just for of my best picture so far
PostPosted: Wed Mar 25, 2009 3:55 pm
ok im sorta new here but ill try and help u. tell me if im rong tho k?
lets get startedd:

for the first one i give u major props on the wings. i cant draw wings for crap.
for a critique i would say draw more detail in the eyes. wen i started working on my drawings more seriously last year, i remember one of my best critiques was to add more detail on the eyes cause it looks like a zombie lol. well unless u want that look, try adding more detail...look at ppls styles and see how they bring their eyes to life.
another thing is that the arm that is on the head of the dragon, it looks like it raps around the head almost, looking a bit awkward. i love how u did the other arm tho, u can see the muscle tone and everything. [which i fail att lol] so just make it so the arm looks more bent.
now for the dragon....the one with the hand on it looks great! the face looks relli nice and everything! only thing i have to say is that the spikes on the back look a bit flat...make them abit more detailed and it will look great! for the second head the eyes look a bit awkward. maybe turn it to the side like the other dragon head and it should make it look a bit better. if u want to keep the dragon head facing forward, first fix the neck so it gives it the right position preventing head to look like it was plastered on. second, look up some drawings and see the difference between dragon heads to the side and looking forward. from there draw some practice heads then fix it up wen ur ready
im srry i couldnt give u exact help on that but dragons arnt my specialty :]

next drawing is the girl,
i remember drawing an avi pic for myself and one critique i got was that it was impossible for someone to turn that far back unless ur relli flexible. i remember trying to stand and try to turn my head back [like my drawing which is the same pose as ur drawing] and realize he was right.
so i give u props on the arms again...mine look either like sticks or bloated sausages lol.
critique wise...first thing i noticed is that the butt looks like its attached to the thigh...add some definision so we can see where the thigh starts.
next is the hair looks a bit to big for the head...i had that problem too. just draw the outline of the head without hair before actually drawing the hair. ull c that it relli helps [well it did for me]
they eyes look pretty good! :] mayb a bit more detail but w.e. floats ur boatt :]

now for the next drawing,
the face expression is priceless...looks relli good :]
a bit more detail on the lips would be nice but its ur call there. next, the hand looks a bit puffy. if u make the fingers longer, and less palm, it would look better...trust me. i give u props on the hand though..at least u try. i just give up and find ways to hide them biggrin
last thing about the pic...the crotch area looks a bit big if u get wat im saying. u dont need that big of a line to get ur point out. a little v would workk [omg this sounds SOOOO wronggg lol]

last drawing...phewww lol,
some type of dragon thinger lol. i give u full authority to yell at me if im rong lol.
first thing i have to say is that the mouth looks kinda like a duck bill with teeth. idk if u want it like that but if u dont, just make the muscle [idk wat to call it] on the mouth bigger. next, the hands look a bit awkward. maybe add some detail so they dont look as flat and im sure it will look better :]

well, i hope i helped u and if i didnt...im srry

i never draw anything withought doing a basic frame first, if id free hand somthing you'd think i was writing in a alian language. and about fuu, it was fan art her hair is actually like that.

If you every come back (hehe I see it's been a while since your last post) try this.

User Image

It doesn't matter if the character is cartoony or realistic, drawing a simple skeleton can help you get a sense of the eb and flow of the pose and keep the body looking like a solid, yet fluid mass.

User Image

You can make any figure set up you want, and be sure things flow together before you start to work on the lines.

Also, it's fun to just make the little dummies without having to worry about making them into finished pictures. Give it a try.

majority of these were drawn months ago, but after my very first post here

@Errol McGillivray
I do use basic frames

It doesn't look like you do because your figures lack structure. Giving them structure is the basis of making poses believable as well as the anatomy believable.

I can't draw anything without guidlines

I guess even if you are using guidelines, it's good if they have the purpose of helping you move towards a certain accuracy of anatomy. eg Useful guidelines would be strategically bisecting/trisecting(is that a word?) a series of facial lines based on what proportions human faces tend to have in real life, rather than just intersecting them where you think eyes/mouth/nose etc should be. If you aren't sure where they should be to begin with... well, then guidelines you may use, but they won't be nearly as useful. And it's quite evident in the final product.

Um there are a lot of drawing anatomy online guides out there, I can't think of one off the top of my head but I'm sure Errol can refer you.

Other people are probably better at expressing this than me OTL. Hope this didn't come across as harsh.

haha yes trisect is a word xD

well maybe if you show us how you're doing your guide lines. and we can see where you're going wrong

You could be here a while i have multiple ways of drawing the same stance,
even sill I do limit myself to using one guideline at a time for a period of time until I switch.

How about you draw a quick one and don't erase your guidelines so we can see. Just start a figure. You don't have to make final lines or finish it. We're just trying to see how you generally start.

(It's not like we're asking for a dissertation on the history of underpaintings in 15th century Italy. You're making it harder on yourself than it has to be. I know it can be a bit nervous to show vulnerablity but unless you allow people to plainly see your faults, they can't help you.)

Nervous, I'm far from it. I wont ever be nervous about my work, art is my passion, a passion where I know my strengths and weakness as well as acknowledges them. But I'll do one of the most recent frame works i started using.

Hi hi

I think you should start off with practicing gesture drawings. Many of your works look stiff.

Practicing gesture drawings will help you loosen up as well as help you gauge in an idea of proportion. You can practice by looking at pictures or (I prefer) hanging around in the mall or anywhere that has a lot of people and just randomly start scribbling. You can scribble out a pose before the person moves or with a picture 5min 60sec - 2min. Use a marker or pen no pencils allowed. Also try avoiding to lift your pen. (^^)

Gesture drawing is fun when you get the hang of it. It isn't something that will turn out pretty it's to help you map out the flow of movement or pose...more like a warm-up. (^^)

Here is an example:

This one is a correction to your frame work. My correction isn't perfect but it points out some mistakes...sorry I'm not good at explaining, just look at the pic and compare.

I think most of what I'd say has already been said before, but I think you need to keep working on more gestural drawing. See if you can't get a friend to pose for you or draw people sitting down or walking by.

From what I'm seeing of your work, you ARE putting effort into things, but I think your efforts might be in the wrong places. You're adding lots of details before you get the overall form or shape down. For example, on the anatomy drawings you've posted, you painstakingly drew in lots of the muscles and the like. But you missed out on the real basic message of simply trying to draw correct proportions, and to get a gist of the "volume" of things.

One thing that may help you is to try to break the image down into simpler shapes. Practice drawing things like spheres, cylinders, cones, pyramids, etc... focus on how you can get them to jump out at you/look "3D". Think awhile on how you can represent a 3D object on a 2D piece of paper. Probably you'll have to add shading to get this to work. Maybe study up on perspective, too.

When you're done with all of that, then see if you can't break a human body into those different shapes. If you want to challenge yourself, try drawing a complete human skeleton.

Other tips that may help you... try to draw what's actually there and not just what your brain thinks you're seeing. Your brain will tell you something is a certain color. Is it really? Isn't it actually made up of a range of colors? It'll also tell you that body parts need to be drawn a certain way. But do they really have that shape? Look closely with "unjaded" eyes. XD

Ok, feel free to ignore any of the advice I've offered. I'm just trying to offer suggestions and am no expert. wink Good luck!
