Gothdom is very 'in' these days, at least according to fashion designers.

The fall catwalks were full of supposedly 'gothy' looks... though as one might imagine, they weren't always what the subculture itself would think of as gothy. More like a pastiche of goth, punk and emo with some flat out fashion victim thrown in. But some of the looks were appealing (at least to me). I'm pretty stoked about the use of black lace.

In fact, the trend is so big that British Harper's Bazaar dedicated an entire issue to black clothing.

But how does the GGG feel about Goth becoming mainstream for a season and big-name brands trying to cash in? Is it a bad thing that this winter, the well-heeled will be joining the ranks of wannabe goths? Is it a step toward acceptance or a sign that the movement has well and truly jumped the shark?

Personally I think it's a good thing... if only because when the high street boutiques start copying designer looks, we'll be able to buy gothy clothes without the goth shop prices.

I'm going to take refuge in that I know absolutely no one in real-life (besides myself) who likes to wear 80s tradgoth fashion.

i'd be interested to see what your talking about but for the most part the term goth has long since been reduced to meaningless by the mainstream.

It's only this season and likely to only last that long.
I'll find a few pictures for people if they want.
A lot of it is punk as well but most of the time it's separated quite well when it comes to the cat walk.

Here are my top tips for chanelling your inner Morticia Addams. Just read more

* Remember this is gothic with lashings of glamour. Team your smouldering makeup with off-the-shoulder ruffles, sheer layers of chiffon or this season's hot lace trend.
* Keep it pretty. Try a palette of lilac and grey, instead of too much black, if you want a softer smoky effect.
* On the catwalks at Zac Posen and Vivienne Westwood, dramatic smoky eyes were pared with dark, red-black lips. For real life try either/or. A dark mouth with pale grey smoky eyes looks cool.
* Alternatively, experiment with dark meets pale. Try dark, winged punk-goth eyes, with pale lips, as at Lanvin (pictured). Keep blush minimal too.
* Dark metallic nails are an easy way to work the trend. Or go all out and paint your talons jet black with Butter London Union Jack Black, (£10).
* This is a sexy, provocative look, so go for cat-like, winged eyeliner or vinyl-esque glossy lips to keep it looking femme fatale fabulous.

This may be wrong for what you think is goth but it's just what I found. i don't think it will last long as far as trends go.

I don't think it will last long as far as trends go.

Trends never do. The fashion industry wouldn't make nearly so much money if they didn't convince bored, rich women that they have to completely change their looks every season.

But at least for autumn/winter there'll be nifty black stuff.

I think it's a temoprary fashion statment. It won't last, also just because they happen to be wearing all black by no means says they are goth. I don't thin anyone will accept us any better just becuase of this as they don't now for reasons beyond our clothes. The goth image hasn't been set very well to the mainstream public.

odds are some of the people who dress the part will start to wonder about the music, some of them will find out the truth, and some of them will like it.

I can't afford anything, and wannabes make me unhappy..... but whatever, at least there might be some new gothy faces around the mall.

I think this can be both a good and a bad thing. It can be good because more people will accept our way of life. We won't be stared at like we're monster-like freaks. It can also be bad because there will be more posers who don't really understand goth, that could kill the subculture if we don't educate the posers on what goth really is.

Just because some fashion moguls in France and Italy decide that the world must wear black stuff and crosses for winter? neutral

Maybe more bands that dress like goths, but I doubt there'd be more goth bands.
