It's called a career in the media. If you're not going to be funny to anyone, you're going to have to look good, and if the agency you're employed by thinks you're ugly as dog's balls, they're gonna want to mess with your face.
Comedians can at least incorporate their ugliness into their act - singers, actors and models cannot.
Now, to relate this to the media's consumer, teens - they don't really care or notice. I bet they know for a fact that they'll never get with their favourite singer, so long as they look hot, they don't care. And the whole of Asia is America's little b***h when it comes to influence - nobody can be blamed here.
Or maybe people have got time to notice how ugly they seem to themselves, and enough money lying around to fix it, so it's done just for the sake of it.
Show me several Asians who are not singers, actors or models who have plastic surgery done to their face, and that will nullify my argument.
tl;dr - consumers don't care, companies exploit lack of care
