So, last night I had a dream, involving magic, where someone told me that I couldn't possibly understand the forces I was dealing with.
Which got me thinking, every time someone brings up things like the occult, magic, Ouija boards, or sometimes meditation, there's always someone who's screaming about demons and crazy things that happen to unsuspecting people because they were messing with the wrong things. Sometimes it's to scare people out of it, sometimes it's from "experienced" people shaking their heads at the "n00bs" who they think are going to end up possessed.
So, when exactly do you know what you're messing with? Have you ever had any issues where you really didn't know what you were dealing with? And have you ever tried to scare someone out of doing something, because you thought that they were dealing with forces beyond their control?

AniMajor So, when exactly do you know what you're messing with?
Enter Tea's standard post number 5B: Depends on the Tradition, Depends on the Being, Depends on the Practitioner.
Some traditions have their beings, prescribed methods for work and the expectations of the quality of individuals called to the tradition nailed down pat. Wica and OTO come to mind.
Some traditions are more vague. Lore indicates a diverse personality spectrum for a given individual or group that has more variables than a bound nature present in some traditions Deities and Otherlings.
Sometimes you can't fix stupid. No matter how iron tight the system is, how clear the other two factors are- the individual seeking to practice isn't competent.
Quote: Have you ever had any issues where you really didn't know what you were dealing with? Once or twice. Mostly because I was cut off from family members who were supposed to help me.
Quote: And have you ever tried to scare someone out of doing something, because you thought that they were dealing with forces beyond their control? Yep. Though it's more of a warning than an attempt at psychologically screwing them. Less "Ooooo! The Mean ol' Demon will eat you!" and more of "You're an idiot. You're going to make a mess. This is how the mess will play out. I don't want to clean it up- so knock it off."

mute_coyote TeaDidikai AniMajor Obviously there's some question as to whether the person can actually do it, given their skill level, because if someone says they're going to raise the dead, it's most likely not going to happen. Less concerned with that kind of stuff. More concerned with what they could do if they over reached. Could you specify what you mean by "over reached"? The Spiritual equivalent of Jack a**.
Within the realm of what is possible, but not in the realm of what they can control.
