Question: Is slim-fast bad for you?
I like to have a slimfast milk shake with a banana in the morning, but I eat regular meals later on. I like the drink, and before, it helped with my sweet cravings. I am wonder if I should start that again. I know I'm not following the plan, I just use it for the sweetness so I don't want sweets later on in the day.
So, what do you think?

i dont know whats in them so i couldnt say if they are nutritionally "good" for you, but as long as you are incorporating them into your diet with other meals and making healthy, lasting lifestyle changes rather than relying on them to lose the weight for you, i would say its fine

On their label it says "2% Milk must be used to meet your nutrient and minimum energy needs"
That just reeks of bullshit to me, so besides the fact that I wouldn't use their product because it had milk in it already, it's plainly lying and pushing a product that's not actually the best thing for you when you're trying to lose weight.
I'm not saying that anyone trying to lose weight shouldn't drink milk, I'm noting that it pisses me off that they say milk "must" be used, when to my knowledge (I don't have a milk label to compare) soy milk has less fat, and more nutrients. So ... wtf slimfast.
Edit: And I was reading the label to see what kind of chemicals they put in their food. I never got that far.

maybe because its so low fat you need the 2% fat from the milk, and soy milk wouldnt provide that? I dunno, im sure an absolutely 0 fat diet isnt good for you either, maybe thats why they say you have to have 2% milk with it. It could just be that they're covering their asses xD But yeah, it doesnt sound nutritious. But she's not using it exclusively it doesnt sound, just to control sugar cravings? So it could be ok for that purpose, since she's getting nutrients from elsewhere

Getting your fats intake from milk is probably the silliest thing I've *ever* heard.
That is true though about the low fat diet being bad. And covering their asses is probably also true, but I kind of think that it has more to do with A) supporting the milk industry, do you think they might collect a fee for pushing milk? and B) a continuous market.
By pushing milk (2% at that) in a drink that's supposed to be healthy and supposed to help you lose weight, they foster the idea that milk is healthy, which is reinforced by the ads we see on TV (at least in Canada) every twenty minutes or so during prime time.
People then think milk is acceptably healthy to drink. And drink they do, I know people that drink milk instead of water, and then Slimfast has a continual supply of fat people to market their product to.
Diet plans, diet people, diets, don't want to see the end of fat people. So even if slimfast helps some people lose weight, they're still pushing an ideal that leads to obesity.

whats wrong with getting your fat from milk? I mean, sure you should have a variety of sources most likely, but having one of them as some milk isnt a bad thing i dont think. Unless you're lactose intolerant XP Skim milk isnt too bad health wise, compared to a lot of fizzy drinks its going to be far more nutritious, as long as you have it in moderation. I wouldnt recommend having it instead of water xD But a bit a day isnt going to kill you (probably >.<)
I dont know if they collect a fee for pushing milk....there's nothing that suggests it but that doesnt mean its not true. We have slim fast here in new zealand so they'd have to be pushing milk internationally.
You're right diet companies dont want the end of fat people, but they also have to produce a product that works otherwise no one is going to buy it right? So what they really should be aiming for is a product which makes you lose weight when you use it, but gain weight as soon as you stop, thus creating their continuous market. And as we know, a lot of diet products have this effect. I doubt slim fast is any different.
However, here she isnt following the slim fast programme or using slim fast as her main method to weight loss, she's just using it to control her sugar cravings. So in terms of weight loss, i dont think its going to give her bad results as long as other changes are being made and slim fast isnt the core part of her plan. As long as she doesnt mind supporting a product that aims to keep people hooked that is wink

Bear in mind though that some powders with proteins cannot mix properly with anything but cow's milk. The enzymes in the milk help you digest the protein better.
So it may OR may not be the case that they're just pushing cow's milk, it could just be that their product won't be as effective without it. A lot of labels tell you to do stuff without saying WHY. sweatdrop
