TeaDidikai Okay... I know you Animists are out there... lurking, spying, giving me just cause to be paranoid! gonk She's onto us. Get your head down, she'll see you!!Quote: Anyway- I wanted to create a light topic on animism, naming conventions and our own personal things that have names. If folks want to discuss animism in the guild and their view of it's validity, or how it comes into one's practices- I refer you to the animism thread located here.Other than that- I'll start. My cars (I've had three) have been named Madrona, Tayrik and Haddie. They were two Ford Taurus Station Wagons and a 74 VW Super Beetle respectively. My computers have been Archibald and Leopold. My iPod Shuffle is Matcha- and yes, it's bright green. Most of my spiritual items do have names. Most of them would be pissed if I named them to folks they weren't introduced to. My car is named Lucille. Our previous car had already been named the Cricket by my grandmother, so we respected that name.
My ipods don't have names, but I certainly have a relationship with them. Even when I don't formally name something, it always has it's own identity.

Naming stuff always weirds me out. Because some things just are, and giving them a name seems meaningless, other things don't need to be given the familiarity of a name. I've tried naming things, but most of those are out of necessity. Like, my computer's named so it can be found easily on the network, but most things are named what they are. Like TomTom, Blue Pony, Not Aslan.
Names never really stick, either. Like, I could call my camera "Bob", but the name doesn't have any meaning for me, and if it did, I'd now be responsible for giving an object a name. Next, it'd start getting personality and desires, and I just don't want to be responsible for that.

My cello's name is Ophelia, which is the name of my second favorite female character from Shakespeare (my favorite being Viola, from Twelfth Night, but I figured that would give my poor cello identity issues!). My violin's name is Jeanique (I'm actually not sure how to spell it, the name just came to me, and I suck at French). Strangely enough, I've never been able to name my clarinet or my haegum, and I've had the clarinet for about 10 years now.
I named my car Cali, though my friends quickly changed it to the Purple Pride Mobile. Similarly, I named my laptop Chaucer (me and my friends have a thing for naming our computers after famous authors, for the inspiration), but it's become Willow after I changed my background to a picture of Willow from Buffy, who is pointing her magic at the computer's start button. Now she's starting to develop a personality, like the fact that she gets jealous and logs me out of IM or just freezes my entire computer as soon as my fiancee comes online. Sometimes I curse my friends for giving her that name, and myself for using that background, and now she's probably going to get mad at me for typing this...

I don't name much but: Teddies- Freddie Blue, Semmy, Porky, Bolt, Tigger, Hazel, Sleepy, Hugmy... Vehicles- Lilly the pink (I was actually named after this land rover blaugh ) Gloria the green Goddess, Max Steel (an old peurgout (sp?wth I can usually spell that!) that we made a shield for because dad was scared we'd crash it while we learned to drive), Charlie the Carlton, The Beast (A stripped down and shortened range rover with loads of mods, painted red, with a transparent bonet and lights in the engine), Isabelle, Fishguard Belle, Taff... I-pods- Douchesse (Shuffle 1st gen), Duke (Shuffle 2nd gen), Black Nessy (original): Only my shuffle 2nd generation is working but I keep Nessy and Douchesse because I'm a big softy. razz

My first car, an '84 Red renault 5 was called Bill but that's 'cause I inherited the car from other family members who had two cars at the time and one was Bill and the other Ben (Bill and Ben the flowerpot men was a well known kids TV show on the BBC) My second car was a '92 White Clio was my first Car that was bought outside of hand-me-down within the family and I called it SnowBó My third car was another Clio, a petrol Blue '99 Clio and that was just called Bó My current car.. yes, it's yet another Renault Clio, '02 Met Red and she's called MoBó, she's gettin' really old and cranky these day's with a few hip replacements and a pacemaker the wee thing has done over 160000 miles since I've had her!
My computer is called Pheonix, because it was risen from the ashes of Windoze Fista into WindozeXp and then into Ubuntu.
I don't have an I-pod, *wishes really hard for an iPhone or touch*, though my Old creative was often refered to as 'JunkBox', considering at the time most MP3Players had 512Mb and this thing had 20GB (which incidentally was more memory than my computer at the time), it ended up with so much music that I hadn't a clue what was on there... something for everyone for sure though.
MoBó had an argument with the JunkBox. JunkBox doesn't get used in MoBó any more. MoBó always wins the argument when she doesn't like people.
