn't full of exclusionary, narrow-minded and blind 'patriots'.
Having said that, I do think that educational system and media plays a heavy role in who people grow up to become: particularly with the educational system, you have an opportunity to shape people's opinions and though processes -- you have an opportunity to condition them -- which isn't available under other circumstances. It's beneficial to a government to have people be proud of their country -- and don't many people in America seem to feel that decrying their current government is unpatriotic? -- and especially to have them feel that their countrymen are superior. Patriotism is a big part of American culture; it always has been (and, to a point, that isn't a bad thing).
I get the feeling, though, that much of the reason Americans seem to look so bad is because there is such a high proportion of them on a site like Gaia, and that you're therefore more likely to see an American behaving in a way that we don't approve of than you are to see anyone of any other nationality doing so. It's not necessarily that these people exist in a higher proportion in America, but that their existance tends to be expressed to a greater degree on a website where they far outnumber people of different nationalities.

I think you know my opinion on this.
Our education is so focused on America and all the great accomplishments that we've made and fail to address all of our ******** UPs, which far outweigh our grand accomplishments. Our media is to controlled by the government to actually speak out against them and point out the several things that we've done wrong. Which is against the constitution, we're SUPPOSE to have an unbiased media, but that's far from true. The few reporters that do speak out and say something are generally unapproved by the masses of and don't get the air time that they should get, and most times dissapear. (Dissapear where?) I have no idea..
Minimal exposure to anything that isn't American isn't helping either. I seriously thought this was the best country in the world until quite recently. Other people after discovering the things that I have would continue being blinded and thing this is still the best country in the world.
In all honesty, I'm tired of saying that I don't like this country and I keep hearing IT'S BETTER THAN CUBA!11!!1oneoe!!
SO ******** WHAT?!?!? I think every country at this point is better than Cuba. Sure, we're not the WORST, but we NOT are BY FAR the best country in the world. We ******** every country we make a trade agreement with, we're fighting a war over in Iraq when we have people dying here stating that the reason is "the leader killed his people!11!1111oneone" OUR presidents kill people every day through negligence. How many people are dying because of the gang wars that we're putting minimal effort into stoping? How many people die because drugs that we're putting minimal effort into getting rid of?
I could seriously go on for days. The state of the country is PATHETIC. I want nothing to do with it anymore at this point. I'm done.

I object to America, and I also object to the anti-American sentiment. I tried to elaborate on this in a longer post but I couldn't explain myself and it made no sense at all.

's mental. rolleyes Actually. You're right. I'm an American, but without this ingnorance. (heh, so forward sweatdrop ) But you're right. There are so many of us that make stereotypes of other places that arn't even accurate. Like Japan with it's samuri. In my world studies class we're studying tolerance. Ulgh, the things some people do to others is just.. wrong and disgusting. stare

In my opinion, I think that most Americans are fine. It s just when there are large numbers that it all seems to go down hill. No offence to Americans is meant what so ever.
