I've discovered that America does not know what conkers are.
Most Gaians are American and were just blank when I asked if they have horse chestnut trees.
To think most of the western world doesn't play with conkers as kids...horrifying...
gonk

gonk Bloody hell, but that was so key to school life. All the close-packed circles of kids playing conkers in the playground. The machismo of the massive ones, the particularly British victory of the tiny conker and the nerd over the leviathan twenty-niner wielded by the rugby captain..
..all the hopes and dreams, the hopes and silent prayes for your conker to withstand the bludgeonings of chance. For secret methods of baking, pickling, varnishing or otherwise treating your conker, methods passed from father to son, for them to be tested and found worthy. Hopes crushed, arrogance damned and the victory of the underdog. Ohyes. Oh. yes.
What can they have that matches conkers for a school activity!?

*Ahem* I said played, not play! As in past tense.... In other words, I used to play them, I don't still play them. Besides, I can't find mine anyway. Ignorant American...

biggrin I think that the fact that you played with pogs at all is sad. sad ~patpat~ I'm glad you grew out of that. I never played it myself, it looked quite silly even when I was a child.

We win.
We had these ghastly plastic fads of pogs and yo-yo's.
But the conker remains, and shall ever remain supreme on the playground.
