No, he didn't use the death note... He planned to, though, indirectly.
And he did lay hands on one, so it's not completely unrealistic. If they had him writing in it, that might be kind of annoying...

And in the movie, doesn't L commit suicide with the death note?

It is kinda annoying. I think they should carry a giant lolipop. That would be best. Or a big chocolate bar but then it would be too much like Mello.

L has never used the Death Note, so seeing people cosplaying with it annoys me. But I suppose they have a reason for a doing it. My guess would be that he died in the process of testing the Death Note and that's why it's with him. Sounds weird, doesn't it?
I don't see why they can't cosplay him with other various things. Like his cellphone, or the extremely long handcuffs? Cake would just be a hazard to hold...

i get it, that is really stupid, if they're going to cosplay as L then they should hold a small piece of cake or something sweet... either they're ignorant, or just plain stupid
